We usually drive to the Roswell location, but the wait is always outrageous so we decided to visit this location today. It's located in a plaza with some other businesses so it's easy to pass it. They have a huge parking lot so no issues with finding a space. Upon entering we were instantly greeted by a smiling face and sat within 1 minute of walking-in. The seating is a bit more intimate but I like it. They had great music playing in the background and it wasn't too noisy so you can still talk. As for food, I ordered the fish and grits with a side of French toast and Ryan ordered the Chicken sandwich with a side of French toast. The food is always delicious but I'm more stuck on the sweet tea. It just tastes like someone's grandmother made it with love. Thumbs Up Diner has been around for a while here in the metro area and with the opening of this location in Austell, they are up to, I believe 6 spots for you to get your belly full of all things breakfast and lunch! This particular Thumbs Up is located on East West Connector has been open for about 1.5 years at this point. They sit in a small shopping center and occupy the corner spot. The center itself is right on EW Connector and sits between a car wash and a fairly new Dunkin' Donuts. The center also features a medical office for reference. Given their location in a plaza, parking is ample. You may not get right in front of the door, but you got plenty of spaces to pull into before getting your grub on! Before I dive into the specifics, this review is a combination of my two visits, both for breakfast. My first visit was during full blown pandemic season and I will say that they handled it very well with social distancing, masking up, cleanliness, etc...I came on a weekday morning, so naturally the crowd was limited but again even with the crowd there they did well. My latest visit was on a Saturday morning in June, so social distancing is no longer a thing, however they kept the dividers up between the booths and still recommended face masks. Additionally, majority of the staff were wearing masks and a high number of the customers at least entered with them on. Service on both occasions was similar, no matter how busy they are and to be honest, it was "meh" service both times. I will say that my first waitress was apologetic for a few misses, which was all good, however our latest visit's service and server left quite a bit to be desired. In addition to her irritated attitude, we ran out of drinks mid way through the meal and they never got refilled, we ordered cheese grits, and instead of of getting them we got regular grits with a side of attitude when we brought it to her attention and then I asked for a sweet tea at the beginning of our meal and it never came...Another layer of the service from my most recent visit was the use of the Waitlist via Yelp. We were about 15 minutes out when the wait stated it was 20 minutes, so we put our names on the list. Our table happened to be ready earlier, but we were directed to check in by 11:34 AM to be sat, and actually arrived at 11:30 AM to check in only to be told our table had just been given away, so we had to wait a few moments. Basically, the waitlist did not do anything for us. Maybe they are new to the program, so hopefully they can work it out to ensure customers can get the best use out of a really cool feature that is offered, especially on those busy weekend days. Food wise on both trips here I got a variety of the breakfast sandwich, both as sausage, egg and cheese and sided with cheese grits. I will say that the sourdough was my favorite type, the other I got was the bagel. The sourdough was a great vessel for the egg, cheese and sausage, remained toasty and crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Additionally, they put two pieces of meat, so the distribution of the goods made it easy to get a little bit of everything in each bite. The bagel wasn't bad and had a solid texture. They heated the bagel up and while it was firm, it wasn't too hard and was easy to bite through without pushing all the food out the sides. One difference is there is only one piece of sausage on the bagel sandwich and it is not the same circumference of the bagel, so when you get to the outer part of the sandwich you are getting nothing but egg and bagel. As an extra they include a small container of their homemade jam. My first visit was grape and my most recent was peach. Both were tasty! Side wise, I have to branch out on my next visit as I got cheese grits on both occasions and on neither visit was I happy I made that choice. The grits were hardy and good in service size, but they were bland and did not taste like much. Even after adding the cheese, salt, pepper and a little more butter...still not a whole lot going on. They aren't bad, but they aren't good either. They are somewhere in the middle. I do think next time I will choose the potatoes to see what is up there. Overall, Thumbs Up is a solid place for breakfast and while my experiences have not been over the top and there have been a few misses on both visits, nothing was crazy enough to keep me away. I will have to shift my expectations and choices upon future visits, but I will certainly be back. read more

I've always wanted to try the Thumbs Up dinner near the house and never had the chance to before today. I ordered brunch via Grub Hub delivery. I ordered an Omelet, Whole-Wheat toast, Grits, and a side of Vegetarian Sausage. Everything was good and delicious and still warm when delivered. The Vegetarian Sausage has the consistency of real meat and has someone of a spicy flavor, but it is very good and goes well with the grits. Their grits are creamy and thick--the way they should be. The omelet was great with generous helps of ham, cheese, green peppers, and onions. The toast was good as well. I recommend them for a quick, delicious, and heart brunch delight. read more

The only reason this place got the 2 stars out of me is because the service was great and they offered a discount. The food though *clears throat* looked liked scraps from the trashcan. I ordered fish and grits and my wife ordered chicken and waffles. My fish was over cooked and chewy and felt like I was chewing on a balloon. My wife on the other hand had it worse than me. Her first order of chicken was way OVERCOOKED. It looked like they pulled the fried scraps from the bottom of the oil fryer and set it neatly on the plate. It was like they cooked it one time, then put in back in the oil to cook it again. They remade it, and brought back fresh chicken strips. The icing on the cake was this waffle. Yall, she tried to cut the waffle and the top part and the bottom half separated. (See pic below). Now whats crazy is, when they brought the fresh chicken out, the manager saw the waffle separated like this and looked us in the eyes and smiled. After that I knew they would never get another penny from me. Even if was dying and needed one breakfast item to live forever, gone head and count me out. Came on a Sunday so I expected the wait to be long. They told us one hour so we waited it out. After we got to an hour we went to check on the status and they told us another 45 minutes. I believe the reasoning behind having to wait so long is bc this location is not well suited to handle a big rush. The dining area is small and the kitchen is so slow with getting food out. Seriously it's breakfast food and a very small limited lunch menu of salads and sandwiches. How hard is it to cook that! As for the food, it is decent. I tried multiple foods and I would really only give a thumbs up to the French toast. Everything else needs to be loaded with condiments/sauces (which they charge extra for)! DO NOT GET THE GRITS! Literally the worst grits I've ever had. So bland and they came out cold. Not even my one year old would eat them and she likes everything! I wish I would have ordered bacon for my choice of meat bc the sausage patties were burnt and so hard, I felt like I was eating beef jerky. This was the worst experience ever. I was once a regular and the food was always amazing. Today, I decided to dine and get my favorite, pork chops and spuds. The spuds were precooked and hard. My omelet was mediocre, nothing above and beyond. You get 3 eggs and a cheese and then pay for additional toppings. I chose my cheese and they didn't add it which, I think Led to it lacking in flavor. My husband was happy with his. He loved the French toast and the serving of hash was HUGE!! He brought my biscuit home to try later. Service was decent. I was a little turned off because I saw a guy bringing out food and his mask was not covering his mouth or nose, just his goatee. Luckily, he didn't bring out our food. Time for the food to come out was pretty long. There were only 2 other tables dining in and we waited close to 30 minutes for our food to come out. I had a doctor's appointment scheduled around my lunch break and opted to eat at a nearby eatery, Thumps UP. The waitress noticed my scrubs and inquired whether I had worked a long shift, presuming I was in the medical profession. I immediately informed her that I do not work in healthcare but instead in a child care facility. It had been a busy day; I had worked with eight lively one-year-olds. She then mentioned how difficult that could be and took my order. While I was enjoying lunch, the waitress returned and informed me that an anonymous diner had generously covered the cost of my entire meal. Apparently, this kind-hearted patron had overheard our conversation and wanted to express their appreciation for the tireless effort and patience required to wrangle a classroom of toddlers all day. I couldn't but feel a renewed sense of gratitude for having the opportunity to positively impact the lives of young children every single day. The waitress's empathy and the customer's thoughtful gesture provided a welcomed boost of encouragement to power through the remainder of my workday.And as always, the FOOD IS GREAT!! read more

I wanted to give this place several visits before I reviewed it - and after five visits - I think I'm ready. The few times we've tried to visit as a 'family' on Sat or Sun - have been too crowded, so I've only had the food as take-out. The Good The owner, based on her responses both here on Yelp and nextdoor and other social media forums, seems conscientious, able-to-graciously accept feedback and sweet. The staff is energetic and friendly. The place is clean and the prices are affordable. The Bad The food doesn't seem to be consistent and they sometime struggle with order accuracy. For instance, on my first order, I asked that they omit from my chicken tacos, but they forgot. The next time I ordered, I went with a burger and asked if they could use grilled toast instead of a bun and they forgot. FYI - the burger was cooked medium (I love that they ask how you want it cooked) and it was a pretty tasty burger even without the toast! With regards to consistency - the first time I had the lemon chicken soup it was phenomenal - broth based with a very heavy lemon flavor. Today - it was very thick - almost the consistency of grits - with LOTS of onion, no actual chicken chunks and no discernible lemon flavor. (I would actually have thought that they gave me the wrong soup, but I distinctly remember the server telling me lemon chicken was the only soup available.) And this time, the patty on my burger was cooked well-done, instead of medium - and so salty that I couldn't finish it. I'm sure that are probably still fine-tuning and tweaking recipes and protocols - and that as time goes on, these types of issues will go away. The Ugly There is nothing ugly about this place! My manager strikes again! She was on Facebook and said, OH! They are opening up a Thumbs Up Diner on East West. I had completely forgot I had been to one before about 5 years ago and even wrote a review. It was good. They were doing a soft opening today. The Facebook initially said 10 to 3, but they changed it to 2, so I had to rush down Powder Springs to get there. Thankfully my manager was wise enough to tell me to call in. Had the pleasure of adding this place as I was waiting on my food. I was a little surprised it was not ready when I got there 20 minutes after I had called it in, and I had to wait 20 minutes after I had already paid to get it, but it was a soft opening so I know they were probably training the new employees, which is fine by me! Get it right, because if this place becomes anything like the other Thumb Up Diners they are going to start having lines out the door, which honestly is not going to be a good thing because the parking lot is not exactly ideal. The server was really nice when I walked in. I met their HR rep. who was helping with the open. I even told them I was putting them on Yelp; promote local right! For a soft opening the food was good. Not as great as the other Thumbs Up Diner I went to over on Marietta St. in ATL, but still good. I am sure that give it a little time and they will be on the same level as all the other locations. I love it when people expand to Cobb, saves me the trouble of having to go to ATL and the awful traffic just to get something really good to eat. It was half off for the soft opening, so with that being said I paid about $14 for 3 eggs, 2 pieces of sausage, some grits, and a belgian waffle. Not bad in my opinion. I am excited to see more food options popping up in the Austell-Powder Springs area. They have a nice menu. It has enough options to not be boring but also not so many where you feel overwhelmed. I've been to a few other locations around Atlanta and the quality seems to be on par with my previous experiences. You have to try the fried fish filet. I have had it twice since the openning!! This spot is off the chain!! If you're looking for a good breakfast place in the area then Thumbs Up Diner is the spot for you. Although the ambience is relaxing and wide open, it could use a couple decorations to seal the deal. I must say though that the food more then makes up for this minor priority. The plating was professional and appetizing to the eye. The portions were huge and I had no arguments there; most people will probably be taking home leftovers. We have been waIting for this restaurant since we knew it Was going to open. Sometimes those expectations can mean we end up disappointed. That was not the case. This place lived up to and exceeded our expectations. We came in around 9:30 am. They were busy but we were seated right away. The service was incredible some of the best we have evver had. My husband said maybe the best service he has ever had. The food was delicious. The portions are enormous. I could not believe the prices. They were so reasonable for the quality and quantity of food. Also this place has so many vegetarian options. That is so needed in this area. We will definitely be back.
