Reminders for annual and semi-annual visits are consistent and sent more than once but not over-whelmingly. The sign of a cohesive and caring pet care center is its staff and turnover or lack thereof. One vet tech has been at Highlands for over 15 years the other for, I think, almost 5 years; the manager also has been associated with the clinic for at least 14 years; and Dr. Venghaus has been with the clinic well over 10 years. I will take my pets to no other vet than Dr. V. He diagnosed my late pup with a rare autoimmune disease that her previous vet missed. He told me clearly, because I like it that way, when she was in pain beyond medication and it was time to put her down for her sake. He puts the pet first, and I adore him for that. I've been home-bound and the clinic without a wheelchair ramp, so Dr. V and the staff had to put my oldest gal down during the pandemic; it broke my heart. Dr. V called me later that day, staff called me the next. You can search, but once you've established a relationship, I doubt you'll find better care

I took my kitty Leonard for a regular checkup and he had a bump on his side. The vet was so reassuring and calm. She gave me several options and was very upfront with the costs and not pushy at all. After an in house biopsy we settled on removal a couple months later and were able to add dental cleaning at the same time to save some money and allow for Leonard only needing to be put under once. He got his stitches out today and I was again impressed with the level of care. Leonard says thank you!

My cat was recently diagnosed (at a different vet) with a somewhat rare parasite (Tritrichomonas),…read moreand I was having a hard time finding a vet I felt confident in. My usual vet, who we have been seeing since adopting the cat almost 2 years ago, rudely dismissed my concerns over the phone and insisted that I needed to pay an $80 office visit fee just to get an answer to my question over the phone (the question was "What does the PCR panel test for?"). I started calling every other vet in Austin to find a clinic that has experience with Tritrichomonas and that I felt comfortable with. Several clinics admitted that they did not know what the parasite was or had never treated it before. Another lied and said "oh, that is super easy to treat and really common and straightforward!" which I knew was not accurate from the empirical literature online. I finally found Austin Urban Vet and the experience we have had so far has genuinely been night and day different from pervious clinics. From the very first call, the AUV team was empathetic to our situation, VERY transparent about pricing (they provided it in writing), and explicitly clear about which PCR diagnostic panel they use at AUV and exactly what it tests for. They were open and honest about their experience with Tritrichomonas and I immediately felt at ease and confident in the care that they could provide my cat. After chatting with my partner about my findings from calling almost every vet in Austin, we both agreed Austin Urban Vet was the best one to move forward with, so we made an appointment. Right off the bat, I was happy to find that AUV has a private parking lot (for free!). I headed inside with my cat and the team at the front desk was so kind and helpful. They quickly checked me in and invited me to grab a bottle of water or make myself a cup of coffee as I waited for the tech to take us into the room. We waited for maybe ~5 minutes before the tech took us to the exam room, where she scanned my cat for her microchip, weighed her, and asked questions about the presenting problem, history, etc. Dr. Helen was who attended us for the exam itself, and she was so kind and thorough. I really felt that she was providing genuine feedback, and she was honest about her experience with this parasite. She was transparent about the treatment plan and let me know her general thoughts (Ie., "If she is still positive, we will do X. If she is negative, we can try Y.") We are now waiting for the PCR results, but so far, I am so happy with our experience and feel confident that Dr. Helen will provide us with the best care possible.

My dog has passed away recently from a heart attack at 3 years old due to chagas which was spread from kissing bugs. I wish that vets in Austin would warn dog owners about chagas disease and that there needs to be an antibody test done yearly with Texas A&M, so they could be saved. After Dr. Gilbertson was gone, we had visited other vets but most of them have lead to us vet techs who had given my puppy his cytopoint shots. (He was scratching due to chagas eating him away from the inside, but the vets have decided that it must be allergies and that we should just give him cytopoint or apoquel so he would not scratch himself). I am deeply saddened by the cursory health care that was given to him and that he has struggled his whole life due to medical incompetence.

My female cat has started experiencing kidney/urinary issues over the past year. A couple of weeks…read moreago, I took her in for updated bloodwork since her previous vet (who has since left Paz) wanted to monitor a specific marker. The appointment cost around $200-$250. During this appointment I wasn't seen by a doctor, just the tech, but was assured a doctor would review her bloodwork and contact me. They emailed me to say that "everything was within normal range." However, since I specifically wanted to see the results for this particular marker, I requested a copy of the bloodwork. To my surprise, when I reviewed the results, multiple markers were clearly concerning, even to my untrained eye. When I asked questions about these findings, they told me I'd need to schedule another follow-up appointment (with an additional visit fee) and bring her back in just to discuss the results. Why would I stress my cat out with another car ride/vet visit just to get answers about my previous appointment? This makes no sense. On top of that, it took them about a week to even call me back. During this time, I hired an online vet to review the bloodwork. To my shock, this vet confirmed that the results show early signs of kidney disease--the leading cause of death in cats--and stressed the importance of starting preventative measures immediately. In short, I can no longer recommend this clinic. All the good vets have left, and the quality of care provided could cause major health concerns to go missed. Please find a better option! This clinic claims to be holistic and to have a natural approach, but that couldn't be further from the truth. I want to share my experience at this veterinary clinic so other pet owners know what to expect…read more When we brought our dog in -- already muzzled for everyone's safety -- the staff administered a rabies shot, which I understand is required by law. However, this was done before completing a full examination. Only after giving the shot did they tell me they believed my dog's condition was severe enough that euthanasia might be necessary. As someone who also runs a business, I found the lack of empathy and customer service very disappointing. Charging for a rabies shot and then immediately recommending euthanasia felt like extremely poor judgment and bad practice. During an already emotional situation, I expected more compassion. What added to my frustration was the follow-up. When I called to ask about the $35 charge, the front desk told me they would speak with one of the doctors. After doing so, they informed me that the doctor said the $35 charge would stand, despite the circumstances. The entire experience felt like money vs empathy. I expected a thorough diagnosis first and a more considerate approach all around. I truly hope the clinic reevaluates how it handles cases like this so other pet owners don't leave feeling the way I did. Needless to say we will not be using this clinic for our pets last moments as our total bill was $965.78 and the 35.00 is mandatory.

I have had many appointments and spent thousands of dollars overall, as Rafferty is the most expensive vet that I have ever had. Additionally, he has turned me away on a couple of occasions, because he stated that, "honestly, I do not know how to do that". One was stitching my females stomach to her abdomen, to avoid her stomach turning, during spay surgery. While he is a nice enough person, he is not a very bright vet. I would have done better to have googled everything, and ordered my own meds, and injected the dogs myself. Dont waste your money with these hacks, and rude people. It is simply not worth it.

It can be difficult to get an appointment because they are always booked out. I think this is also a good indicator of how popular they are and how other pet owners like them as well. One thing that can be frustrating is that they gate keep their prescriptions. They really REALLY want you to buy your pets prescriptions from them, so they make it difficult to buy it from other locations like Chewy.com. You have to pay extra money to have the prescription sent to you and then you have to snail mail the prescription to chewy which is a pain. It's annoying because usually chewy does have better prices. Despite this, I still really like this vet and will keep going. You might not read my long, emotional, personal story but it could become your story. Free speech includes opinions and reviews. No one should be punished for speaking out unless they are lying and why would I lie? This WONDERFUL vet clinic turned into a blackmail machine. MANY months ago I went in with my dog Karma (not knowing that Dr. Meyers was gone). Karma had horrible ear infections (again) and her "downstairs" was like bloody leather (AGAIN). I asked over and over to stop sending me home with my girl's ears full of medical "ear goop" and a lipstick-sized tube of "doggie neosporin." I then took her to Brykerwood's only to find that bacteria had eaten her eardrums and she would never hear again. Her entire body was infected with bacteria and she needed a medicated shampoo daily. As I shaved her I was disgusted with the white balls of strange bacteria attached to her skin and hair falling to the concrete. A week later she was like a puppy again. There is a reason I am updating and re-telling my story: I have a Great Dane that I took in for pre-op bloodwork necessary to put him under for surgery. His "visit" and flea/HW meds cost over $330. (They reimbursed me for $45 of that amount) About 9 days ago he (Odin) had a serious episode. I called Riverside Vet in desperation because bloat is deadly and he had all of the symptoms. Odin couldn't sit or lay down. His stomach was bigger than normal. His nose was dry and warm. Thomas answered. I begged them to see Odin. Thomas said they would call me right back to see when they could get him in. Thomas/they never did call me back. I had to turn to a emergency clinic. In a cosmic coincidence while tearfully waiting for that call I went to get the mail. There was a large vanilla envelope from Riverside Vet with a cover letter saying that "care was based on trust." And then, in very long and rambling paragraphs it said that I gave them a bad review in the past on Yelp and... "we have canceled all of your upcoming appts" (including Odin's surgery that I had to plan for 6 weeks in advance) and promising to reimburse me for Odin's bloodwork. All and all getting Odin seen at an emergency clinic cost me over $650 + $598 the very next day for a "follow-up" because I no longer had a vet. At least Odin is still alive. Karma is not.

She recommended the shot which I planned for but she also said I should use a "mousse" on her feet to help them heal from the biting. I asked the tech if it will make her sick since she constantly licks them, and the tech said there would be no problem. I applied the mousse when we got home. But that night Mia threw up her dinner and then threw up her breakfast the next morning. I called Cornerstone and had to wait for an available vet to respond to the tech who called me back a few hours later. The vet said "she should have worn a cone". Well - duh? Why didn't they tell me that when they gave me the mousse? Which cost $36 - down the drain. Last week I had another allergie visit and that went badly as well. Mia has an issue with her neck from a long ago injury and will scream if you touch it a certain way. I don't even have a collar on her so nobody accidentally pulls on it. I told the tech this fact as I handed Mia to her and the tech (I don't know her name but she's tall with dark hair) said "yes it's in her charts". She proceeded to slip a leash around her neck, set Mia down on the floor and began to pull her into the room for the shot as Mia was reluctant to go with her. Seriously??? Why didn't she just carry her? She's 13 pounds. Tech was cold and uncaring from my perspective - no explanation. When she brought her back out she barely said a word to me...no smiles...no report on how it went....not good customer service.
