The marker reads, "The Neabsco Mills Ironworks complex, under the ownership of three generations of the Tayloe family, of Richmond County, operated between 1737 and 1828. Located near this site, it was one of the longest continuously operating ironworks in present-day Northern Virginia. The 5,000-acre iron plantation, which was worked by resident free laborers, indentured servants, and slaves, was a multifaceted operation. The workers produced not only pig and bar iron for sale at home and export to Great Britain, but also engaged in shipbuilding, milling, leatherworking, shoemaking, and farming. The complex was an important supplier of iron for weaponry during the American Revolution and the War of 1812." Located in a subdivision, park on the street and follow the path to the ruins. There are three places with ruins- the foundation of the 18th century house, what's left of old Greek Revival columns, and two small wooden structures. All except the columns are fenced off. Several signs are scattered throughout the space, but half are almost impossible to read due to wear and tear. It's worth noting that even though the land was used as a plantation whose owner enslaved people, there is no mention of that and how evil that was. It's a huge miss since acknowledgement and condemnation is one small step toward creating a more equitable society for all.

Now that's out the way, wow, I can't believe that I have lived in gorgeous PG my entire life and never knew about this area, let alone the community center. It is off of Pennsylvania Ave., and if you go over the bridge toward the courthouse you have gone too far! There is a small windy road that leads to the center. There are tennis courts a large field, and of course the community center. It is a nice size, with a small gym pool table, etc.. The staff were friendly and helpful. WOODSON MEMORIAL & PARK, as to not confuse it with the high school, historic preservation site (home), recreation center and other places named after the legend. Yelp, please change this! I've been trying to get here for a while now. I finally got here! This park is built near his home (1538 9th Street, NW) and the historic Phyllis Wheatley YWCA (901 Rhode Island Ave, NW) in the Shaw neighborhood. It's a small, triangular park that is bordered by 9th Street, Q Street and Rhode Island Avenue. There are at least 3 park benches on this site and a bit of shade and reprieve from the busy streets bordering the park. On the well traveled streets of Rhode Island or 9th, it's easy to miss in passing or alternatively, a great reminder of the significance of the area. I love that it's a part of his neighborhood as opposed to being tucked away amongst other memorials or monuments that are mainly accessible by foot and usually crowded by tourists. I want tourists to see this too, but its location here is a great tribute and a perfect was to honor the preservation of the neighborhood. DC is changing so much, that I hardly know where my childhood is anymore. To see this was heartwarming and actually brought a tear to my eye. Such grand American history, right here in my home town. It's on display for everyone to enjoy and recognize in the neighborhood and not tucked away in an exhibit of a museum.

I learned so much and had a great conversation with the tour guide - we even stood around for awhile after the tour talking. I left feeling energized by the thought-provoking conversations and history lesson I had. The home is in a nice, cute neighborhood. There is a small bookstore inside, as well as a waiting area with chairs and restrooms. You must be on a tour to view the home, so check the website before you go because they have limited hours.

Our party space consisted of two good sized rooms: the Parlor - which was the space where we had all the guests comfortably seated at the round tables for dinner; and the Sun Room - which held an array of generous appetizers, food and beverages buffet displayed on the long tables alongside the windows. This was easily staged to make a perfect buffet line which flowed smoothly. The Sun Room was bright and airy and I loved the tiled terracotta floor. I let my guests know that if they arrived earlier, they would have an opportunity to take part in the tour of the well preserved historical plantation estate.

That's right, this pile of well-mortared bricks has been around longer than your country's independence. So why isn't it open more? In all the years I lived in Bowie, I got to visit once. ONCE. It wasn't even on a field trip, as they certainly DON'T invite local school children to visit. Visits are by appointment only. City of Bowie, I know you mean well, but if you want more people to like you, maybe you should show them something worth being proud of, like a freaking gorgeous 250+ year old historical landmark! It's so easy to forget it's even there with the way you keep it locked away from public viewing. You've got so much more going for you than an I-got-shot-in-broad-daylight shopping mall. And I know you pretend it doesn't happen, but I have totally climbed your Tulip Poplar trees lining Tulip Grove Drive a million times. As a Bowieite, I felt it was my right, if not duty, to see to it that at least some part of Bowie's actually interesting history got use.

The house was later expanded and renovated for use as officer and employee housing for the DC's low-security Workhouse Prison Farm in Lorton. I am a big fan of historical places. This house has a lot of history behind it, but there is not much to it. You can only see it from the outside. It is fenced off and you cannot go in. There is a little area in front of the house that has a few benches and placards with historical information about the house. There is also an old brick fireplace looking structure on the grounds. There is a few places to park on the grounds that are unpaved, but there are no official parking spots. You could probably hang out on one of the benches on the grounds, but outside of that, I do not see much utility or spending a lot of time here. I was here for all of 10 minutes and then I was out.
