McKenzie Guest House - Random bramble on the floor by the bed

    McKenzie Guest House

    (11 reviews)

Do not book this house if you want any rest or peace!! Read past reviews! I wish I had. We wasted…read more$263 for one night in this dirty loud room. To start off, Instructions to our room were incorrect. It says to park in the back then exit your vehicle to the walkway and go left at the Y, then up a staircase on your right and the Travis door would be the second door on the right and to use the keypad. There is no door on the second floor that says Travis with a keypad. You have to go around to the front of the house and find the door on the FIRST floor that says Travis with the keypad to get in. We were checking in at night and after trying all the stairs at the back of the house where we were told to park and looking at all of the doors, we finally went to the front of the house and found our correct room/door on the first floor. This place is only good if you're a hard sleeper, or if you're here to party and stay up until 2:00 am. Bring ear plugs if you want any sleep before 2:00 am!! The details say quiet time at the house starts at 10:00 pm, but why bother with that "rule" when this house sits across the street from a bar/music venue that stays open until 2:00 am.. You can hear their music blaring and thumping, cars screeching down the side road, people talking on the sidewalks and street, and we even heard a girl throwing up outside at 12:40 am. Also heard an irate man who was kicked out of the bar wandering the street in front of the house screaming profanity and racist comments from 12:30-1:00. It was a great spectacle to watch from our balcony since we couldn't sleep. We heard most of this noise from inside the bedroom while we were trying to sleep, which we did not get to do until after 2:00 as we also heard the bar close and everyone empty out onto the street in front of the house. The battery was missing in the fan/light remote in the bedroom so you couldn't use the fan to help cool the room or to help with white noise. I would've thought this was checked when the room was "cleaned" before our arrival. There was a used k cup still in the coffee maker from whoever stayed last. I would've thought this was checked when the room was "cleaned" before our arrival. There also seemed to be a little white mold spot on the wood floor under the AC unit, and tons of stains on the old carpet on the stairs. Also the shower liner was disgusting, the bathroom tiles were dirty, and the toilet brush by the toilet was disgusting. I wish I did more research on the location of this house, but the bar did not show up on the map. While the house was cute on the outside, the "suite" itself definitely didn't feel like a suite, nor did it feel clean, safe, or relaxing. Such a waste of $263 for ONE night. I was hoping paying more for a place for one night, it would be better than some local hotels but boy were we wrong.

This rundown location is extremely noisy and not at all a place of rest. At first I thought it…read moremight just be the front units that would be impossible to sleep in, but then all of the drag racing and 2:00 engine revving disabused me of that notion. It also lacks even the most basics. It has a kitchen but no wash rag for the sink, nor any ice trays for the freezer. A Kurig, but no coffee pods (not even the cheapest of stuff that roadside motels nowadays offer). No facial tissues to be found anywhere?? Table stakes. Also, must add that this place is potentially quite insecure. There is an external keypad (only) for the entry door, but no way to lock that from within (see photo). Thus, presumably, whomever has stayed previously in your "suite" or who maybe is/has been employed here in some capacity could possibly access your room at any hour of the day or night. And will add - importantly - that the dumpy little bar across the street is open until 2:00a SEVEN DAYS A WEEK. Thump, thump, thump all night long, accompanied by drunken wailing and constant comings and goings of loud trucks with a minimal exhaust system (if any). One will enjoy slamming automobile doors every handful of minutes, especially towards closing time. The music also gets louder and louder as the witching hour approaches - an old bar manager trick to the drinkers a-drinkin.' Oh, patrons park directly in front of McKenzie - literally right outside of your front door if you happen to be in a front unit (woe is you). You are expected to park in the back and walk around if in a front unit. Within the building, there's seemingly zero sound-proofing, either vertically or horizontally. Can clearly make out the words of everyone around you at all hours (made some recordings if ownership/management is ever interested). Which, of course, in turn means that every single thing you say within the confines of your room is up for grabs by all of your neighbors. If you book a ground floor room, every single footstep above will be experienced loudly. As far as aforementioned ownership/management, just know that they will be utterly unsympathetic to any pleas regarding any of this - it's, you know, beyond their control or ability to remedy (even though they haven't warned you about any of this as part of the booking process). This property is a red flag DO NOT STAY under any circumstances - including if the only alternative is to sleep in your vehicle. You were warned.

This isn't the best caverns I've visited within a Texas State Park, but it is pretty darn cool. The…read morebest caverns tour is at Kickapoo Caverns. I did a wild cave tour without the extra charges that Longhorn collects. At Longhorn, our guide, Johnson did an amazing job with our small group of six people for the 10:45 AM tour. My brother and I initially registered for the 11:00 AM tour and am glad that we were suggested another time. We passed by the 11:00 AM tour and they had 40+ people in their group. Johnson showed us cool geological formations. We saw dolomite, calcium bicarbonate, chert, limestone, geodes, stalagmites, stalactites, and quartz crystals. Johnson is somewhat funny; he had a bit of quirky and dry humor. I enjoyed the history of the caverns, but some of it I thought was interesting. It was really delightful to learn that in the 1800's, before the CCC got involved, the locals would dance and play music turning the cave into an auditorium of entertainment. Johnson said that if certain geological formations glows, it is growing. Very catchy phase for memory. I got to see a few bats hanging out. They were tricolor bats which are smallest bats. The cave is cool, but thankfully not slippery. I was wearing no grip support shoes, but I didn't fall or have the urge to fall. There are mats on the floor of the cave to prevent falls. Johnson gave us more time to look around and admire the geology. My brother and I weren't required to bring our own flashlights. Johnson had a flashlight, but forgot to grab the blacklights. What I find is strange is that this is a state park that you cannot renew your state park pass at. This park headquarters is very different than the rest considering that there's a third party company handing the cave tours, they sell ice-cees, popcorn, and the gift shop is very big and vast. The others don't have this. It is questionable to me. I was told that I needed to go to Inks Lake to renew my pass. The cave tours are very pricey. Kickapoo Caverns tour was very affordable at $10. You can use the park pass. You can't get your state park passport stamped at Longhorn Caverns either. It seems like Longhorn Caverns is more for profit and the history about the cavern could be overly exaggerated to attract customers. My opinion. It was hard to believe half of the things what Johnson was telling us. There's one portion of geological formation in the cave that is "dead" because in year 1919, the locals went exploring by touching the formation it "killed" it. I preferred Kickapoo Caverns and the Caverns of Sonora a lot more. Even Inner Space Caverns and Natural Bridge were very exciting to see. Longhorn is cool, but didn't give me that WOW-factor, but I still had a ton of fun on a Sunday morning.

Our guide shared stories about the cavern's formations including the stalactites and stalagmites. My favourite spot was the Cathedral area with its open space and unique rock shapes. Above ground, the park is just as lovely. There are short trails around the park in the middle of Texas Hill Country. Whether you're into geology, history, or just looking for a cool escape from the Texas heat, Longhorn Cavern is worth the trip out of the city.

We booked the King Alexander room, but were changed last minute to the Queen Elizabeth. We are on the tail end of a getaway weekend, so we wanted to rest and relax on our last night, before we go home. Pros - We were the only ones there, so it was nice and quiet. The beds were very comfortable. Cons - We were the only ones there, and had no one to help answer questions about the town, or help us when we couldn't get our TV to work (football games). We brought a sound machine, but had we not... you would be able to hear EVERYTHING in that house. Also, there was quite a bit of lights from the front of the house (outside) that flood the room at night. It was very bright. My biggest frustration came with the service. Usually they serve breakfast, but because the owner (I think?) was injured we got vouchers to the Bluebonnet cafe... sounds great ... except it's closed until January 2nd. We rely on yelp for quite a bit, but it would have been nice to have a human around to give recommendations of another local place to eat. It just wasn't a very traditional B&B experience. Everyone who left reviews said how awesome the food was ... and we left with empty stomachs. What a bummer! We ended up just packing up and heading back home. I certainly feel like I overpaid for what I got out of this experience. All in all... we were able to relax on our last night, and the B&B was very clean and cute. But I think next time we will just stay in Fredericksburg another evening.

(due to Covid19) This was not an issue for anyone attending the tour and the company got all $2800 paid for in full. 2. Yes $2800. We had 28 people in our group, It required two buses that were at their max capacity. 3. I would give a HUGE ZERO if I could. The buses arrived at the pick up location 25 minutes early and expected us (all 28) to load up. Not all 28 people were even there yet. The male driver already seemed annoyed at this point. We ended up pulling out at the agreed on time. When trying to leave the 2nd winery we couldn't. The drivers HAD LEFT and weren't there to pick us up. We waited outside in the sun outside for 30 minutes before they even got back. But that unfortunately is not why I am writing this review As we were loading the bus to go home the male driver said that would be charging us for a cleaning fee ($300) because someone spilt something on the floorboard. Pretty steep for a small spill that could be wiped up with a Clorox wipe but she agreed to pay it she sat down. Comments started to be exchanged about the steep fee and how the day had been complete chaos up until this point. The man began to get pretty heated and slammed the door. When he opened the door to his seat he said "who the f**k spilt something in my seat." Nobody had spilled something on his seat. Upon looking at the "spill" it appeared to be sweat from Him. He continued to cuss and yell and eventually told us to "get off his bus." We all piled off and the other bus also unloaded. Now it is important to note the other driver said we didn't do anything wrong and that she didn't agree with how he was handling things. He told her he was in charge and that he would make the call. She became quiet after that. They ultimately left us there to find our own rides. The male driver was rude and didn't speak unless spoken to the entire day. A beautiful day with amazing company was RUINED by this company and I will not recommend them to anyone!
