This is where you go for all things flammable. And, be ready to social distance to get it! Our turkey burger dinner took a bit of a hiccup when we finally ran out of gas in our grill. Since there is a propane shortage, Thornton's seems to be the only stop in the area that carries it. Their propane was a bit more expensive, and looked a little different than your usual propane brands, but who cares! Maybe they have their own distributor? The process to purchase propane was a little slow, but for a great reason. Thornton's means business when it comes to social distancing. There were 12 other people in line ahead of me, and with their very strict socially distanced markers placed around the store, I was far back in the line. Why so busy? Because Thornton's is also a major distributor of cigarettes in the area. When in line, you must stand on the designated sticker. There was one guy who got off the sticker a bit, and someone told him to get back on! It was kind of like being in the grade school lineup. No messing around! The process to get propane, was to wait in line. You don't have to worry about carrying your empty can with you. You can leave that outside. The guy behind the plexi-shield counter said he'd come out and meet me. Once I got up to the line and paid, I went outside and waited. The guy came right out, and I was on my way. Thornton's rocks. I'm not one to write negative reviews. That said, I'm genuinely appalled by the rudeness and ageism I just watched my father experience. I'm 21, he is a boomer. This woman at the register (20s, Black, long black braids) was condescending, patronizing, and directly mocked him to his face. She was impatient and snappy while he was making his transaction, and after the purchase went through, she "cheered" for him for an embarrassingly long amount of time. When I stepped in and said, "Hey, I know my dad is a Boomer, but there's no need to be rude." she genuinely lit up, almost excited for a confrontation. She said "Who's being rude? I'm not being rude." and I took a beat before saying, "girl I'm not stupid, you're directly mocking him to his face." She actually started to call her co-worker over, to which I said, "Seriously? And now you're gonna make a scene?" before walking out. Literally the RUDEST interaction from someone in "customer service" I've EVER seen. read more

Finally got a Thorntons here in HP and boy is it packed all of the time! The gas prices are definitely lower than most in the area and the main reason that I come here? THE .69 cent drinks in any size and the .89 cent slushies! Ever since they opened, this place draws in a crowd. There is quite the selection of drinks, coffees, and snacks. Has gas 3.27 Been here a couple of times...easy to get into and right by the expressway if one needs gas....I believe this one is also in Lake county so of course..lower tax. Staff inside was social and nice...place was clean and pretty big..and both times I seen the Highland Park police here so I can even say pretty safe? It's usually my go to gas station when I need gas and I'm around town, since it's down the street from my house and it's cheaper than the shell across the street. Haven't been inside for years so I can't say what's like but I have to guess it's pretty much the same with lots of food and drink choices. Regular unleaded is often 5¢ ~ 10¢ cheaper than many of the other stations in the area. Their pumps are modern pay-at-the-pump models, which always seem to work (a lot of the stations in the area have problems printing receipts). Their pump area is well lit, their canopy is large to keep the weather out, and they have plenty of parking. The market area is well stocked and maintained, featuring a HUGE variety of hot & cold drinks and snacks for road warriors - coffee, lattes, blended ice drinks, lemonade, tea, lots of fountain drinks, and they've got so many canned or bottled drinks to choose from. It's not always on late at night, but during most daytime hours they have really good soft-serve ice cream. If you miss the soft-serve, there's always plenty of ice cream novelties in their freezer, and even quarts of ice cream in the back. Their 2-for-$3 dog deal (mix and match all-beef hot dogs, Polish sausages, or bratwurst) is a pretty good deal, and they have a lot of fresh toppings to pile on. Their pizza rollers are fairly good, by mini-mart standards. There are some pretty decent sandwiches in the cooler, though nothing special. They have a fair selection of groceries, home goods, travel accessories, OTC medications, and auto accessories if you need to grab something quick at 2 in the morning. The staff are all pretty friendly, and seem to keep the place nice and clean. Late at night; they can sometimes get a little swamped when there is only one attendant helping half-a-dozen customers, but they do their best to power through a cache. The restrooms are probably the cleanest of any gas station in the area. There's a nice grassy area just to the north that you can let a dog run around, and go potty as well (please clean up after them). There are a few parking spots on the north side of the main building, which are nicely lit and are good for chilling out for a few minutes and eating a quick snack. I see HPPD cruisers around somewhat regularly, so the place seems fairly safe. When I need to gas up, or want a late-late night bite to eat, Thorntons on Skokie is one of my top go-to spots. read more

They have a soft serve machine with about 8 flavors to choose from. It's vanilla soft serve with a flavor blast. Toppings include: crumbled waffle cone, sprinkles, oreos, gummy bears, peanuts. When I made mine, I went to the coffee bar and put chocolate syrup with whip cream on mine! I was in heaven! :) The drinks are really cheap also. The coffee is $.89 for any size with unlimited toppings! They have about 4 syrups you can mix into the coffee with a variety of different coffee to choose from. They need to treat customers with respect and dignity which I found doesn't exist in the employees at this location. Gas that is cheaper than most places around. The most expensive it will be is equal to the other stations. So if I'm in the area I'll just head here because I know its at a pricepoint that makes me happy. I dont't know where to start. I love Thorntons! They always have the lowest prices, atleast as far as the northshore goes. The staff is very friendly and polite. Thorntons is extremely well maintained and I think they take pridein it. The foods and drinks are extremely cheap. Any size coffee for 89 cents? Thank you good sir! I love the french vanilla they carry. I officially stopped getting cheap coffee at Dunkin and simply make my way out here. Worst customer service experience I've ever had at a gas station... which is saying a lot. I'm fine with employees not being fake nice... I don't need to be coddled. However, I'd appreciate not being treated like a pest (which was my experience). I tried to exchange propane and, since this was my first time doing so, I walked into the store with the tank to ask what the proper procedure was. Instead of a simple "oh please leave the tank on the side - it shouldn't be in here - and i'll meet you there in a sec to help!" the cashier yelled at me to "get out of [her] store" and that she was "not trying to die today." I made an honest mistake by bringing the tank in with me, but the proper way to respond to this WAS NOT by lambasting the customer. I've worked in the service industry... Brand new, this gas station has been slammed since their opening. Their prices are more than a nickel less than the BP across the street. It is by far the lowest priced station on the North Shore. They also have a nice convenience store with a ton of selections. This would easily be 5 stars if it weren't for the constant hoards of people that flock to the station. Oh, the poor Shell station across the street. After years of ripping people off on gas, drinks, smokes, etc. They finally have some competition and I must say that Thorntons has it all. First, the gas is always cheaper than anything you will find in the area. Also, the variety of goodies inside make it worth the time to look around and see what you might fancy. The hot dogs are Ball Park Franks and always fresh with warm buns always . They have 69 cent soda with tons of variety and the crushed ice. Soft serve ice cream, freshly squeezed OJ and Lemonade. The coffee is always fresh and 89 cents for any size. It's tough to go in there and not buy any of the goodies. They double charged me on purpose because my self serve ice cream cone was "too tall".

This location is the WORST!!! You ask to pay inside at the pump and you stand outside waiting for them to reset the pump so you can get your gas! After a while of waiting and pump not being reset you have to go walk inside and ask for pump to be reset so you can buy gas! This has happened many times and is frustrating! Then as you walk back inside to pay as I did today, there are at least 4 employees that I see but only 2 on the registers and one announces her register is only taking credit card customers. The line now has 10 people waiting to pay at the registers and they are all as frustrated as I am because it is taking forever to get to pay!! This is a more common experience then not! This location needs better leadership that will prioritize taking care of the customers in a timely manner. The wait time to pay is ridiculous and the pumps seem to be ignored because we always have to walk inside and ask them to turn it on because they don't do it otherwise! If you ring the assistance bell out by the pumps that goes unanswered and ignored as well. Very poor customer service! The Shell right across the street is 2cents more a gallon but service is great and very prompt! I'll be going there from now on! read more

I like this Thornton's, good prices, good selection of food/products. 99% of the staff are helpful and friendly. One worker, Sue, is continually rude to customers. Her demeanor is very uninviting and does not make customers feel valued or welcome. It has been brought to management's attention (Marcus) several times, in which he acknowledges he gets frequent complaints on Sue, but the unacceptable attitude and service continues.
