Thon Thai is an Asian food truck with a changing daily menu that offers an eclectic spread of stir fried and braised proteins served with either fried rice, jasmine-coconut white rice, noodles (Lo Mein) or Pad Thai. I first went there a couple of weeks ago and the truck quickly became a regular destination during their weekend hours.
The first thing you notice is the dedication of the staff. Everyone working there is willing to go into detail of how each plate is prepared and served and you get a sense of the work and preparation that goes into every aspect of the meal. They're very friendly and keep a clean work space that's easily seen from the counter. It's truly wonderful to see how much use they get off of such a small space, when fully furnished restaurants fall short in comparison. When they get swarmed during lunch rush or they simply have a busy night, you may have to wait for a while since each entree is cooked to order, but the food is well worth the wait.
Their menu changes regularly depending on what produce is available, but there are several staples. My personal favorite are the porkbelly buns. I'm not sure about the exact process of how they prepare the porkbelly, but you will be hardpressed to find a more tender or succulent pork in the area. It literally melts in your mouth. Another favorite was the spicy sesame chicken stir-fry; accompanied by their excellent coconut jasmine rice of course. Fresh chicken thighs chopped in bite sized pieces with an incredibly light and airy breading in a thick sweet, savory and spicy sauce. The sauce holds the right amount of heat, not something that will intimidate spicy food lovers. The chicken is tender and succulent and I've never had a complaint about having leftover tendon or bone in the meat--an all too common complaint from other restaurants. The rice is loose, spongy, perfectly cooked to just-tender and has a hint of sweetness from the coconut that is perfect for balancing the heat in the dish. The attention to detail the chef demonstrates is what sets this place apart from the rest. You'll never find mushy overcooked noodles or raw grains of rice and everything is prepared through traditional technique--no bottled, mass produced sauces here. And don't get me started on the desserts!
My only complaint, if it can be called that, is that some of their dishes (like their sesame chicken) shouldn't be taken to go since you lose the texture of the light breading to the sauce if you wait too long to eat it. So carry out at your own risk. Still, this is easily one of the best new food trucks available and if you're looking for a new take on Asian cuisine that is affordable and satisfying this is the place to go. read more
