I would like to give this two and a half stars, but that's not possible, so I'm going with 2…read more We tented right along the pond (its not really a lake). The sites there are pretty, but not especially flat for tents. The pool is nice, well maintained with lots of seating. Great bathrooms, clean and well kept (possibly the cheapest toilet paper on the planet, though). Lots of other fun campground things to do like a game room, hay rides on the weekends, giant chess board, pedal bikes, canoe and peddle boat rentals, basketball courts and a bar. The bar. That seemed to be the source of the bad side of this campground. There's no information about a bar plus VERY loud, late music they play on the weekends on the website and I feel like we got the bait and switch. The rules as listed make it seem like its a family-friendly campground (quiet times are posted and there seem to be strict rules about kids making trouble and being off their sites after curfew). Maybe if you're staying in an RV with the air running this is no big deal to you. Maybe you like taking your kids to a campground where you can go after dark to drink and listen to loud music. This is your place! If not, try a state park. We had a great time at Timber Lake until dark, and then it was a bit of a nightmare. Tenters, and the peace-seeking campers beware.

I have camped here many times, however, I've been lazy and I haven't written a review yet! I was…read moreprompted to write a review because I camped at a different place this weekend and it was AWFUL. This morning I am feeling very appreciative of Timber Lake so I felt the need to type out my thoughts. Timber Lake is incredibly well maintained. The tent sites by the lake are spacious and feel very private. I would suggest putting up your tent with the door facing the lake. The tent blocks the RV sites and you really have the feeling that you're alone. It's lovely. The pool, restrooms, and showers are clean and well maintained. The staff is very friendly and the manager lives on the property. I read a few of the other reviews and I'd like to comment on the bar situation. Yes, there's a bar and yes - they play music. However, Timber Lake DOES enforce it's posted quiet hours. We have never been kept awake by people partying here. It's kind of the best of both worlds. You can go to the bar, the pool, etc... but you also have a restful/peaceful night. They have a general store in case you forget something. One of my favorite things about Timber Lake is that they have coffee, donuts, and biscuits and gravy available on Saturday and Sunday mornings for very little money. There are indoor tables and chairs set up if you'd like to eat your breakfast inside while watching the news. For the theatre-lovers among you - Timber Lake Playhouse is just up the driveway. They put on fun/lively musicals and plays with professional actors/directors/etc. I highly recommend this place for tent campers, cabin campers, and RV folks. Thanks Ron and everyone on staff at Timber Lake!

The public restrooms are in this building however, and you will have people coming and going during your event. It wasn't too busy today so not a problem. There is plenty of open grassy area to play, didn't get enough wind to be able to fly the kites, but we were close! But we definitely had a lot of room to kick the soccer ball, throw the football and run around. The grill worked great, it's 4 feet long and we were able to cook plenty of burgers and hotdog and such for the family. There's also a couple of electrical outlets so we were able to plug-in a couple crockpots for beans and such. There are quite a few mice living in this facility, so just be aware of that, but you are out in the country! There are many hikes and such that leave from this location so you could use this as homebase with other family members being able to go out and take a great hike as well. We had a great day and I have a feeling this is going to become a tradition PS. Bring the bug spray :)

This is a nice peaceful spot about 30 minutes away. Most of the sites here seem to be long-term for the summer And our Park homes or RVs with permanent attachments. The pool was really nice and it seems many people were enjoying it. The weekend nights were busy, but everyone appeared to leave on Sunday night, so it was very quiet the last couple nights. Most of the short term sites just have power and electric, but there is a dump site up by the office. The laundry room had two washers and two dryers and worked great during our stay washing was $2.75 and drying was a dollar for 45 minutes. They do have rolls of quarters at the front office. I do have to say that the staff here were super kind and helpful whenever we needed anything. We weren't here most of the time during the day since we were visiting our grandkids, but it looks like the kids here we're having great fun, fishing in the pond, catching fish and turtles! If you have the ability to bring your bikes, I would definitely do that as you are right next to the great bike trail. You can ride right into Savannah or other places. It's a very extensive trail.

Limestone bluffs, deep ravines, springs, streams and wildlife characterize this area. Once a part of a vast sea bottom that stretched from the Alleghenies to the Rockies, the scenic canyon area was formed by the action of the winding waters of the Apple River." My husband and I have been coming here since the late 90's. We love it here. Pros: + Only 2 1/2 hours from Chicago. + Did you read that paragraph above that I took from the website? It's BEAUTIFUL here. + 5 awesome hiking trails; some of them easier than others. + Hike (or drive) down to the river from your campsite. There's some good fishing. And our dogs love to swim in it. (Swimming for you is prohibited, however.) + 2 big loops in the campground. Most of them are nicely sized and thoughtfully spaced apart. + Only 15 minutes to Stockton (the closest town) for groceries and firewood. + Eight bucks per night for a non-electrical site. Cons: - I am not there right now. I am at my desk, rotting under flourescent lighting. This is the kind of place that, as soon as we arrive, I'm already saying, "I don't want to go home!" But I want to be completely honest - there are no showers here, and only pit toilets. There are, of course, 2 or 3 water stations in each loop (pump). So, if maintaining hygiene is the number one most important thing for you during a camping weekend, you may not find ARC as perfect as I do. Me? I try my best to make do. You're camping for God's sake! Shower when you go home! See you at Apple River Canyon!

Cosy Corners is a small, family owned campground, quite literally in the couples backyard! Barbara and Dave, the owners were fantastic and absolutely went above and beyond to ensure we had a great experience with them. For example, I needed ice from the store and was given a ride in their golf cart. At one point it rained pretty heavily and as soon as it stopped, they came out to offer us all towels. the couple have a vast knowledge of the area and spent a good while talking with us about the things we could do 'off the beaten path'. Did I mention that this campground is at the entrance to Matthiessen State Park and only a mile south of Starved Rock!! Perfect placement. Also, you don't have to worry about the alcohol bans in the state parks if you stay here. The campsite was dog friendly provided the pups stay on leash. The only thing I could say that may put you off would be that there is no shower facility! This didn't bother us, we are experienced campers and had no issue showering under a hose. there are a couple of hoses around so you can access running water. Oh, anther thing! The cleanest camping porta johns I have ever used. They smelled clean and were also lit at night! OK, I could go on all day. I had a fantastic experience and every one of the 10 people in my group on the Saturday night swore they would return. The service provided by Barbara and Dave is second to none! I can't wait to go back!

They had Karaoke on Friday night and a band on Saturday in a barn on the property. We didn't go to either but since the barn is fairly enclosed it didn't bother us. This place is pretty quiet durning the day, like I said it's a super relaxed vibe, maybe because when we were there lots of spots were open. Management is great, friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. There are lots of seasonal's and plenty of nightly camping spots too. The RV spots are basically in a grassy field with some gravel, not perfectly level but not so bad that we had to pull out leveling blocks. Big nice trees everywhere. They have a nice playground and a great pond! It seems that they go to the effort to dump fresh sand on one side of the pond so that it's kind of like a beach and it makes to bottom of the pond sandy instead of muddy. There is also a big fountain in the pond that helps circulate the water and I suspect filter some of it. They don't have wifi but we didn't mind. We have been to so many RV parks that "offer" wifi but then you get there and it's so crapy that you feel a little cheated. I'd much rather know what I'm in for up front. AND we had great cell service (att) so we could do anything we wanted to. Happy camping!!
