We loved the lush fresh flower arrangements in our room and throughout the entire inn. The common areas (breakfast area/living on main floor and the outdoor patio) are similarly beautiful, with comfortable seating and beautiful vistas. The food - from the afternoon appetizer/cheese/wine tray to the incredible breakfast - was really delicious. And I could go on. For instance, the carpeting was what you would find in a mansion. The linens and towels were luxurious. We were provided with a bottle of wine and appetizers in the evening. There was a nice variety and a more than ample amount. Breakfast in the morning was out of this world! 3 Courses!!! Entrees were expertly prepared and delicious -- and healthy! Probably our favorite was the steel-cut oats with fruit and a banana foster sauce -- YUM! Again, these portions were very generous. Our host, Matthew, was very kind and attentive. I don't think there are enough superlatives to describe our experience!

Four traditionally furnished bedrooms (two queens, one king, and one king suite) have tasteful colors, lots of light, and crafted details. Each of the second floor bedrooms has an en suite bathroom with different combinations of tubs and/or showers. A huge bonus is a pleasant communal kitchen at the end of the wide hallway which has a small outside landing. We stayed in the Charles Baldwin Room with a lovely four-poster bed. Peggy reviews all breakfast choices for guests with an eye to any specific dietary needs and from continental to full breakfast has generous, delicious options. The welcoming entry opens to a main floor with a quiet living room, classic dining room, and enjoyable game/billiards room. This is not a remodel; this total rebuild was done with thoughtful planning and superb craftsmanship by the owners Dan and Peggy Fisher. Many aspects of the maple window trims, pocket doors, and wood flooring were custom made by Dan and his crew. The exterior is still in process. Wood was an important economic driver of Clinton, so the woodwork is a tribute to the town. We are already revising travel plans to revisit Fisher House. That says it all.

Recently, I needed to be in Maquoketa, Iowa, for a wedding, and I was glad to learn of the highly reviewed Squiers Manor B&B. With short notice I was able to make a reservation in the Beulah Room, named after one of the Squiers daughter's who grew up and was married in the house, whose father the house was built for. It was a lovely room with a twin bed for our 9 year old daughter, and at a most reasonable price too. The furnishings in our room and all the others we were able to see, were stunning. This may have been the finest B&B I have ever stayed in anywhere in the US and Canada. But not only was the building grand, and furnishings fantastic (Kathy and her husband are antique dealers and have searched high and low for the most amazing furnishings for their B&B), the hospitality was grand too. Kathy accommodated our need to check in a bit before standard check in between 4-8pm, and kindly greeted us and gave us a full tour of the house. If we have any disappointment at all, it was that we could not stay longer, enjoy the evening dessert or partake of the morning breakfast. We have heard it is great. We can't wait to get back to Maquoketa again and visit Squiers Manor again, and we would tell you to make a reservation here if you are passing through or staying for a few days in the area, it is a MAGNIFICENT B&B.

I picked this place because it looks much like my grandmothers house from the 1800s and wow was it similar. Spoke with the owner for an hour about the character and all the special features. It was so cool to learn more and appreciate her passion. I can't wait to come back and enjoy the amazing breakfast she likes to cook and stay in another room to try it out. She told us the history of the house, how she became the ninth owner and also helped us find the only restaurant open on Christmas within a 30 mile radius. She then gave us a gift of local wine and a tiny Christmas ornament. So great! Another thing I appreciated about this B&B is when I was looking up places in Galena, I noticed a rather disturbing trend of a lot of places having beautiful buildings, but then were either ridiculously expensive or else inside things got really hokey. Like with in room jacuzzi tubs or everything Super Girly with pink and lace exploding everywhere. Thanks for keeping it simple & elegant, Hellman, we are excited to come back again.
