Several men were drinking in the hallway outside my room-go to the parking lot or someone else's room??! The hotel advertises a "24-hour cancellation policy," but I was told it only applies before check-in--not 24 hours before any night you want to cancel. This was NOT clearly explained at booking or check-in. When I asked to leave early the staff were unhelpful and the manager was unavailable. I was told that I would have to pay for the full five days. I had to get his staff to call the manager and talked to him on their cell phone. he was rude and dismissive. He finally agreed that he would "work it out" so that I could leave early. Then I was charged for an extra night after I had already left. The manager claimed I missed a 3 PM cancellation cutoff and cancelled at 5:37. Of course the 3pm thing was never disclosed to me. This place is poorly managed, with unclear policies and rude staff. I've disputed the charges with my credit card and reported the issue to the booking site. If you value your safety and money, avoid this hotel.

The sites there are pretty, but not especially flat for tents. The pool is nice, well maintained with lots of seating. Great bathrooms, clean and well kept (possibly the cheapest toilet paper on the planet, though). Lots of other fun campground things to do like a game room, hay rides on the weekends, giant chess board, pedal bikes, canoe and peddle boat rentals, basketball courts and a bar. The bar. That seemed to be the source of the bad side of this campground. There's no information about a bar plus VERY loud, late music they play on the weekends on the website and I feel like we got the bait and switch. The rules as listed make it seem like its a family-friendly campground (quiet times are posted and there seem to be strict rules about kids making trouble and being off their sites after curfew). Maybe if you're staying in an RV with the air running this is no big deal to you. Maybe you like taking your kids to a campground where you can go after dark to drink and listen to loud music. This is your place! If not, try a state park. We had a great time at Timber Lake until dark, and then it was a bit of a nightmare. Tenters, and the peace-seeking campers beware.

I was…read moreprompted to write a review because I camped at a different place this weekend and it was AWFUL. This morning I am feeling very appreciative of Timber Lake so I felt the need to type out my thoughts. Timber Lake is incredibly well maintained. The tent sites by the lake are spacious and feel very private. I would suggest putting up your tent with the door facing the lake. The tent blocks the RV sites and you really have the feeling that you're alone. It's lovely. The pool, restrooms, and showers are clean and well maintained. The staff is very friendly and the manager lives on the property. I read a few of the other reviews and I'd like to comment on the bar situation. Yes, there's a bar and yes - they play music. However, Timber Lake DOES enforce it's posted quiet hours. We have never been kept awake by people partying here. It's kind of the best of both worlds. You can go to the bar, the pool, etc... but you also have a restful/peaceful night. They have a general store in case you forget something. One of my favorite things about Timber Lake is that they have coffee, donuts, and biscuits and gravy available on Saturday and Sunday mornings for very little money. There are indoor tables and chairs set up if you'd like to eat your breakfast inside while watching the news. For the theatre-lovers among you - Timber Lake Playhouse is just up the driveway. They put on fun/lively musicals and plays with professional actors/directors/etc. I highly recommend this place for tent campers, cabin campers, and RV folks. Thanks Ron and everyone on staff at Timber Lake!

With each tasting you get a wine glass to take home. They have a great selection for all pallets. Their wines have quirky law enforcement/legal names such as So Sue Me Sue, Smooth Criminal, and Double Jeopardy. They also offer charcuterie boards which are quite delicious. Recently, I needed to be in Maquoketa, Iowa, for a wedding, and I was glad to learn of the highly reviewed Squiers Manor B&B. With short notice I was able to make a reservation in the Beulah Room, named after one of the Squiers daughter's who grew up and was married in the house, whose father the house was built for. It was a lovely room with a twin bed for our 9 year old daughter, and at a most reasonable price too. The furnishings in our room and all the others we were able to see, were stunning. This may have been the finest B&B I have ever stayed in anywhere in the US and Canada. But not only was the building grand, and furnishings fantastic (Kathy and her husband are antique dealers and have searched high and low for the most amazing furnishings for their B&B), the hospitality was grand too. Kathy accommodated our need to check in a bit before standard check in between 4-8pm, and kindly greeted us and gave us a full tour of the house. If we have any disappointment at all, it was that we could not stay longer, enjoy the evening dessert or partake of the morning breakfast. We have heard it is great. We can't wait to get back to Maquoketa again and visit Squiers Manor again, and we would tell you to make a reservation here if you are passing through or staying for a few days in the area, it is a MAGNIFICENT B&B.

Raven's Grinn is a haunted house in the same way that the Addam's Famly or Munsters house would be considered a haunted house. Half labyrinth, half art museum, half insane asylum in all the best ways possible. I spent two hours in the house and in the last 5 minutes found a secret passage that we still hadn't found. You won't find Freddy/Jason/Chucky anywhere in this house, but a large collection of eclectic art/furniture/stuff that leaves you confused, and maybe a bit uneasy. The Warfield's (owners) gave us a quick tour of the building and the different floors and then let us loose. They asked that we be respectful of a couple rules and areas that are off limits outside due to some storm damage and their private living areas, otherwise we had free reign of the "haunted" side. There is a ton of places to hide and get lost in so that each round took about an hour to find everyone. Hidden passageways, doors, and rooms are everywhere. I'm already trying to collect a group of friends together to go play again so I can explore further and see if there are any hidden areas that were missed. Big thanks to the Warfield's for creating such a unique experience that I'm happy to make the 2 hour drive from Chicago to do again.
