There are five bedrooms in the lodge as well as a number of cabins on the property for sleeping. The grounds are lovely and peaceful, and there are several additional buildings for parties or meetings. It's only about 1 1/2 hours from O'Hare, which made it very easy for our out-of-town attendees as well as those of us who are more local to the Chicago/Rockford area. Keith and Lisa were wonderful hosts who were always available for any questions or assistance we needed. Highly recommend!

The sites there are pretty, but not especially flat for tents. The pool is nice, well maintained with lots of seating. Great bathrooms, clean and well kept (possibly the cheapest toilet paper on the planet, though). Lots of other fun campground things to do like a game room, hay rides on the weekends, giant chess board, pedal bikes, canoe and peddle boat rentals, basketball courts and a bar. The bar. That seemed to be the source of the bad side of this campground. There's no information about a bar plus VERY loud, late music they play on the weekends on the website and I feel like we got the bait and switch. The rules as listed make it seem like its a family-friendly campground (quiet times are posted and there seem to be strict rules about kids making trouble and being off their sites after curfew). Maybe if you're staying in an RV with the air running this is no big deal to you. Maybe you like taking your kids to a campground where you can go after dark to drink and listen to loud music. This is your place! If not, try a state park. We had a great time at Timber Lake until dark, and then it was a bit of a nightmare. Tenters, and the peace-seeking campers beware.

This morning I am feeling very appreciative of Timber Lake so I felt the need to type out my thoughts. Timber Lake is incredibly well maintained. The tent sites by the lake are spacious and feel very private. I would suggest putting up your tent with the door facing the lake. The tent blocks the RV sites and you really have the feeling that you're alone. It's lovely. The pool, restrooms, and showers are clean and well maintained. The staff is very friendly and the manager lives on the property. I read a few of the other reviews and I'd like to comment on the bar situation. Yes, there's a bar and yes - they play music. However, Timber Lake DOES enforce it's posted quiet hours. We have never been kept awake by people partying here. It's kind of the best of both worlds. You can go to the bar, the pool, etc... but you also have a restful/peaceful night. They have a general store in case you forget something. One of my favorite things about Timber Lake is that they have coffee, donuts, and biscuits and gravy available on Saturday and Sunday mornings for very little money. There are indoor tables and chairs set up if you'd like to eat your breakfast inside while watching the news. For the theatre-lovers among you - Timber Lake Playhouse is just up the driveway. They put on fun/lively musicals and plays with professional actors/directors/etc. I highly recommend this place for tent campers, cabin campers, and RV folks. They popped up in my Google search for places near where we were. The owner was super helpful and was also mindful of making sure our last minute check in was contactless to maintain social distancing. The lake is closed right now due to Covid, but it looks lovely. The campground is clean and well maintained, plus every spot has a nice picnic table and a fire pit. We only needed a one night stop over, but it's now definitely on our list to come back to and spend more time there--especially once everything is able to open back up again. Our 8 year old was sad we had to leave! Thank you for a pleasant stay and a wonderful experience!

Also, you can only stay two weeks per month. In September you can stay three weeks. We are in the area for the months of June and July. We camped with four adults and three preschool aged children and there was plenty for all of us to do. We stayed along the river at a tent site, and had plenty of space. The campgrounds were clean and quiet, and only $16 for the night. With little ones, it was especially great that there are clean, stocked restrooms. We really enjoyed being on the river at our site, but also the easy walk along the bike trail that connects to other parks. Overall, I highly recommend this site for easy, nearby camping.

We rented a camper at Mendota Hills for two nights. Their website listed a few amenities included,…read morebut there were actually more than we expected, like a pasta pot, some kindling wood, a lighter, and other helpful items. The strand of lights strung up over the deck was a nice touch, too. The inside of the camper was clean and well-maintained. Because of COVID-19, there weren't any planned activities like they would usually offer, but we still had a great time exploring the campground (very nicely maintained), boating, and swimming at the lake. Our girls loved the long inflatable waterslide, the large floating slide, and the floating saucers at the lake, and we also enjoyed the kayaks, paddleboat, and rowboat (all free with lifejackets available). There is also a playground where we spent some time in the evenings, with very nice play equipment, a covered pavilion, sand volleyball, and Gaga ball. One of the staff members (Drena) gave us a ride around the campground in her Taxi (longer version of a golf cart decorated like a taxi). She pointed out many places we hadn't seen yet, including the sunflower field and some really nice walking trails. The staff was very helpful whenever we needed anything. We had never rented a camper before, so there were a couple of things we weren't familiar with, and they were very patient with us. All of the other people we met there were also very friendly and welcoming. As we were checking out, one of the owners asked if there was anything they could improve, which was very impressive to me. They truly want campers to have a great experience, and our family certainly did!

The public restrooms are in this building however, and you will have people coming and going during your event. It wasn't too busy today so not a problem. There is plenty of open grassy area to play, didn't get enough wind to be able to fly the kites, but we were close! But we definitely had a lot of room to kick the soccer ball, throw the football and run around. The grill worked great, it's 4 feet long and we were able to cook plenty of burgers and hotdog and such for the family. There's also a couple of electrical outlets so we were able to plug-in a couple crockpots for beans and such. There are quite a few mice living in this facility, so just be aware of that, but you are out in the country! There are many hikes and such that leave from this location so you could use this as homebase with other family members being able to go out and take a great hike as well. We had a great day and I have a feeling this is going to become a tradition PS. Bring the bug spray :)

The only thing preventing me from giving five stars is that, during my last visit last weekend, it was obvious the pit toilets were not being cleaned/maintained well. The wedding was held a bit down the road from the campgrounds in a lovely canyon. VERY beautiful! The reception was held at the lodge and served buffet style. The prime rib was the spotlight. It's a very quaint spot for weddings. The staff was very friendly and accommodating 6 stars to the staff! The day after the wedding, the lodge has a brunch buffet. The food is decent, but it's pretty pricey. I probably would not personally revisit it just based on the price for what you get, but it's understandable since it's the only dining option nearby as far as I could tell. I would love to visit this spot again for hiking and biking. A nice little getaway in the middle of nowhere Illinois.
