I'm an alum of U of M and our group was visiting after many years of being away from the Midwest. We were craving Detroit-style pizza, which is not commonly found in the West coast so that led us to Yelp to find something nearby Ann Arbor. We saw all the rave reviews of Thompson's Pizzeria and just had to try it ourselves....and what a delight it was! This was a no-frills, family-owned restaurant that you could tell prided in its food as well as service. The Detroit-style pizza was stellar and exactly what we were looking for -- saucy, cheesy, doughy but with a crispy crust. We also enjoyed the Blonde Bread - think cheesy bread on crack, loaded with basil and garlic, as well as the Original Thompson's Super Special Pizza. Needless to say, we didn't have any leftovers. Trust me on this - if you're ever in Ann Arbor, take the 15 mile drive to Chelsea and eat at Thompson's. You won't regret it! As for me, I will be thinking about this meal until the next time I return to Michigan, whenever that may be. read more

Have been here several times now. Great sandwiches and burgers. Pizza look very good but haven't tried it yet. Service is very good. Had the roast beef sub. I can whole heartedly say this is by far my the best pizza I have ever had. I don't live super close, but whenever I'm in town visiting friends Thompson's is a must. Their detroit style pizza is beyond amazing, and their cheesy bread is phenomenal as well. Not to mention their ranch is to die for. One time I accidentally forgot my leftovers at a friend's who lives an hour away, and genuinely thought about driving back to go get them lol I've always had great customer service while dining in. WOW that's a lot of salt! Hubby picked up a Cheeseburger pizza and a sausage/mushroom/onion pizza last for carry out. The saltiness was overwhelming as if someone used cups of salt instead of teaspoons. Additionally, it tastes like the burger and the sausage are the same overly salty meat. I kept hearing how great this pizza was, and given the other stellar reviews, I can't decide if I was here on an off night or if I'm just one of the only ones that doesn't like the food here. The fried mushroom appetizer was fantastic and I would highly recommend it to anyone interested. The pizza, which should be the star of the show here, left a lot to be desired. Our flavored crust didn't taste like anything and our pizza had about half the amount of sauce on it that it should have. The sausage was crumbled so small that it was basically like a powder in some areas. We ordered mushrooms on our pizza and were asked if we wanted canned or fresh. We got fresh, and it was almost as if they were thrown on top in the last five minutes of cooking the pizza and basically raw, giving a stark difference and contrast to the rest of the pizza. Again, maybe I was just here on an off night, but I'd pick any other pizza place in town over this one, personally. read more

We have ordered this same pizza for the last 15 years and it has always received a 5 star rating from us. But, this past March we were told about the corned beef pizza, it is only available in March in observance of St. Patrick's day. If I couid give it zero stars I would. I got a 12 inch italian sub carry out and when I got home just a few minutes after picking it up, it was so soggy and italian dressing was soaking thru the paper and the bag it was in. When I took it out of the bag it just fell apart in my hands from being so soaked with oil. They heated it up and the meat tasted so rotten and the lettuce was so slimey that two bites was all I could take and it went right into the trash can. The fries that came with it were coated fries that were cold and tasted like cardboard. I had not been to Thompsons in close to 6 years and one bite of that sub reminded me why. This is the second time we have tried Thompsons after trying to eat here years ago and wound up walking out after 15 minutes of only menus in front of us. This time we made it through a meal but won't bother again. This visit, we were lucky. We arrived and ordered before the rush, at lunch on a Sunday. There was one waitress. When we arrived, we were the fourth table. It was eerily quiet, except for the large table conversation with their fussy children next to us. Cartoons played on all TVs without sound. No music either. It was odd. Like we shouldn't be there, or they weren't actually open yet. We were looking forward to trying out their menu. We ordered the fish sandwich and a Ham and cheese, asking for the american be switched to swiss. I had to try their FAMOUS fried mushrooms, that you can swap out for the fries, for an up charge. The fish came out in two uniform shapes, freshly fried on a wonderfully toasted (greasy) bun. The fish was blah. If I ate only the bun, this review would be better. The mushrooms were not fresh, and completely tasteless. Maybe they were cooked first and it took so long for our food to come out they got soggy sitting back there. No dipping sauce either. The ham sandwich was fine. The fries were better than the sandwich. We waiting 30 mins to get our food. No refills. Had to flag her down to ask for the bill when we were done eating. She was so busy with a full house of tables and the only one on the floor. We watched table after table come in, sit down, and start getting grumpy that they weren't being served, but they all stayed. We were guessing which table would get up and leave while we were waiting for our bill. I guess this is normal. We didn't stick around with only menus in front of us last time. If Sundays 'after-church-crowd' is a busy time, then get more staff. I don't know what the draw is for this place but this is strike two. read more

Thompson's in Chelsea serves up some mighty fine pizza! In the "non wood fired" category I would have to say that this is some of the finest pizza in the Ann Arbor/Dexter/Chelsea area. We especially enjoy their "Detroit Style" pizza which we always order with fresh mushrooms instead of the pepperoni. They also create special and unique pizzas from time to time which we often enjoy as a break from our usual Detroit Style. Ordering for pickup is quick and can be done over the phone or online. When we order for take away the pizzas are always ready when promised. They also have plenty of other "bar food" type items on their menu which don't always lend themselves to take away which is all we have been doing since the pandemic began. I have fond memories of enjoying many different menu items in the days when we used to eat inside but it's the pizza which really stands out at Thompson's. read more

Once upon a time, in the charming little town of Chelsea (the home of Jeff Daniels and Howdy Holmes), there was a lovely pizzeria called Thompson's. A fairy godmother must have founded this establishment in 1970 because it's only improved in the last 54 years. The staff here is attentive, capable and friendly. Guests are always greeted with a smile and almost immediate service, and many of the guests are obviously "locals," a good indicator of quality. The food, all of it, is absolutely delicious - their pizza rivals any in the state and possibly, the whole USA - their beer and cocktail selections are extensive - and, finally, their deep-fried mushrooms are beyond compare. Honestly, we've never, ever had mushrooms as scrumptious as these. Firm and fresh, and individually hand-dipped in homemade batter, there aren't enough superlatives for these little gems. Even though it's some distance from our home, there are two excellent medical clinics in Chelsea, and my husband and I always book our appointments at the clinics around lunch time. As soon as we're done, we make our way to Thompson's and order mushrooms - and more mushrooms. A delightful, scrupulously clean dining room, easy to get to from I-94, and plenty of free parking, Thompson's is a great place to bring your kids, your friends, your workmates, your date, or your grandma. Let me start by saying the service was very good and the place seemed very clean. The problem was that we had heard so many good things about their pizza and we ended up huge disappointed We ordered it with pepperoni, sausage and onion on all and mushrooms on half, this was the driest pizza we have ever eaten ! I just had my parents and my daughter and grandkids at Thompson's Pizzeria and I wanted to share with all of you my experience! We sat down and was waited on right away and then things suddenly turned south! The waitress started to get abit spicy with us when my mother just asked politely to have her coffee warmed up ...then we were never checked on which brought me to ask her for a refill on coffee and her response was "when I get time I have to brew a whole new pot" that did it for me! I got up from my seat and asked to pay for the drinks that we did have and ask my family to leave! (I could of just got up and left the drink bill with her to pay but that wasn't the right thing to do) I tell you all this to say that customer service is so important, and if you don't like serving people, or being in hospitality, then I would suggest another career field. I assure you that we didn't give her any reason to be nasty! We have been there many times in the past and never experienced this but we will NEVER be back!!!
