I've never been treated with such disrespect until I came to this place. The so-called manager of Slabs is the poster child for arrogance with the IQ to match his blue-collar laziness. A few weeks ago, I was quoted a price, only to come back and have it doubled--no explanation, just a blatant attempt to weasel out of doing any real work. It was clear this guy had no interest in lifting a finger to help move pavers. When I asked for his input, he gave me a lazy excuse about the outdoor inventory being "buy as you see." I've now bought building materials from here for two separate projects and hope to not have to return again. For this second project, I went on a weekday at about 4:30 or 4:40pm. They were supposed to be open until 5pm but when I arrived, they were rushing me and at one point, told me they were actually closed (it wasn't 5pm yet). I didn't have a complicated order - just needed one more bag of cement - but was trying to get ahold of my contractor first. Eventually, the sales associate rang me up, charged me, and we loaded up the bag. Then as it was being loaded, the sales associate ran outside to tell me he had charged me the wrong price and that I needed to pay more for the product. Imagine, they didn't want to help me in the first place because they were closing, and then begrudgingly helped me, only to charge me more money for a mistake they made. I want to support local businesses in the community but they just don't have good service here. I wonder if it's because I'm a woman. I ended up taking my business to Load N' Go in Gardena and wow, it is like night and day. We were celebrating my wife's 65th birthday with a party and about 25 friends. As a fun thing to do, we decided to have everyone paint a rock(s) or two. I found this wonderful place on PCH in Lomita. When I told the man I needed about 60 rocks about 3" long and what we needed them for, he graciously said, " Please help yourself, NO CHARGE!! " WOW!! It's great to be treated like a lesser person by a customer service representative who is literally an order taker at a stone company. We have been very disappointed with the lack of communication and disregard for delivery dates. We were originally quoted 2-3 weeks for delivery, and 4 weeks later we still have no materials. I came in to order thousands of dollars of stack stone, so I ordered a sample of what we were looking for. (Which they charged me for!) I had to call them twice to find out the status of the sample and they eventually told me that "someone must have thrown it (the order) away". Of course they did. This site is the brick and block place for Thompson's, which sells natural stone down the road a bit. If you are building or paving with brick or concrete blocks, or are looking for bulk sand, gravel or cement, this should be your first and only stop. This is like the building materials section of Home Depot or Lowe's pumped up on steroids -- everything they have, plus much more -- and they deliver at a most reasonable price. (I had some 20 tons dropped off in my driveway for $50). This place can get pretty busy in the mornings as the contractors load up for the day. For the individual homeowner, better late morning or early afternoon if you want to avoid the crowds and get some service. read more

WOW, watch out for this place if you don't send a knowledgeable contractor to buy your material. We had our gardener install some Arizona flagstone in place of our lawn in the back, and so we took our own measurements and went into this place. We're pretty sure that our square footage calculations were correct. From our square footage they told us to buy way more rock than we needed, resulting in not only restocking fees, but also another delivery charge to have it returned. We still have some left over as you can't return partial pallets! Bottom line, DO NOT trust these guys to calculate how much material you need. I think they deliberately miscalculate. read more

I'd never been in Thompson's building supply before. I was amazed at the variety of materials I could see from the parking lot and at the tools in the shop in the office area. I needed some simple cinder blocks to serve as plant risers. The woman at the desk was not as helpful as she might have been, she asked what size (I had visited the website earlier to see what my choices were, there was no information) and I had no idea, she named a couple sizes, I could not visualize and she did not produce a measure or offer to have someone show me, as I dithered she looked irritable, I gestured (about like this?) and she wrote up the order. She told me to drive to the "top" of the yard (and where would that be?). The "top" of the yard was blocked by big trucks, the guys in the yard waved me around to the side (I think that is what they meant, arms waving in a circular manner), dodging fork lifts busily loading and moving materials around the yard. Parked in the yard I see building blocks in an amazing variety of colors, shapes and sizes. If there was a possibility of seeing this selection before purchasing, I did not know the magic words to attain that. I asked the guy who came to help me about sizes and colors, there were, it seems, a few. Do they come in that color? Yes but they are more expensive. How much more expensive? More expensive (knowing nodding). Workers were stopped around us watching, clearly I was blocking the way and I needed to get loaded and get out... He brings the blocks, they are a lot larger than my hand measurement to miss-don't-bother-me-with-a-small-order. They will not all fit in the car. I take half the order and decide to not block the driveway while I walk back the less than helpful office staff (through the busy fork lifts and big trucks) or pull out, drive around the block and pull back in for the small refund. I should have asked to see the blocks, brought my own measuring tape, asked to see the colors, asked about the prices of the various colors... but it never occurred to me to have to be so proactive. I suppose I am used to Home Depot where you walk up and see the materials and decide. Thompson's does not look like it is set up for customers to wander around and view the materials. The blocks I purchased worked well enough, though one of them came with a big aggressive black spider. I have other projects in mind and will look for a supplier who will help me with my choices as I move on to the more expensive and extensive materials. read more

I would rate them ZERO STAR if I could! I purchased a huge amount of weed block fabric for my children's play yard which cost a lot. I even prep the dirt and sprayed it with weed killer to make sure no more weeds grow back. A few months after installation, weeds started to grow up from the fabric. Not just a few weeds here and there, but a lot. I called Thompson Building to let them know that the product they sold me was not a good quality and that it's not doing what it supposed to do, block weeds from growing. The person I talked to said that the fabric is not guaranty to block weeds. I said, "then why did I even spend too much money on something that will not work?" He just told me that he's sorry, it's not guaranteed that it will block weeds and just left it at that. Same situation happened to a friend of mine but she purchased her weed block fabric from Lowes. She told Lowes her situation which was similar to mine. Lowes told her to bring it back, even though it was already used. Lowes gave her money back with no arguement. GO TO LOWES INSTEAD! On two separate occasions, my wife and I discussed our needs with two different associates (Victor, Salvador) and both interactions were excellent. The customer service that we received was A+. I have read the many reviews commenting on the poor customer service, but our experience was the exact opposite. Both associates very friendly and helpful. They answered any questions we had and provided their input and recommendations. Thompson's prices were also much lower than many of their competitors in the area. They also have a many examples of the stones which really helps when making the decision. In the end, we ordered our stone and it was delivered on time. Why would a business close before people get off at work at 5 o'clock????? I leave work early to get there and gates are shut at 5 on the dot. I guess the business is more for contractors and not do it yourself guys. This is also due to the other yard for stone having employees that see to only want to take your order and help a homeowner through the design process and spend time on educating customers. So in short get there before you go to work for the day and know exactly what you want. Hopefully hours get extended soon to increase their business. read more
