You may need to ask for help, as many people come in and out some contractors who already know what they want, but a large amount of general public too - for this reason you may need to ask for assistance and the support representatives know that many people are there just to look or already know what they want. We've used this location for a few home projects and appreciate the assortment and variety they have to offer. The showroom is massive, one of the largest we have found and provides great examples of pavers and stone options. Would recommend stopping in if you have a home reno project. read more

Make sure you ask how much it is to deliver before you pay, because they did not specify and I failed to ask. Delivery is three times the amount of the 300pds of stones that we purchased! Stones came to $63.00; the delivery charge was $174.00. That was on me, I didn't even question the cost to deliver but was shocked when I did check. Better to make a few trips in your own vehicle, gas will be cheaper than their deliver charge. read more

Two employees were on their personal phones, deep in conversation, while other employees were hanging outside. Even though we walked by them a few times, nobody looked up, no hi, no help. Pretty confusing at first to figure out which Thompson to go to and for what. But we eventually figured it out, learning that this location is basically a showroom. And we made plenty of trips to both for many home projects from that point forward. There are plenty of designs and styles to choose from, offering great products and ideas to peruse. The staff at this design location is very helpful and available to talk to and get opinions and ideas. We were at a loss of what we wanted to do in our courtyard and everyone we spoke with seemed eager to help and brainstormed with us. We returned for a couple more projects and found this to be the same each and every time. Pricing is great! And took hardly any time to get what we needed. Keep in mind you have to actually order and pay for your items at the other location, so that's where it got slightly confusing. I spent 25 minutes walking all around the showroom and outside looking at stones and pavers. During this time, there were approximately 6 employees walking around or standing around the front area. There was only one other customer in the outside area. Not one employee greeted me or made eye contact. A couple employees even walked right by me and didn't ask if I needed help or acknowledge me. I left given their horrible customer service. As I walked out I commented that their customer service was terrible and one employee sarcastically said "I know" under his breath. I'm looking to remodel my back yard. I will never give them my business. read more

We came here this past summer as we were doing a backyard renovation and needed to pick out some good looking pavers. We enjoyed being a customer at Thompson Building because it was clean, customer service was helpful (shout out to JAKE) and inside had AC (which is super important in the hot days of the summer and you need a place to just collect your thoughts and talk through options). You can order samples with their store down the street which you will need to pick up. We ended up going with concrete pavers that are located outside, not the best system of... circling the pavers on a sheet, getting price checked for each circled one. Wouldn't it be nice if they just had a barcode on each paver sample and you can just use your clicker to add it to your cart or estimate so you can see in Realtime how much it is instead of circling trying to figure out if this is the paver you want to get an estimate for, waiting in line to get estimates and then etc... Easily spent 2 -3 hours here. If they can improve that system customers would feel more self sufficient, its faster response time and so many more benefits! read more

Their showroom offers so many options to look at and give ideas on what you can do with different materials in your home and yard. I am a landscape designer in the area and I always recommend that my clients come here to get a feel for how a material will look and feel once it is installed in their yard. The staff that works there is knowledgeable and friendly and can help you look at different options for what might work well in your space. I've been a customer of Thompson Building Materials for about 15 years. It's a great place to buy and compare prices on professional, contractor grade items. The Orange location has two parts - the "Design Center" and for lack of a better term the "yard style location". Even though the address of the design center faces Case St. - it's on the corner of Taft - about a block separates the two - at times you'll need to stop into both places to complete your transaction. The design center is homeowner/customer oriented; customer service people ask if they could help you. The yard location has a counter and is more of a contractor "pro shop" - no one is gonna ask if they can help you until you "step up" to the counter and say hello. Design center is a great place to view displays of stone and brick veneer. It is where you get prices and place your order. They have several items in stock - there is a "yard" out back to load your truck. The "yard" has more outdoor displays, including real and fake boulders, fountains, statues, BBQ islands, and a small indoor store with tools and supplies. They have block, rock, gravel, sand etc. with delivery available. It's a good place to get professional quality sealers, etc. in large quantities. My landscape contractor referred me to this place to decide which stones/pebbles I should choose for my garden. The selection was good and they even gave some take-home sample bags of the pebbles I was deliberating on to help make my decision. I was extremely satisfied with their fast service and delivery when it came to pass that we didn't order enough and they brought 2000 lbs of pebbles to us on the SAME DAY that we ordered. They were helpful in selection of the material, but charge $12 per pallet and only give you $9 if it's returned. Further, our contractor tried to return the pallet on our behalf and they said without the original credit card they couldn't refund the money even though he had the receipt! We came here right when they opened on a Sunday morning so it was pretty empty. We came to see some pavers in person and I appreciated how they had all their pavers numerically installed on the floor. All we had to do was grab a sheet (that you're allowed to keep) and look up the corresponding number to see the brand, color, and name. An associate that helped us was very helpful in ordering us 2 different samples. We were basically trying to decide between 2 colors and I was expecting a tiny sample but was pleasantly surprised to see that they actually gave us 3 pieces of each color so we could get a much better idea of what the final outcome would be. The worst customer service I have ever seen in 28yrs of Contracting. They hold you hostage. The yards are unorganized and there payment system is a joke. They make you wait in a 30min line for your paperwork so you can pick up materials 1 block away at there stoneyard. Wasted 1hr trying to pick up 1 wall cap we were short on a job. Ah, once again the simple lost art of customer service. Went to the design center on a Saturday morning with the wife carrying measuring tape, a picture of the stone siding we were trying to match, and a notepad. One would think these are obvious signs of people at least moderately interested in either designing a project or purchasing building materials. I'm not one to play the race card, but I definitely got the feeling that if you're not Caucasian then somehow you're not given the time of day. No one from the sales team bothered greeting, asking, or inquiring with us. Two of them just stood by the cash register playing with their smartphone. The same two salesmen greeted other customers who were already working with a sales person. I'm not expecting to be groveled to, but at least have a decent amount of respect for customers that enter through the door. This is the 21st century and the whole "white is right" attitude needs to go. read more

So I asked a question on Yelp for help with recommendations on where in OC to buy rock/gravel, sand, flagstone, etc. The lower IQ'ed but highly skilled comics in Yelp-land provided the "profound" suggestions as to where I should "get" these material. Note I asked where to "buy", not "gather or steal". Thus the answers back were: -- "dude, at a forest" -- "at the beach" LOL, it was good for a laugh. Seriously, I received several good recommendations from non-Yelpers unfortunately. The best place I visited was Thompson Bldg Material. They have an awesome design center at this location (they have several locations but this is the only design center). And the prices were very reasonable (based on comparison). Turns out Thompson supplies many of the other local building material businesses. As an example, their delivery price is $40. Most places charge from $75-$250 "because of the folklift". The staff was super knowledgeable. Going to Thompson's is more like a good event to attend rather than the work of shopping. It was actually fun to look at all the different material which were set as if they would be at your house, not just loose piles of....well, rock. read more

The prices and the quality of product is a (5), there customer service is a (2). The easy to purchase is a (1)... You have to go back and forth to various buildings (not in walking distance) to look & then order, then drive to another building to pay and then drive back to the first building to pick-up. Most of the Staff in the design center are not friendly. The staff who loads your stuff is great. We have purchased thousands of dollars of product and while I'm sure that's not a ton of money for them- it was for us and having to determine our look for the house and redoing of our yard landscape alone was disappointing. Don't come here for design help. Come here for supplies and don't have high expectations for great or stellar service. read more

We bought some large lava rocks for our fire pit. Pretty cool place with so many different types of rocks and hardscape material to choose from.
