I had two fillings done elsewhere (Marin Community Clinic), and unfortunately they were done so poorly that they made things worse and even left me being told I "needed a root canal." After months of dealing with pain and searching for real answers, I found Dr. Varin -- and I'm so grateful I did. He immediately identified the actual issue: the fillings just needed to be completely redone. He took his time, paid attention to detail, and made sure I was comfortable throughout the entire process (I literally almost fell asleep during the appointment!). The difference in care and precision was incredible. The office manager is also amazing -- so kind, organized, and helpful every step of the way. In the ever changing world of insurance and my previous dentist retiring I found Dr. Varin about two years ago. So glad I did. I have spent a lot of time in his office this year. Francisca in the front office is Amazing so are both Linda's. I had a thorough investigation of my mouth to determine why a lump was developing near my molars. Dr. Varin and his team accessed and had the equipment to confirm the issue and it was time for a root canal. As said in other reviews Dr Varin is top notch. I was in the chair and as comfortable as possible and the whole thing was done in three hours. I did not have to go back! Yay! That's precision and having high tech equipment to see inside my tooth. The fluid causing the lump is gone and everything is back to normal. He is also a really nice guy too. I highly recommend him and his team. read more

I had an urgent dental concern and my regular dentist isn't open on Saturdays so I was referred to Thomas Varin by my dental insurance provider. They got me an appointment the same day! Everyone here was super friendly and patient, and Dr. Varin was compassionate and knowledgeable. He addressed my specific concern with a thorough but gentle exam that included a cool high-tech laser thingy, and let me know what my next steps should be. I dread anything related to medical or dental but Dr. Varin was pleasant and I might actually end up switching from my regular dentist just because of how literally painless my experience today was. read more

Dr VARIN has 3D X-rays to determine that my abscess related to a supposed root canal that had failed was actually due to a 3rd root that could not be seen using normal technology. I had a huge abscess in my gum that a previous dentist referred Me out of her office for. I did have to have my tooth pulled and now am getting a bridge. The other dentist is charging me for a crown i cannot use. He cleaned up a filling the other dentist left and repaired a tooth the other dentist said had to be pulled. I am very happy with his work! I feel his prices are reasonable an I feel so much better! read more

Would rate this place with negative stars if I could. My family goes to this dental office and we have been mistreated on numerous occasions due to the incompetence and ignorance of their staff. My mother was charged nearly a thousand dollars for a deep cleaning, when told it would be covered by insurance!!! It was the office's job to make sure it could be covered for the calendar year and they failed to do that. Doesn't show up in your computer? Well all it takes is a call. Yet they didn't do that, and WE paid for it. They mistreated my mother on several occasions, forcing her to do treatments she clearly opposed, and then charging her for them when they said they would be fully covered by insurance. Dr Varin's office is wonderful! The receptionist, Francisca, is a very sweet woman who cares about who and how you are, and the entire staff is dedicated to your comfort and well-being. The office itself is comfortable and beautifully decorated with touches of Dr. Varin's personality and life. The equipment used is state-of-the-art; I hadn't been to a dentist in 8 years, and was amazed to see my x-rays manipulated on screen in front of me as the technician and later Dr. Varin himself showed me what they found and explained the decision-making process regarding how to treat me. I needed several old fillings replaced, and went back for a second visit to do so. He had some trouble making my gums go numb in one spot (out of four) and ended up sticking me with a needle 8 times (good thing they don't terrify me anymore), but it finally worked, and everything turned out well. They offer various payment plans, and even offer a discount for paying with cash or check (which I did). I highly recommend Dr. Varin for your dental needs, and will be going back to him for my next cleaning. read more

Ive had a number of dentists over the last 10 years and Dr. Varin is the best, here is why: 1. He knows his stuff. Every time he has done a review of my mouth he is spot on. He identifies the problems and tries to get them ahead of time. When I went back, after being out of town for a while, the problem spots that I had then were the ones that I needed work on. 2. Every piece of work he has done on my mouth has lasted, not so with other dentists. 3. Him and his staff worked with me to identify the problem spots and the most important issues and work within my budget to get each of them on a schedule. 4. Friendly staff! 5. I have been to a few Dentists in my 51 years and I gotta say, Thomas Varin is THE BEST! I've had teeth pulled there and I have not needed more than Ibuprofen for a 12 hour period afterward. I can't say enough about Doc. Varin. All I know is, I did nt have to miss ANY work after getting a tooth pulled and I'm a big Baby and His work has been painless! I just can not say enough about this guy. WONDERFUL staff, and GREAT, GREAT, GREAT! Dental Care. He even let me pay by installments!!! I've been going to Dr. Varin for over 25 years. His dental work is flawless, the staff is attentive and caring (especially Francisca!) and he has always provided me with options when I've needed to have significant dental work. There was a period of time when my dental insurance was not accepted by Dr. Varin and I chose to see another dentist. Cleaning appointments were impersonal and rushed. When needing a root canal my insurance replacement dentist could not finish the procedure. I give him credit for stopping and sending me to another dentist to finish the job instead of risking doing damage. Ultimately I decided to return to Dr. Varin and pay out of pocket in order to get professional care and have never regretted the decision. I have been going to Dr. Varin since the late 70's so have seen him many times over the years. I highly recommend him. He always explains what the problem is , options for treating it & why, patiently answers any questions I have (I always have questions) & then picks the most reasonable cost effective choice. He is highly skilled & has great respect for tissue with a gentile touch which aids in healing as well as less discomfort during the procedure. Once I had an emergency & he even returned my call during a break while he was at a dental conference. I know he has worked very hard to keep his prices down even when his costs are going up. His staff of Linda ,Dental Assistant & Francisca at the front Desk are friendly, efficient & go out of their way to make your visit as pleasant as possible. I really don't like going to the dentist but if I need to go I,m glad I have Dr. Varin & his staff. read more

I normally have a very definite dislike for dentists. Not this time around. Tom Varin is THE MAN. Not only is he an exceptional dentists, he is also a really nice guy. I could not recommend him with any more enthusiasm. I am in the middle of getting dentures. This is not normally a very pleasant situation, but he is making it something that is not the end of the world. If you are typically terrified of the dentists, this is the guy for you. read more

I went to Dr Varin for roughly 8 years. Yes his office is the typical dental office with caring staff. The decorations are fine. The equipment is typical for most dentists these days. Dr Varin kept me waiting typically 45 minutes for every appointment and even when I would book a first appt of the day, he would arrive to work a half hour late, not once but twice. That said, he charges you for every thing imaginable so if you don't have a big insurance coverage, you will be spending a lot out of pocket. He even charged my insurance 90 dollars for a valium pill and called it conscious sedation. I can get a full prescription for 5 dollars at my pharmacy. He would charge for a 15 minute exam when simply doing a cursory look at you teeth after each cleaning. I was talked into a night guard, just a little ball of plastic the size of a quarter molded for my two front teeth, took 45 minutes in office and charged 500 dollars. I was told by other dentists not to wear this terrible device as the night guard should be full mouth and fitted to all your teeth. Now I had to pay out of pocket for the second one because my insurance only covers once every 5 years for that. He redid all my crowns and each one has failed in succession in less than 5 years. One was a root canal that had to be pulled out and he tried to put a graft in which was not done properly and didn't take. Now I can't get an implant for that large molar because the bone graft didn't take. Another was drilled too close to the root so I had to have another root canal. Another one is failing as I write this note. He typically had a hard time getting me numb, having to stick me many times with the needle. I'm a dental hygienist who had a dental emergency involving the bridge on my two front teeth and a leg of lamb. Dr. Varin came in on his day off to miraculously put my teeth back together. Only an expert who can understand the physical forces of your bite would have been able to repair my fiasco of a broken bridge. Dr. Varin was able to figure out a way to bond my teeth together so my smile was still fabulous, I could still speak clearly, and I could still eat the foods I enjoy. After going to Dr Varin's office for years I can say I had nothing but bad experiences. Wait times were always at least an hour. The staff would always make excuses, saying he had an emergency or something of the sort. Twice I made first appt of the day and the doc would show up to the office a half hour late each time. I guess the emergency was simply his non consideration for his patient's time. He charges for every little thing, and as much as he can squeeze out of you or your insurance. He redid all my Amalgam fillings and numerous crowns. They have never stopped hurting since he worked on them. The crowns he did have all failed. He cost me thousands of dollars out of pocked over and above what my insurance covered and now due to his bad dentistry, I am having to redo all the work he did at a new dentist's office so basically he is costing me double. I have read the negative reviews here, and at times questioned my own decision to go to Dr. Varin in light of them. But, I have been going to him for several years now, and today clearly told me why. My needs so far have been simple: regular cleanings, an occasional filling. I often was frustrated because my appointments often started late and I often would have to wait after a cleaning for Dr. Varin to free up to do his check up on me. I even questioned once a recommendation to do fillings that I did not believe were necessary. But, today, I had a real dental emergency, a popped crown and a broken tooth. I was fit into his schedule promptly, the staff was great, Dr. Varin was fabulous, and I finally, and suddenly, realized why the previous waits are no big deal in the big picture. Today, he talked to me in detail about my options for treatment, and Dr. Varin fully -- and respectfully -- included me in the discussion, kept me fully apprised as he worked, and made me feel truly a part of the process. His work was careful, and he spent the time with me that he needed to do the job thoroughly and right, even to the point of needing to reschedule another patient when our time ran over. Yes, I felt for that person, and have been in her shoes before, but I truly appreciated that he did not rush my treatment to accommodate a simple check-up. There is a sign posted in his office that states clearly that appointments can run late, and now I understand why. Dr. Varin gives personalized treatment that is all too rare anymore in our rushed society. The office feels old-fashioned in the best sense of the word, and Dr. Varin's professionalism and care is, too. If you want a dentist who watches the clock and gets through his schedule in a tight and orderly manner, then go elsewhere. If you want a dentist who commits his full attention to you during your treatment, then come here. And, his caring staff is not "usual"; they are stellar. I have been in plenty of dental and doctor offices where you are treated like an insurance payment. Not here. They do their best to make you feel at home, by their manner, and even by the décor; it is a really comfortable place to be when you have to be at the dentist's. No longer will I be impatient because my check-up is running a little late; I'll factor that into my appointment, enjoy the time to read, and hope that someone else is getting the attention they deserve for a far more important treatment than my regular check up.
