Consistently poor service and quality control. I love the idea of thistle but they are so shady. They consistently leave items out of my orders, have tiny portions, poorly packed meals that are delivered all thrashed about. They are incredibly expensive and repetitive. I was so impressed at first but I'm realizing how their promises are consistently broken. When they fail to deliver an item, their agents vaguely say they will "credit that amount" to your account. They don't explicitly say the number they will add back and I have not seen that amount subtracted from my next orders. It seems each week they mess something up. Even their delivery people have sent me rude text messages. They use thermoform plastic containers with no real plan to change that and pretend to care about sustainability. I have asked them on several occasions which recycling companies accept their containers and they have failed to inform me of a recycler that will. I'm devastated by how much plastic they use each week. If you bring it up to them, they just give you some nonsensical PR script about how eating plant based reduces carbon emissions. As someone with a university degree in sustainability, I cannot express how disappointing that is. The plastic is sharp and has cut my several times. I really enjoyed their meals, and I liked the variety and the flavor. The reason why I'm giving it two stars is because of the delivery. I started ordering weekly from them in January, and I had had consistently missed deliveries. The problem has just been escalating and not improving. It's been so bad that I've had 2 weeks of missed deliveries that I went ahead and canceled my account today. Their inconsistent delivery defeats the purpose of having a plan with them and relying on their meals for the week. I'm leaving this review because I'm hoping someone can address this issue because there's a lot of potential for this business, yet the customer service just gives me generic responses. I'm a huge fan of Thistle. The food is tasty, fresh, and varied. I feel like I'm finally able to eat as healthily as I want to. I ate pretty healthy food before, but I wasn't getting the variety that's optimal. It feels like I have a personal chef with Thistle. I've found the customer service to be excellent. When I've had an issue come up (a rare occurrence), staff have been kind and helpful. I'd love for the food containers to be reusable, not just recyclable, but that's tough to do logistically. I tried Thistle for about 3 months and enjoyed the food for the most part. It was very fresh, packed with veggies and had some great flavors. Not every meal was great but that's expected. My gut health overall seemed to improve quite a bit. The bad is the delivery. As another review said, they consistently didn't deliver meals almost every single time. I would have over half my order missing every time. Customer service was responsive and gave me credits but it left me without meals and very frustrated. Secondly, the meals are quite expensive when you get a meat based protein and often include probably 3oz or so of meat. Way to little for the surcharge. I've been a thistle customer for like 6 months. As a new breast feeding mom it's just been necessary for me from a time/nutrition perspective. But the service has been absolutely atrocious. The deliveries are late/early left somewhere erroneous at least 1/4 or the time. The orders are wrong as often as not. I've never left a yelp review before. I started just so I could find some way to scream into the void about how bad it is because the customer service ppl just do not care. I fantasize about when my baby is weaned and I can cancel the shit out of this service. It's really a shame because the food is good. But I am so sick of being angry when I'm up at 11:45 at night with a sick baby, receiving a delivery that was left somewhere random, smelling like cigarette smoke and with 3 snacks instead of 3 breakfasts. BUT, their delivery service however is HORRIBLE and so consistently unreliable. Correct me if I am wrong but most people sign up for a meal service because they don't have the time to buy groceries and cook healthy meals for themselves, right!? I don't buy groceries because I rely on Thistle for 2 meals a day M-F. Well.. you will be left without any food to eat if you sign up with Thistle because they have such a hard time delivering meals on time or even at all. Only about 40% of my orders have come within the delivery window I have selected. A couple times they will say the delivery is late but on its way, then I receive a text message WITHIN THE SAME MINUTE letting me know my order is cancelled because they could not deliver (see attached photo and keep in mind that my delivery window is 6am-8am and their first text to me regarding my delivery was at 12:56pm). I have also experienced issues where they just leave my order sitting out on the sidewalk in front of my apt gate instead of trying to buzz in to deliver it in front my apt door.. I live in SF where there is a high chance of the order being stolen from outside of my building. There are plenty of reviews that state the same things I am complaining about and they still haven't gotten it figured out yet. What is the point of eating vegan with this much waste? Single use plastic packaging for every item and an ice pack for each delivery which they will not re-use! The salads were fine. Definitely healthy but not the best quality ingredients- tasteless blueberries, undercooked beans. I would pay up to $10 for one of the vegan salads, not $14-15 as they are priced. I was thinking of using this service for busy work from home weeks, but disappointed with the quality of ingredients and the waste involved. So I emailed customer service, and they said the offer expired on Dec 7th, so basically, their marketing team messed up. They said I'd get $100 over 4 weeks even after acknowledging they messed up. I canceled my order immediately. I can't believe this company's founders are Indians. Stop taking orders and get your act together. Update: 2 Hrs after I wrote the above review, the same customer service rep gave me a call, and as soon as he mentioned this Yelp review. I told him, "You already lost me; never contact me again." I don't care what you have to say now. But, if you can't honor your offers after admitting you messed up, then you deserve to lose customers. I have been a Thistle customer on & off since 2017. During the pandemic, I really kicked up my orders and used Thistle for many months at a time, taking small breaks in between. I'm going to outline some learnings, pros and cons to paint a full picture. Learnings: - Pre-packaged food delivery services aren't for everyone. And the need for services like this (at least for me) comes in waves. There are times in your life where you may want to use a service like Thistle, and other times where it won't be worth it or as useful. Lean on services like Thistle when you could use some extra help in life. I've primarily leaned on Thistle when I've had an insane work schedule and less time to cook or I'm going through a tough time or struggling with depression and the thought of grocery shopping and cooking sounds like too much. - Try different items and figure out what's worth it to you. To me, the breakfast items are not worth it -- I prefer simple breakfasts I can make at home for way less. Sometimes the lunches are worth it, sometimes not. In my opinion, Thistle's main value prop lies in the easy to prep dinners. The juices and snacks are pretty great too. - Be home during your delivery if possible, and be very clear with instructions. Complain immediately if there are delivery issues. - Take breaks from consistently using this service. The meals start to repeat and feel old and boring after a while. Plus, your pocket can use the break. I've been mostly lucky, but a few instances have occurred (stolen food, didn't show up, etc.) - There is some room for improvement on the website / app in terms of selecting your upcoming meals -- I feel like the interface could be more intuitive / easier to bulk adjust - 10% of the meals are unimaginative, boring, or just plain gross - They use a lot of rice -- this sometimes gets boring - Some of the salads with quinoa, lentils, and over-vinegary dressings are really not good - I've had a few instances where the packaging was messed up and an item was leaking or looked like it had popped open during delivery -- not good Overall, I think Thistle is a great company with delicious food. These meals have helped me through some tough times. Thistle doesn't have their logistics figured out. Worse, they don't have problem solving or giving a poop about customers figured out. So when you sign up with Thistle, get ready to make their problems your problem. I have filed a complaint with the BBB. Weeks back, the drivers stopped retrieving their bags and ice packs when they dropped off new ones. I alerted the business, they did nothing, nothing changed. As the pile of bags on my porch grew, I sent a strongly-worded warning that I'd have to cancel if they can't pick up their bags. I received a reply from a nice CS agent, the first of several over a few weeks. Oh, what a correspondence we had! There were several promises to pick up that weren't met. I canceled the service for fear of increasing the pile of bags even further and finally asked to hear from a supervisor. Seven days later, he let me know that they only pick up bags from current customers. Even though the only reason I'm not a current customer is that they don't pick up their bags. The food is good. Lots of lentils and beans which isn't a realistic lunch every day, but I'd still be with them if they'd solve their problems. Make no mistake, though: THEY CAN'T. I'm on day 2 and could not be happier. The random things I ate for lunch before....did not leave me feeling great. The time I save in food shopping, food preparing definitely makes the price worth it. Super yummy, flavorful, and healthy meals. We stick to dinners mostly, although sometimes I'll get one of the "lunch" salads and just eat that for dinner. Deliveries have all been on time and accurate. We love Thistle! My only piece of feedback would be that I'd like the portion sizes to be a bit bigger, more consistently. I first signed up for 3 meals a day, 5 days a week, when my first order arrived it didn't include breakfast, I then checked my account and saw I wasn't charged for breakfast even though my order confirmation lists all three meals. I ignored that because often I skip breakfast anyways and if I wasn't charged then whatever. The food was decent but it felt like I just got the same thing over and over again (with minor substitutions such as type of bean or type of dressing) which was a little disappointing because the Instagram page shows such diversity in meal options. For the second week my delivery was skipped Sunday and then again on Monday even though my partners was delivered (to the same address.) apparently re-delivery's are not possible so I just had to cancel my account. This is the healthiest I've eaten in my life! The meals are great, the deliveries are on-time, and occasionally they run out of stuff I've ordered but really all that matters is that I'm eating SO well. Like many of us, I'm short on time; I'm also allergic to completely raw fruits and veggies so I buy salads and then microwave them for 1.5 mins; most of them are meant to be eaten raw or heated and even if not, they still taste great warm. I would give Thistle 5 starts for the meals themselves. However this is a review of my entire experience of Thistle. Unfortunately Thistle was only able to deliver my order on time and without issue roughly 50% of the time. I signed up for breakfast and lunch 5x per week. I am mostly on the road for work. Having a reliable vegan option to eat on the go is essential. My first weekly delivery is supposed to arrive Sunday night between 7 and 10pm. This week the order did not arrive at all and there was no communication until the following day. Thistle did send me an email explaining there was an issue with the delivery, and they did give me a full refund. However, Thistle did not solve my problem, as I never received the shipment. Had I known ahead of time I could have gone grocery shopping or come up with a backup plan. Today food came late which got my hopes up until I opened the bag to see smashed containers, lids not secured, and sauces and food all over the bag which was leaking on my front porch. I tried Thistle using a BlackBoard Eats deal and got three lunches delivered for about $20. The service itself is great. The website is easy to use, they list all the ingredients and nutritional information for every meal for the current and next week so you can see what you are getting, and the delivery is seamless and easy. Cancelling or suspending is also hassle free, which I really appreciate. The reason I can only give it 3 stars is that the lunches were pretty bland. I tried three different lunches and wouldn't buy any of them again. Day 1 - Hearty Sweet Potato Cauliflower Bowl with Ground Turkey. Day 2 - Asian Greens with Braised Turnip Bok Choy and Ginger Chicken. Day 3 - Root Vegetable Platter with Chicken Sausage. Each day was better than the last in terms of flavor, but I still honestly prefer the salads from Trader Joes to any of these (cheaper and less calories too). I know that the ingredients are organic / healthy / dairy free / gluten free and for "diet" food this is probably comparable in terms of flavor, but for 450-550 calories, you can do a lot better. And without the discount it would have cost $43.50 for three lunches... yikes.. read more

What could be improved : It's gluten free but that again makes it very limiting The ingredient combinations were weird at times. I am an Indian vegetarian who eats all kinds of vegetarian food. The food is delicious. Until they try to kill you. I order the vegan meals. So beans are a significant part of at least half the meals I receive. But fairly consistently--like one out of every 5 meals--the beans are not properly cooked. This isnt' just a matter of taste.There are many beans that are literally poisonous when not fully cooked. As somebody who eats/cooks beans alot, I could tell immediately and stopped eating them. I shudder at someone who is using Thistle to transition to a more plant-based diet and who doesn't know that an unfamiliar bean should not be crunchy and hard. If you have a court tester who will make sure the meals are not poisonous before you eat them AND if you have the money to throw out 20% of the food you pay for, then give it a go. I really feel my best without gluten and dairy, my husband not so much. We actually really love to cook (and go out to restaurants) but struggle to find the time, so we end up eating quick unhealthy things when we're too exhausted. We decided to give thistle a try to get healthy habits going again and we're both very impressed. The food is ridiculously good, super fresh and super gourmet. The food is great but the delivery is completely unreliable. The drivers come whenever they want and seem to drop off the food wherever they want somewhere in our building. When the customer service people had things redelivered the delivery was late and then there was a meal missing and another meal was the wrong one. Today the delivery came 1 1/2 hours too early in the early morning and the bag was dumped in front of our big high-rise building and it was open. The first lunch, I found a hair in my food. Medium length and curly, definitely not mine. I was able to get a refund and they offered me extra credits on my account. The dinner I had last night featured "pasta" that tasted undercooked and crumbly. complained about this again and was told that quinoa pasta was more crumbly - fine. They credited my account but I told them to take it back because that's what the food was supposed to taste. Not a huge deal. The lunch I had today had hemp hearts in it. Seriously? I have been using Thistle for awhile now and have been really happy. The food is delicious and unique and they often use ingredients that are organic. They also use ingredients I have never had or don't typically like to prepare at home which is nice - gigante beans, fennel, leeks . . . Last week one of the dishes was a salad with vegan ranch dressing, the dressing was so good I want the recipe. As other reviewers said there are a lot of salads which I love. Typically the lunch is a salad and dinner is something you heat - chili, stews, ramen bowls, lots of variety. I also love that many of their vegan dishes have beans and nuts, I think I have only had two dishes with tofu. Delivery is easy but my experience was delivery is very early - between 4am and 5am. If you have to let the driver in your building that would be a problem. I would have them leave it in front of my door and the food was fine by the time I woke up, the bags are insulated and have two big ice packs. I have chatted customer service a few times with questions and they are always really responsive. It is also easy to stop service or update your plan - you have to let them know by Saturday at 10am if you don't want delivery the following week. read more

I really enjoy Thistle! It's fun to get random, super healthy, fresh dinners that only need to be heated up in a frying pan for a few minutes. Each week, it's fun to choose what meals you want on their website. Luckily, I really enjoy bean/legumes. They are a main staple of a vegan diet and are quite filling. There are not a ton of vegan protein alternatives so if you opt for the vegan meals, they will often include a variety of bean types and lentils (but also things like tofu, pea protein, seeds/nuts and rice). And, the sauces! WOW, I've never had such flavorful sauces that accompany the meals perfectly. They should bottle some of them and sell them separately as they would make any bland dinner quite interesting. I'd dump them over steamed broccoli any day :) I usually only order Thistle dinners, sometimes I order multiple dinners to also eat for lunch. Thistle's lunch offerings are exclusively hearty salads but I have a larger appetite so the dinners for lunch are my jam. However, the lunch and dinners have about the same calorie content. I live in San Francisco and I've never had a delivery problem. They've always just buzzed my apartment within the timeframe I selected and I buzz them in to drop my food in the lobby. Sometimes they don't take the bags back from my previous order but they eventually grab them. I am not vegan but I strive to be clever about what I eat and not always opt for animal-based meals. Thistle has given me some great ideas of actually delicious meal alternatives I could try to re-create that are not the usual American dinner of a meat, starch and vegetable. I highly recommend trying for even a month if you are trying to trying to eat less meat just for the inspiration. This is the way I always wanted to eat, but never had the time, ingredients, and imagination to make it. I would give it 4.5 stars if I could. The only cons are the price: the breakfasts are too expensive so I no longer buy those. It isn't much cheaper than going to a restaurant. Otherwise, no issues with delivery or spoilage.
