We were staying in Philomath for a conference at OSU and were craving some Thai food. The woodsman offers both Thai and American fair in a bar setting. We opted for takeout but the also offer dine in options. The food was quickly made. The quality of the food was ok - the curry was definitely my favorite, the other dishes lacked overall flavor and maybe overcooked on the noodles? I also wished they provided adequate rice for the curry. Definitely order a second rice side to bring home because we only got a very small container compared to the curry we got (see picture). Overall the convenience of not having to drive to Corvallis was good, but next time I would make the drive for more diverse options. read more

"The next bougie restaurant in Philomath" Let's admit its faults first: the curb appeal isn't all that great. Gravel driveway with lots of puddles, have to enter through back door, not a lot of ambiance. Looks like it's made of plywood and cardboard boxes. What you do have, however, is a small husband-and-wife operation, very nice people, where the owner has basically opened up her kitchen to the public. You are not going to find any microwaved, industrialized food here. You are getting home-cooked Thai / American food made from fresh ingredients and love. As other reviews have said, the food here is delicious and the industrialized mega-chain competitors can't even come close to the home cooking you get here. As the news anchors on the business channels will tell you, people invest in companies that they think have great future potential: Facebook lost billions before finally turning a profit. This place has incredible future potential. The owners are actively trying to renovate the place; fixing the landscaping, potholes, et cetera. What a great find! Although the exterior was a bit daunting (complete with a "no minors after ____pm" sign). I wasn't sure what we were getting into. It's a now windows along the highway kind of joint. However, while inside one side is an old school bar you might expect to find in the Oregon woods, we were welcomed by a a lovely staff and warm and delicious Thai food on the other side. There were SO many choices!! Pages and pages of options. We had the salad roll appetizer and I was so torn between all the great curry options, numerous seafood additions (seafood, shrimp and more) . I know it's a family owned place but last time I went the owner proceeded to take a lotto ticket to cash it out and didn't bring it back, I had to ask! She didn't even do anything after she took it, like help another customer, get food, etc. I mean it was 20$ and they have an fing cyber truck in the lot! We have been to the Woodsman a couple times now and its definitely a solid 3 stars...not the best, not the worst, but a solid average rating. We stop here on occasion because the location is so darn convenient...we live in Toledo and travel to Corvallis pretty often so its a great stop on the way home. Its a little strange, a mish-mash of what used to be a backwoodsy mom-and-pop type diner place, that now serves Thai food...but whatever, the fusion thing is popular now, right? I like all their logging decor in there, but its 180 degrees from the Thai food you are eating, but like I said, its cool and unique as ever! Anyway, the food...their curries are OK, definitely on the spicy side (which is OK), but the flavors are a bit strange, not bad, just not exceptional. I have had their red curry here before, which was OK, and my husband also gets their Massaman curry, which is also OK. Last night we were here and I got their Tom Kha soup, which does come in a large hot-pot, and did have all the staple ingredients like mushrooms, onions, tomatoes, and chicken. The flavor was OK again, but definitely not the best I have had. And the one thing that got me about the soup was that what I'm assuming was lemongrass and bay leaves were chopped up very fine, so you would come across these inedible particles with every bite. A bit annoying to constantly be spitting out these small hard particles. My favorite part of the meal though was we did order an appetizer of what was called "Heaven"...they seemed to be deep-fried chicken turnovers that were VERY good...these I would for sure order again! They are served with sweet-and-sour and were really tasty and cooked just right, I definitely recommend them! So we will probably be back to the Woodsman intermittently, as its a solidly average place, especially since it has a great location, the decor is amusing, and the food is A-OK. read more

I went to The Woodsman for the first time since the pandemic. I have fond memories of good food in an incongruous setting. Thai food with a logging saw seemed charming. However, my most recent meal hit the trifecta of badness - bad food, bad ambience and high prices. The charm I remembered was replaced with distaste for unpleasant meal saved only by enjoying time with my family. When I go to a restaurant, I normally take my leftovers home for lunch. We had leftovers but I left them because I would prefer paying for a Trader Joe's frozen meal rather than eat The Woodman's slop that I had already paid for. read more

Every since the pandemic it's seems like the prices here have gone up quite a bit. I was never much of a fan of their food in the first place. However it is the first and sometimes the last place to get dinner on the way out of town and you do have to consider how few options Philomath has besides fast food places. As you may see, all that I got this time was an order of the vegetable wraps. It's a common Tai/ Vietnamese food item and it's tough to get wrong. I only ordered one roll but I think you have to make a point to make sure they know that you just want one rather than two if you don't want to pay $7 instead of $4. Some places use shrimp but this restaurant only adds tofu as a protein. Its made it rice noodles, lettuce, carrots, mint, and maybe cilantro also. All wrapped in a cold piece of rice paper. They serve it with a peanut sauce which is a must, and they give you a huge amount. Probably won't go here again unless I'm not the one picking the restaurant. read more

The Woodsman is the best Thai restaurant around and one of the best I've had in the USA. My partner and I usually get the fried calamari (delicious and my favorite), spring rolls, and pot stickers as appetizers. For entrees we get the pad Thai extra spicy (grew up eating spicy Mexican food) and it is indeed spicy. I have tried all these curries and the mango is by far my favorite. If you are tired of rice you can ask for rice noodles instead for $1-2 more. The basil salmon fried rice is also very good. Lastly, they are always super friendly. read more

When my husband and I order 3 main dishes we can eat for 2-3 meals each, the entrees are huge. All their spicy menu items come at a medium level, and they get it right every time. The Woodsman is now in the top 3 of my favorite Thai food restaurants. Recommendation are hard to make, because most Thai food patrons I have talked to prefer a few specific dishes. Had it not been for other reviews, I would have never ventured in. The last time I in The Woodsman (Tavern) it was a logger and biker bar, mullets were in style (the first time) for most 'patrons' and it was the a time in college I knew I had ventured onto an unwise path. 'Nuf said. The Woodsman Dining, is a whole different world. I suppose the decor is similar (but frankly I can't remember), but that's where the similarities stop. The Woodsman is an excellent Thai restaurant with a vast menu. What you get is fresh food, nicely seasoned and large (really) portions in a no-non-sense setting. It was a busy Tuesday night after 7, but service was good. The restaurant is split 50/50 bar/family dining which is a plus for those who choose to eat without kids. Ordered too much food. Started by sharing pot stickers (almost a meal in itself) and then had Shrimp Pad Thai and Salmon Panang Curry as our two main courses. The Pad Thai had excellent flavor, such a generous helping had to bring more than half home. The Salmon Panang came with a really nice salad with a peanut dressing. But what really surprised me was the fact that the Salmon Panang was a very large salmon fillet in Panang sauce with very nice steamed vegtables. Not pieces of a Salmon, but a complete filet as large as any entry. The Panang sauce was excellent. Not terribly spicy (although you can ask to increase the heat), but really great flavor. Nothing was over-salted or over-cooked. It was really nicely done. The ambiance, while fine, isn't the best for a quiet, private dinner. Very casual, but totally fine. Food (especially at the price) is a five. Seating, is probably a 4 (especially if sitting in the middle of the room). If I could give 4.5 I probably would. I'm going to round up though, because I'm so blown away this was in Philomath and it's a restaurant that deserves to do really well! My wife and I have eaten there 3 times now and though the first time was good both subsequent experiences have been disappointing. Tonight was the final time. Don't get me wrong, the food is good. Just be sure that you give very specific instructions and ask very specific questions about your order or it's not going to be right. Ingredients that are mentioned in the menu description of a dish may not actually be in it when you get it. Ingredients that are not mentioned may be added (bell pepper and/or onion, usually) so conduct a personal risk assessment if you have allergies. Whenever you receive your favorite stir fry dish it may include nearly a pint of sauce/broth or maybe no more than whatever has coated the other ingredients. This is not consistent to the menu item and you don't know which you're getting until you open the container. My chef-instructors in culinary school stressed the importance of consistency. Without it your customers can't count on experiencing whatever dish they loved in the same way that made them love it in the first place. Since we can't know if what we liked here will be made the way we liked it every time we order it we'd rather just not bother. read more

Great Thai food in a kitschy setting. The Woodsman still had its rugged appearance, with a revamped menu. There is also the traditional "American" menu, but come here for the Thai food. The Tom Kha (spicy coconut soup) is delicious and the presentation will impress your dining companions. I really like (and almost always order) the crispy chicken with basil and green beans (number 88 on the menu), but be careful not to break a tooth on the bones that are left in. The noodle dishes are consistently good as well. Most dishes are in the $10-15 range. Friendly service and a full bar seals the deal. I think this place would be great for a casual date night if you enjoy surprises. Highly recommended for an unusual, but tasty, meal. read more

Woodsman!? What happened to you?? I got Pad See Ew, it was clumps of overcooked stuck together noodles covered by a salty spicy soy based sauce that really lacked flavor and brightness. Veggies were ok, meat was tender. I had pad see ew from Kim Hoa's in Corvallis two days ago and it put this to shame. I also got the house appetizers "Heaven" ...fried but not crispy with bland chicken inside and a tasty dipping sauce. Used to love this place but haven't been in a long time. Don't let the exterior or mill worker decor fool you, this place is one of the best kept Thai food secrets on the area. The portions are generous and the food is fantastic. If your a spicy food lover who is constantly disappointed by the hottest offerings this is your place...the extra spicy is out of this world. Unlike so many other places were spicy means more red pepper flakes here it means your meal is cooked in peppers and will be truly hot. This was really bad. The roasted garlic (not mentioned in description) sauce overpowered EVERYTHING in my dish and it was supposed to be a Thai basil rice dish...could not taste the basil at all. Pre pandemic I used to come and play cards here while snacking to my hearts content on fried tofu and woodsman fries ( a bizarre combo but live your dream). They have stayed open for pickup, and have become the go to for when my friends come into town and we all want a place to agree on (catering to the meat eaters, the vegans, the vegetarians, the gluten free, we can all eat here happily). They have literally everything on that giant menu, the staff is amazing, the food is quick with leftover guaranteed portions. I am happy to have a quirky place I can feel relaxed at, with food that hits the spot, and staff I am more than willing to give my money to. read more

This is by far some of the best Thai food I have ever had. We moved from Portland and were worried about the quality of food in the area, but we have been so impressed! The portions are huge, everything tasted really fresh, and the staff was super nice. The only reason I didn't give it five stars was that our food, even though it had been wrapped in a bag and was sitting flat in a box the whole ride home, had leaked out and completely drenched the whole container and bag, creating a huge mess. Not necessarily their faults, but it did put a damper on the experience. I have also included a picture of the front door, which I was very hesitant to go through.
