I started a class and then had some unexpected things come up. Dennis was very flexible and was able to reschedule my class at a later time this summer so I could pick up where I left off. I appreciate his strong emphasis on teaching good techniques and safety. I am looking forward to learning more when I restart. read more

Dennis is fantastic! I've had the best time learning woodworking from him. His shop has been a lovely place to get comfortable with woodworking and gain foundational knowledge, like learning how to calculate / measure correctly, how to use the tools, choosing appropriate woods, etc. I've appreciated that he puts a lot of emphasis on safety and proper technique when using the machinery. I end up feeling more confident with using the tools, with knowing how to avoid accidents. Dennis makes the class environment a comfortable and nice place to hang out. There's creative energy all about. I look forward to going each week and seeing what projects the other students are up to or chatting with him. He's not only a great instructor but also so easy and friendly to talk to! Dennis' enthusiasm for woodworking and old tools will quickly rub off on you. It's a great balance between a structured class curriculum and freedom to customize your projects. I've since discovered that going to the lumber yard and choosing woods feels a little like being a kid in a candy store. It's so much fun to do something hands on and design / build your own furniture. I highly recommend the Wood Work Shop to anyone looking up to pick up woodworking. read more

If you want to learn woodworking, this is a great place to do it. The shop has pretty much every tool you need and an instructor who's passionate about the craft. During my time here, Dennis showed me how to make a cutting board, a box, a mallet, and a bowel. He also took the time to answer questions I had about woodworking, beyond the specific project I'd be working on. Because people's schedules are always different, many people in the class are working on things that are different from you or are on a different stage. To be successful in the class it's good to always have a plan about what you're going to be doing for the day BEFORE you come to class. The reason I say before is because if you have a busy class, it can be challenging to get the instructor's attention without interrupting someone else. That being said, Dennis absolutely tries his best to give everyone a good amount of time with him and is very approachable. He will go above and beyond to help make sure you know what you should be doing and how to do it. Some days are busier than others so work with Dennis to see which day to come in is right for you (Wednesdays seem to be pretty empty at the time of posting this) read more

I took the beginner's class and it was a fun experience! I came in with absolutely zero knowledge but Dennis showed me how to use all sorts of different tools/machines safely. This is not a strict and structured class, so you have some freedom in how you want to make something (for the end table project, i made a coffee table instead as it would be more useful for me). Dennis goes around and gives each student advice and helps guide you to make your vision for a project a reality. He's also pretty funny and always has a stash of snacks/drinks to offer. You'll also be sure to meet a lot of awesome people here, and it was cool to see all the different sorts of projects everyone was working on each week. I'd definitely recommended for anyone looking for a new hobby to check this place out! read more

Dennis is an awesome instructor. He's been doing woodwork his whole life and his experience shows. I was nervous about being a beginner to woodwork and the safety aspect but he truly is the best at teaching the correct technique. I also enjoyed meeting with others in the workshop. It's nice to see what other people are working on. They are also very helpful and will offer a hand if you need it. If you're looking to give woodwork a try, I recommend Dennis! I am in the middle of my second set of classes with Dennis. I have enjoyed every minute and have learned a tremendous amount. Dennis is great at working with beginners as well as people with experience. His workshop is a fantasy land of tools of all kinds, projects in various stages, workbenches, and students. He is extremely patient and thorough, and always puts safety first. Students can make pretty much anything they want, and Dennis will guide you towards what is going to be most appropriate for your skill level. He is also vastly knowledgeable about the tools - maintains, repairs, and even builds some himself, and is always on the hunt for new equipment to expand the experience of the students. He is creative, thorough, and also incredibly interesting - with amazing stories to tell. If you are interested in learning to create in wood, I highly recommend The Wood Work Shop! read more

The Wood Works Shop is packed with every kind of power and hand tool you can imagine and instructor Dennis Yuan is there to teach students how to use them all - safely and effectively. Dennis is a highly skilled, extremely creative, woodworker in his own right. So are many others. What makes Dennis special is he is also a fantastic teacher. He's patient, always concerned about safety first, he steps in with encouragement and help but he also develops confidence in his students. He helps them stretch beyond their current comfort zone and always has just the right fix when the inevitable problem arrives. I've been taking classes here since January 2021 and knew nothing except an appreciation for wood when I started. I have much to learn but am become increasingly confident as I gain experience with more tools, more techniques, and more projects under Dennis's tutelege. I highly recommend The Wood Work's Shop for experienced and novice woodworkers alike! read more

This review is overdue but I have enjoyed working with Dennis and learning about woodworking when I was there. Unfortunately, due to COVID and my work obligations I had to take a break from classes. I do plan to return but as of right now I have my hands full. To start, Dennis is a patient and friendly teacher. His initial primary focus will be 100% on safety. You want to keep your fingers, right? This is super important to me and I am very grateful and glad that he went over this. Through working with him on the multiple projects in the beginner course, I began to appreciate the intricate skill required to make something as close to perfect as possible. For example, a cutting board seems like a simple matter, since many videos online will tell you to just put it through a machine and it will be level. However, we get to go the artisan route and learn how to properly use hand tools to achieve better results! I would recommend this class to anyone seriously interested in learning how to woodwork, whether they are a beginner or someone with some experience in their garage. Save yourself the headache and risk of being self-taught and make sure to contact Dennis! read more

I am a beginner woodworker with a modest shop in his garage. I had wasted a lot of time and materials trying to learn how to woodwork via Youtube. I was frustrated and needed help. So I sought out Dennis and the Wood Work Shop. Right out the gate, he told me his primary concern was safety. I would learn how to use tools the right way with safety always being a top priority. From our initial call, I admired his patience, through instruction and concern for safety. I signed up for the course before I even saw the shop. I knew from our conversation, I was in good hands. If you love woodworking, The Wood Work Shop is heaven on earth. It is exactly what you picture in a well-loved, productive woodshop. Full of every tool you can imagine. They are meticulously taken care of to ensure top working conditions. I have learned so much in my brief time in the shop. For example, I was terrible at using the table saw. Dennis patiently taught me the right way. I quickly went from being scared to confident using the machines. I am now able to create all sorts of fun projects. Dennis encourages me to challenge myself every time I am in the shop. Within weeks, I went from barely being able to use a table saw, to deftly navigating the shop's power tools while I make a coffee table out of teak. Skill growth like this would have taken me years without his instruction. Dennis is also a great guy and he has a great group in his classes. I look forward to connecting with my classmates weekly, seeing their growth, and cheering them on as they learn new things. Also, the price point is perfect. There are classes out there that are double the price of this class. They only offer to make one item over a week and can seem rushed. At the Wood Work Shop, you get time to ask questions, learn the right way and make what you want. I can not think of a better place to learn the art of woodworking. Even if you are just curious, give him a call and come in to see a class in action. I promised you will be hooked and love your new passion of woodworking at the Wood Work Shop. read more

Dennis customized a class for our girl scout troop so they could meet requirements of Cadette Woodworking Badge. He went above & beyond, showing them around his workshop and all of his extensive tools, both manual & power. He did the basic stuff required, but also taught them proper safety for each tool and the bigger equipment. He was an excellent teacher! Our girls felt confident and empowered by the end. I would give 6 stars if I could. Jasmine and Dennis are amazing teachers and artists. The service and individualized attention were like no other. They didn't make us feel rushed at all, and even gave us extra time. A very warm and friendly environment, you could tell that they are passionate about what they do and excited to share their craft with the community. You just don't find that in people these days! My best friend surprised me with this class for my birthday, and it was our first time wood turning. Jasmine made an otherwise intimidating task easy, approachable and fun while giving us creative freedom to make whatever design we wanted. She was attentive and so patient...pointing out tips and tricks as we went. I learned so much in just one class, and had a really awesome project to take home to boot!! This studio is far from home, but I'll be back again soon because you can't get a better experience than this. read more

This is a great place to get into woodworking no matter what level you're at. I had some previous experience in a high school shop but I wanted to get back into it in a setting that emphasized safe procedures and Dennis's shop provided exactly that. It's a good balance of strategic projects to hone your skills with both tools and machinery, but also giving you a lot of freedom in designing your project. He's an easy going teacher with a lot of experience and always makes sure his students are comfortable, whether it's providing snacks or ways to keep cool in the middle of summer, or providing the best advice on where to get deals on lumber. Dennis and the shop helped me discover my passion for woodworking. I was looking for a new creative skill to balance my daytime job and a way to earn a side income. Dennis' Wood Work Shop is amazing! I enrolled with my 14 year old son so he could learn woodworking since no woodworking in high school. I last took woodworking in high school and felt very rusty, but Dennis took time to see what I knew and built on it. Dennis treats everyone with patience and respect, no matter age or gender (ladies, you can do this!). His safety protocols are all hands-on demos, with much repetition so that you learned to use and respect the machines. As a teacher, I really appreciate the steps, calmness, and patience Dennis uses when teaching. While a small space, it's nice to have a variety of levels of students (4-5 students) working at the same time so you can learn from another and preview/review. Dennis had projects laid out in a sequential order so you build your skills - cutting board, box, table, then your choice. You work at your own pace - AWESOME! Dennis has every tool you could possibly need, and trains you on how to maintain the equipment, both for precision and safety. He monitors, supervises, and answers questions in a way that is calm and approachable, even when you make a mistake (oops! forgot to measure twice!) All the students get to know each other. While we have to wait sometimes to take turns on equipment, that helps build the comraderie. It feels like you're working in your uncle's garage, a home away from home. My 14 year old now can use compound miter saw, table saw, jointer, planer, drill press, orbital sander... We've learned not only valuable skills, but also the confidence to start our own workshop at home . We've taken these skills home, building shelves, tables, loft beds, hardwood floors... well worth the investment in the classes. Highly recommend; you'll leave with safety, knowledge, and skills to last a lifetime. Can't wait to take more classes - incredible hidden gem! read more

I've been coming to Dennis's shop for about a year now. One of the first things I noticed, and one of the most important attributes of a great instructor in my opinion, is that Dennis truly has a passion for explaining things. I'm not a quick learner, but it has never become an issue because Dennis will explain concepts or perform demonstrations as many times as a student needs until it "clicks" and they understand. The shop is small and can be a little cramped, but it's fully functional and has everything you'll need to build your project. Dennis has built a plan of linear progression. The projects you'll be working with will help you get familiar with the machinery in the shop as well as various types of hand tools. Each subsequent project will build upon the skills you picked up from the ones you've already completed. No previous knowledge is required. I had never used any of the tools found in the shop prior to the first lesson. I'm happy with my experience at the woodwork shop and plan to be a student here until I'm ready to put a shop together at home. Although woodworking can be frustrating and confusing at times, Dennis's instruction and guidance has contributed to this being a hobby I enjoy and look forward to doing and learning about. The feeling of satisfaction after completing a build and maybe giving it away as a gift for someone you care about should be experienced by everyone. Definitely give this place a try if you've ever had interest in woodworking. read more

I was very fortunate to find this wood shop located so close to where I live, and even more so to find that it is run by someone who is so very clearly passionate about his craft. Teachers are at their best when when they are passionate, and Dennis is no exception. He is friendly and full of anecdotes about his years learning and teaching and he readily seeks and enjoys the opportunity to share the benefit of his experience with others. His shop is cozy, but it has every single tool you would ever need and more. The small class sizes are great for getting individualized attention, and the pace you work at is your own based on your skill level and progress. Dennis has put together projects are designed to get students familiar with the various tools woodworkers use, and he takes care to ensure students are comfortable and understand proper safety when dealing with each of the tools in his shop. The first project I worked on was a cutting board, which at first glance one might not think would be very involved. However, by time time I was done, I had worked with a miter saw, joiner, table saw, router, hand planes, card planes, and a host of clamps and wood glue! I couldn't believe how well it turned out! I was almost afraid to use it, but having made it, I now also know how to restore it. Lastly, one more note about Dennis, is that he fosters good relationships with his students. There was a vintage tool sale being held on the Corona Heritage Park grounds and Dennis encouraged his students to attend and see the various tools that were for sale. While there he spent time with his students as they moved from stand to stand, offering advice on good deals for the and recommendations for tools that would be worth obtaining given their stage of progress in woodworking. Attending these classes are one of the highlights of my week, and no matter how tiring the day has been, I am energized each time I head over to attend class. read more

I joined this course and several classes were cancelled and at the end of the course I wanted those classes added on extending the course since I paid for them. If was a challenge to get but due to the fact that I agreed to join a second year he made an effort to do what was right and did give a reduction and additional time at the end of the course. unfortunately, the same issue occurred towards the end of the second year and the same discussion took place. I still had two months left of the second year course without the cancelled classes. He kept asking if I were going to join again and once I said no, that night he sent me a text saying that my classes were up and I owed him but he would let that slide. ? ???? I was completely caught off guard. It took some time for me to post this but I am now going to follow up with small claims so that he does not think this is how you can treat people or run a business. I came across this workshop school while I was trying to build a woodworking work bench for my garage. I was a beginner at the time with little woodworking experience and wanted to explore the craft. I had no idea how much there is to learn in the arena of woodworking. So far I've build a few items I use every day, such as my bed, shoe rack, juice press, roubo workbench. I've built other miscellaneous items as well. It's really nice when you build something by hand and give it to someone as a present. They will truly appreciate a handmade gift. I've continued working with Dennis for quite some time now and hope to learn more tricks of the trade as my interest grows. I attended a full course with my girlfriend here at the wood work shop. I learned a lot from Dennis and thoroughly enjoyed working on my projects. It's a pretty far drive for me from LA but I still looked forward to my weekly class at the woodshop. While there is a structure and path for the course, Dennis was open to us expressing ourselves by modifying the project with our personal touch or customized designs. I prefer this approach even if it means I complete less projects in the given time, because we benefit a lot more from the more involved design and problem solving steps than we would in a more "cookie cutter" course. Unfortunately, covid-19 and employment changes forced us to pause our classes here for the time being. However, I hope to return soon to continue working and learning new skills with Dennis. I was looking to improve my wood-working skills, as I was relatively new to the trade. Finding The Wood Work Shop was a game changer. Dennis is the owner who exhibits his passion for woodworking into the teaching and development of his students. He is very patient and has shown many techniques that only someone who has devoted 25 + years of his life to the trade would know. When I first joined I thought the Wood Work Shop would be college style setting where you show up, they give you the "how to" and that was it for the week. It has turned out to be so much more. Dennis is always there to guide you through each project and and show you how to do things you never thought you were capable of. The Wood Work Shop also offers paint & oil finishing class, welding, CNC courses and a few others that will compliment your finished products. My skills have greatly enhanced in the few months that I have been attending his classes. The projects have continuously challenged me and kept my interests peaked. His classes definitely help shape each individual, from a beginner (learning what the tools are and how to use them),to a more advanced wood worker (feeling confident with the tools and techniques to execute most projects), with the guidance from Dennis. The Wood Work Shop has definitely been a factor in heightening my passion for this new hobby of mine. read more

He also allowed for wide latitude in the projects that students select for their class. I'm enjoying every moment of this class!! Dennis is a one of a kind teacher. He's hilarious and a kind soul. I have a lot of fun in his classes because he encourages us to think outside the box when creating projects to add our personal touches to them. With my cutting board project, I made a goofy cat, I soldered in the details and rounded its paws. I'm proud of that lil boy. As someone who has never so much as used a hammer for anything, my initial worry was working with the loud and sharp industrial machines. Not going to lie, it is scary, but he makes sure each of his students is competent and comfortable using them before allowing us to go solo. He also reminds us that a good amount of fear is healthy to have so we're aware not to go into an autopilot state when operating the machines. So far so good! There's just so much to learn in Dennis's class, a plus is he's versatile when it comes to his background in fine art so it's cool to go back and forth and feed off his creativity. He is filled to the brim with years of information so it's recommended to pick his brain with any questions you have because he loves to share his knowledge. He also has like a jillion fancy woodworking tools he splurges for us to use some as old as 1902 I think he said! Highly recommend this class to anyone of any competency level of woodwork.
