His shop has been a lovely place to get comfortable with woodworking and gain foundational knowledge, like learning how to calculate / measure correctly, how to use the tools, choosing appropriate woods, etc. I've appreciated that he puts a lot of emphasis on safety and proper technique when using the machinery. I end up feeling more confident with using the tools, with knowing how to avoid accidents. Dennis makes the class environment a comfortable and nice place to hang out. There's creative energy all about. I look forward to going each week and seeing what projects the other students are up to or chatting with him. If you want to learn woodworking, this is a great place to do it. The shop has pretty much every tool you need and an instructor who's passionate about the craft. During my time here, Dennis showed me how to make a cutting board, a box, a mallet, and a bowel. He also took the time to answer questions I had about woodworking, beyond the specific project I'd be working on. Because people's schedules are always different, many people in the class are working on things that are different from you or are on a different stage. To be successful in the class it's good to always have a plan about what you're going to be doing for the day BEFORE you come to class. The reason I say before is because if you have a busy class, it can be challenging to get the instructor's attention without interrupting someone else. That being said, Dennis absolutely tries his best to give everyone a good amount of time with him and is very approachable. He will go above and beyond to help make sure you know what you should be doing and how to do it. This review is overdue but I have enjoyed working with Dennis and learning about woodworking when I was there. Unfortunately, due to COVID and my work obligations I had to take a break from classes. I do plan to return but as of right now I have my hands full. To start, Dennis is a patient and friendly teacher. His initial primary focus will be 100% on safety. This is a great place to get into woodworking no matter what level you're at. I've been coming to Dennis's shop for about a year now. One of the first things I noticed, and one of the most important attributes of a great instructor in my opinion, is that Dennis truly has a passion for explaining things. I'm not a quick learner, but it has never become an issue because Dennis will explain concepts or perform demonstrations as many times as a student needs until it "clicks" and they understand. The shop is small and can be a little cramped, but it's fully functional and has everything you'll need to build your project. Dennis has built a plan of linear progression. The projects you'll be working with will help you get familiar with the machinery in the shop as well as various types of hand tools. Each subsequent project will build upon the skills you picked up from the ones you've already completed. No previous knowledge is required. I had never used any of the tools found in the shop prior to the first lesson. I'm happy with my experience at the woodwork shop and plan to be a student here until I'm ready to put a shop together at home. Although woodworking can be frustrating and confusing at times, Dennis's instruction and guidance has contributed to this being a hobby I enjoy and look forward to doing and learning about. I last took woodworking in high school and felt very rusty, but Dennis took time to see what I knew and built on it. His safety protocols are all hands-on demos, with much repetition so that you learned to use and respect the machines. As a teacher, I really appreciate the steps, calmness, and patience Dennis uses when teaching. While a small space, it's nice to have a variety of levels of students (4-5 students) working at the same time so you can learn from another and preview/review. Dennis had projects laid out in a sequential order so you build your skills - cutting board, box, table, then your choice. You work at your own pace - AWESOME! Dennis has every tool you could possibly need, and trains you on how to maintain the equipment, both for precision and safety. He monitors, supervises, and answers questions in a way that is calm and approachable, even when you make a mistake (oops! forgot to measure twice!) All the students get to know each other. While we have to wait sometimes to take turns on equipment, that helps build the comraderie. It feels like you're working in your uncle's garage, a home away from home. My 14 year old now can use compound miter saw, table saw, jointer, planer, drill press, orbital sander... We've learned not only valuable skills, but also the confidence to start our own workshop at home . We've taken these skills home, building shelves, tables, loft beds, hardwood floors... well worth the investment in the classes. I was very fortunate to find this wood shop located so close to where I live, and even more so to find that it is run by someone who is so very clearly passionate about his craft. Teachers are at their best when when they are passionate, and Dennis is no exception. He is friendly and full of anecdotes about his years learning and teaching and he readily seeks and enjoys the opportunity to share the benefit of his experience with others. His shop is cozy, but it has every single tool you would ever need and more. The small class sizes are great for getting individualized attention, and the pace you work at is your own based on your skill level and progress. Dennis has put together projects are designed to get students familiar with the various tools woodworkers use, and he takes care to ensure students are comfortable and understand proper safety when dealing with each of the tools in his shop. The first project I worked on was a cutting board, which at first glance one might not think would be very involved. However, by time time I was done, I had worked with a miter saw, joiner, table saw, router, hand planes, card planes, and a host of clamps and wood glue! I couldn't believe how well it turned out! I was almost afraid to use it, but having made it, I now also know how to restore it. Lastly, one more note about Dennis, is that he fosters good relationships with his students. There was a vintage tool sale being held on the Corona Heritage Park grounds and Dennis encouraged his students to attend and see the various tools that were for sale. While there he spent time with his students as they moved from stand to stand, offering advice on good deals for the and recommendations for tools that would be worth obtaining given their stage of progress in woodworking. I was looking for a wood working shop that would be a good fit for my 13 year old son. I was concerned about his safety while operating wood working tools and machinery, 13 year old boys don't have the best attention span... Needless to say Dennis (Business owner/ Instructor) did not disappoint. He is a great instructor and amazing with kids! I came across this workshop school while I was trying to build a woodworking work bench for my garage. I was a beginner at the time with little woodworking experience and wanted to explore the craft. I attended a full course with my girlfriend here at the wood work shop. I learned a lot from Dennis and thoroughly enjoyed working on my projects. It's a pretty far drive for me from LA but I still looked forward to my weekly class at the woodshop. While there is a structure and path for the course, Dennis was open to us expressing ourselves by modifying the project with our personal touch or customized designs. I prefer this approach even if it means I complete less projects in the given time, because we benefit a lot more from the more involved design and problem solving steps than we would in a more "cookie cutter" course. Unfortunately, covid-19 and employment changes forced us to pause our classes here for the time being. However, I hope to return soon to continue working and learning new skills with Dennis. I'm enjoying every moment of this class!! Dennis is a one of a kind teacher. He's hilarious and a kind soul. I have a lot of fun in his classes because he encourages us to think outside the box when creating projects to add our personal touches to them. With my cutting board project, I made a goofy cat, I soldered in the details and rounded its paws. I'm proud of that lil boy. As someone who has never so much as used a hammer for anything, my initial worry was working with the loud and sharp industrial machines. Not going to lie, it is scary, but he makes sure each of his students is competent and comfortable using them before allowing us to go solo. He also reminds us that a good amount of fear is healthy to have so we're aware not to go into an autopilot state when operating the machines. So far so good! Greatest yelp find I have ever had without a doubt! I came believe it has taken me this long to write a review. I am a novice woodworker, and had very limited hand tools and nowhere to work. I met with Dennis and he showed me around his shop. He has every tool you could need, and multiples of just about everything. Dennis is a very personable individual, a great teacher, and has tons of experience to share. I have made bowls, boxes, and tables with his help and the resources of the shop. He even helped me find the exact type of wood I was looking for to make something for my wife. You are not likely to encounter someone as dedicated and passionate about what they do, or helping their students as Dennis. Whether you are a novice like me, or a seasoned woodworker who just needs the use of a well complemented shop, Dennis can accommodate whatever you need. Take a class and check it out!! read more
