It was empty when we got there about 20 minutes after opening, however the place filled up quickly! James ,our bartender, was patient as we decided what to order while enjoying our drinks. The food, service, and friendly atmosphere were AMAZING! So much so that we made a reservation to eat here again when we come back out in two weeks. This is a wonderful place to have dinner -- particularly a romantic date night. The restaurant is small, but inviting, and the staff is marvelous. We've eaten here many times -- at the bar; at a table; outside -- and without exception, the food has been absolutely spot on. Their specials are always creative and fresh -- particularly their fish specials. And the wine? Forget about it! You should have many things to choose from, depending on you mood. Chez Francois gets a lot of recognition as a fine dining restaurant in Vermillion, and it is very good; but The Wine Vault should be in that discussion as well! Fine dining, perfect portions, great food, and reasonable prices! The Wine Vault has both indoor and patio seating. We typically sit at the bar and chat with one of the managers who we ended up having common soccer friends with. Everyone is very attentive and friendly; both seating areas offer a relaxing, modern ambiance. Start with the lobster bisque. It's great and unlike some bisques out there, you get a good portion of actual lobster. I typically go with the hanger surf and turf (my favorite dish) or the filet. And it is always fresh! My wife had the shrimp tacos and she really enjoyed them. The portions aren't huge, but they are just right. If you are really hungry, add the scallops to any dish for about $12. They are excellent. I've been meaning to try this place for a few years and I'm so disappointed in myself for not getting there sooner. It is wonderful. Highly recommend reservations. The ambience was great, the service was wonderful, the food was even better. The wine selection is reasonable in terms of quality and price. We had sangria's that were fresh made and delicious. We started with the lobster bisque soup and also got scallops with lobster, an upgrade suggested by James, as well as the special menu item lobster roll with fries and truffle aïoli. The staff went out of their way to make us feel welcome and while this place is small, hence the reservation recommendation, don't let it fool you, this place is amazing. They do have a tent outback with additional tables that has heat and a fan, and I imagine that it will be reasonably comfortable during the summer as well. We will definitely be returning to the wine vault. read more

What a wonderful place for an upscale meal. The Wine Vault is located in Downtown Vermilion and has a very pretty outdoor seating area. We visited for a very early dinner (about 5pm) and quite literally had it to ourselves. It has a small heater, cute landscaping, a fire pit and even a tiny, quaint chandelier. The Wine Vault has a stellar cocktail menu! I had the blueberry mojito, which was super fragrant and had a perfect mix to it. It was oddly refreshing and served in a sweet mason jar that made for a cute photo. For dinner, I ordered the lobster roll and was surprised at how generous the portion was (this is Ohio, not the coast, so I'm used to being disappointed by lobster rolls). Excellent juicy flavor and served at the perfect temperature (that sweet spot of chilled but not cold, which a lot of restaurants fail at) and with a side of house fries. For those on a budget, note that the prices here lean higher, especially for Vermilion, so plan that accordingly. But, this is chef-made food. Not a burger or pizza joint like other Vermilion establishments. Our server was very helpful and attentive and told us to ask for her by name next time. I really liked that! Call ahead to make reservations. As we were leaving, it started to become busier with people coming for cocktails or dinner. During COVID, we felt all the safety precautions were appropriately taken. My family has only dined out publicly a handful of times during the pandemic, and we felt comfortable enough here in the outdoor seating area. We'll be back! read more

Visited here for the first time last night. Beautiful bar with a great outdoor patio. We were immediately greeted and felt very welcomed. The menu is fantastic and creative. I will definitely be back! We stopped in for a quick drink and were surprised by the great wine list and unique atmosphere. This was an old bank and they have kept some of the original elements such as the vault, the high ceilings, etc. They feature a wide variety of wines from around the world, a large selection of micro brews and an array of cocktails. We have been traveling and The Wine Vault is the best we've had in a long time. Homemade sangria with a stainless steel straw that had a scoop on the end to dig the fruit out. We went here for a family meal to celebrate my birthday in April. I had just had knee surgery about 2 weeks prior and was on crutches and the staff was extremely helpful and friendly. They made sure to clear a path so I could get through safely and never once made me feel like an inconvenience. I realize that should be the norm for any restaurant, but anymore it really isn't. We were seated on the enclosed outside patio where it was warm and quiet for our large group. We had 7 people with 2 servers alternating so we never ran out of drinks or felt unattended, even though we weren't in the main dining area. The meat cheese boards were a fantastic sampling and our server made sure to tell us what everything was and answer any questions. Drinks were so good with a nice selection of options for just about any taste. We got a combination of burgers, steak, scallops and the pot pie and everything was perfectly cooked and flavorful. The portions are not huge - more like European portions. So if you're coming here expecting American portions, you'll be disappointed. That said, no one left hungry. My only "complaint" is that I wish it was a little larger of a space so they could serve more customers! :) read more

We had a nice visit with friends at The Wine Vault in Vermillion. The staff is super friendly. It was a beautiful night to sit on the outside patio. I was okay with the train going by quite a bit, but if you are not into loud trains you may want to sit inside. I ordered a few different sangrias they all were equally delicious. My tuna tartare was outstanding, just felt like it should have more with it like a little rice. Everyone loved their food but wished the servings were bigger. read more

Wife and I had dinner at The Wine Vault for the first time last night. Owner Josh served us. It was excellent! She got the filet I got the surf and turf. At first I thought a 4oz filet was really small when reading the menu. Once we received our food and ate I realized the portions were perfect. Both of our steaks were very tender and cooked exactly how we wanted them. To finish off our dinner we had the pistachio cheesecake which my wife was unsure about. This little gem is like Cheers on steroids. The menu is a five star menu, or better. The food, wine, and cocktails are an experience you will rarely, if ever, find anywhere else. Everything here exceptional, including the owners and the wait staff, they purposefully create an experience you won't forget, every time. They even have an enclosed outdoor patio with fireplace and heaters for all year round, it makes you feel like you're on vacation even when you're not. It's not a big place but that's why we like it. This little spot is a hidden gem in Vermillion. The staff was very accommodating and knowledgeable, the beer and wine was top notch, and the food was off the hook. They have indoor and outdoor dining; it's a little bit tight inside but the ambience makes it all work. My date had scallops over homemade Potato gnocchi and I had flank steak with new potatoes and lobster meat. What a cute spot in an old bank building! This is a very intimate restaurant as it seems that it sits only about 50 people at a time. I came here for an anniversary dinner with my boyfriend and it is a perfect date spot. We started off with a bottle of wine and I have to admit that I thought most of the bottles were decently priced for being a wine bar. Don't get me wrong there was still an upcharge but I have seen much higher prices at lesser quality restaurants. I was so happy to hear from our waitress that the chef makes everything from scratch including the gelato on the dessert menu! A chef that is also a dessert/pastry chef?! Whoa! We ordered in total the arancini, the short rib burger, the Steak and Potatoes and an amazing s'mores dessert! The sauce that was served with the arancini was delightful and made the dish complete. The burger was okay just a little too heavy for my taste and the steak was cooked perfectly. The kitchen closes at 10pm but the restaurant stays open for people to finish their meals and enjoy their wine and cocktails. We never got the feeling that they were trying to kick us out or hurry us to finish our wine. I will happily visit again! read more

Fantastic dining experience! You won't find food this good for this price anywhere else! Wine list is complete, by the bottle and by the glass. This beautiful old building actually use to be a bank and the vault still remains and is used to... you guessed it, store the wine. It is a tight fit but this adds to the authenticity as many of the finest restaurants in Paris and Rome are equal in size. What it lacks in size it makes up for in stature. We went on the advice of a friend, who is a local and drove about an hour to get to Vermilion. His friends were the owners. Josh and Maggie have an excellent staff and were working very hard to make everyone's dinner experience amazing. A line formed about 4:45pm in lieu of reservations(we were 3rd in line), in the back of the restaurant, by the outdoor seating. We chose to eat inside and the setting was very inviting. We took friends that we had never went out to dinner with and I can speak for everyone saying the food and drinks were 5 star! We started with a Cheese Board. Everything disappeared. All of the cheese was very good but highlight for me was the candied nuts. My wife had a Strawberry Peach House-Made White Sangria and I ordered a Dark, low IBU, Beer. She tried another flavor of sangria next and I went with the same beer. Our friends both got a cup of Lobster Bisque to start. My wife and I shared the Shroom Fries. The Shroom Fries are a must order. My wife chose the Scallops and I selected the Flank Steak Satay. Perfection! She forced me to try the scallops. The potato gnocchi made the dish. So good! Two of us ordered the pecan dessert. Great choice to cap off one of the best meals I have ever had. Outside of my wife's cooking....of course. Little shops surrounding the restaurant made this a must visit. We capped off our night watching the sunset from a little park on Route 6. The night was a 10/10. read more
