We ended up walking out of the place with unicorn and mermaid birthday cake candle holders - such great bait for the kids. I ended up walking out with a handmade charcuterie board made by someone local --- the proprietress' husband, in fact. Funny story: we were walking around town when we saw a man selling a pile of charcuterie boards he was selling right there on his driveway. Unfortunately, he doesn't accept credit cards - he mentioned that his wife has a credit card machine. Lo and behold! After walking around some more, we found this shop selling his boards and it turns out, it was the woodworker's wife's! Anyway, great souvenir as it was made by a local artist and "Mendocino" was burned into the wood.

I don't recall exactly what wasn't my style last time I visited, but Tangents is actually a cool little shop. They're located across from Harvest Market in Mendocino with plenty of street parking. The staff was very welcoming and helped check on prices of items that needed a ladder. They do charge a 3.5% fee on credit card purchases, so bring cash if you're planning on a bigger purchase. Still, the stained glass piece I bought was very well priced for its size and considering it was locally made.

We were in town for the weekend celebrating her December birthday and I was able to secure a lovely couples 90 minute session for both of us. We arrived with time to spare and browsed around at the cute shop merch. Much to my surprise, we were greeted by the boutique owner, Nahara, and she checked us in, asked if we needed anything, and walked us downstairs to the couples suite. I was partnered with Beth; and my girlfriend had Rebecca. I will discuss my massage first, and go from there. Beth - 90 minute massage - Beth was absolutely WONDERFUL. She is like a comforting hug in spring. She was attentive, asked all the right questions as far as what I was looking for or expectations, she listened to exactly what I needed, and off to the table we went. I mentioned that I've had a few bad massage experiences recently (NOT here) and that I really just want a RELAXING (no talking) true swedish massage with fluid movements and NO pointy pressure. Beth actually gave me an extremely comforting massage with Lomi Lomi movements. I would compare her techniques almost to the flow of ocean waves without the turbulence. She would ask about pressure, but did not interrupt my zen with talking. She was patient, kind, comforting, made me feel safe as far as comfort on the massage table, and made me feel so special while receiving this service. My only regret, literally..... is that I don't live closer to schedule with her more often. Thank you, Beth, please continue to be wonderful with clients. Rebecca - 90 minute massage - I can't really speak for my girlfriend about her massage. She said it was good overall. She did mention, as we both observed, that she had all shoes and socks off her feet and was walking around barefoot. It was unnerving to my girlfriend to look down from the face cradle to see her bare feet. Also, the amount of just checking in about pressure points to my partner did overall mildly disturb the zen of my side by side massage with Beth. It was noticeable how seemingly different they are with style, chatter, and overall shoe attire. Afterwards, I followed up back at the boutique office with Nahara about something that had not been noted over the phone when scheduling to celebrate my girlfriend's birthday. She proceeded to apologize, provide a percentage off the service price, and subsequently offered us a very decadent chocolate treat that she was offering as a merch purchase at the spa. It might be my new favorite matcha white chocolate indulgence. Thank you, Nahara, Thank you Beth, Thank you Rebecca.... we will absolutely return for future getaway spa visits.

It's been around forever, and once you step inside, it just keeps going, winding into a surprisingly large space with a solid nature and environmental section, plus science fiction, fiction, and well curated staff picks. A highlight of our visit was the resident bookstore cat, the Great Catsby, a dignified 16-year-old. We didn't see any posted rules, but it's worth remembering: interaction with a cat is always on the cat's terms. Sit calmly nearby and you might be chosen (we were lucky!), but it's never a given with any cat, especially a senior one. A lovely bookstore experience. Long live the indies!

For a few years, my Dad was an artist in residence here during the summer months. He revived their…read moreprintmaking studio, created new work, collaborated with artists that worked in other mediums, and taught classes. I visited him each summer. It's just a couple hours from San Francisco. Of all the places my Dad visited and taught at around the world, Mendocino was his favorite place. It's a magical place perched above the cliffs facing the Pacific Ocean, just beyond the Headlands. There's a courtyard that connects each studio, the gallery at one end. There's paintings, pottery, photography, lithographs, glass sculptures, etc. During these times, the art center is closed but you can view current artists' work on their website. Some pieces are available for purchase. You can even see a little bit of its magic through the screen.
