Marilyn immediately got right to business. She didn't try to oversell me or push me toward something I didn't need--she simply listened to what I was looking for and helped me find a pair that worked for me. There was quite a selection to choose from and she really made this process seem easy and pleasant. It's obvious Marilyn knows her optics. I don't know if she's the owner or a partner, but she certainly knows how to take care of her customers. She was warm, welcoming, and, most importantly, patient. She took the time to help me even though it was a busy day. And yes, I should probably mention that I did end up buying a pair of binoculars--and I'm very happy with them! I also expected to pay a premium for what I purchased simply because of the location. To my surprise, when I got home to check reviews, I also found out there wasn't any crazy markup. There was none. I already felt like I had won by finding a quality product while traveling, only to discover I didn't have to pay the "tourist tax" for it. NICE! This tells me they're not exploiting their customers when they obviously could. Even if there had been a premium, Marilyn was such a genuinely friendly person that I wouldn't have thought twice about it. Great customer service goes a long way. And, not being completely selfish, we were also able to pick up a few things for our kiddo, who wasn't with us on the trip. There were so many interesting things to choose from that could keep a kid--or a young engineer--busy for quite a while. What a cute home decor and gift shop…read more It has bath and body items that smell so luxurious and cute little knick knacks that you never thought you needed. We ended up walking out of the place with unicorn and mermaid birthday cake candle holders - such great bait for the kids. I ended up walking out with a handmade charcuterie board made by someone local --- the proprietress' husband, in fact. Funny story: we were walking around town when we saw a man selling a pile of charcuterie boards he was selling right there on his driveway. Unfortunately, he doesn't accept credit cards - he mentioned that his wife has a credit card machine. Lo and behold! After walking around some more, we found this shop selling his boards and it turns out, it was the woodworker's wife's! Anyway, great souvenir as it was made by a local artist and "Mendocino" was burned into the wood.

Literally, ORGANIC GALORE... even their sketch books! It's a nice place to browse and see what they have... but of course, with most organic shops... it was very pricey. Pricey but worth it, right? But I do like natural fibers grown organically by people who receive a decent wage for doing it. And this store carries a lot of them. I've been in here several times over the years and always find something I like - whether it's an organic hemp hoodie that's really comfortable or an organic cotton sweater that's absolutely adorable or a t-shirt with a photo of George W. Bush with a caption under it that says "American Psycho". People working here are always really nice too. And you can pick up a glass pipe, if that's your thing. Fucking hippie.

We are so loaded up on books (think stacks on stacks on stacks), but we wanted to support this business, so we bought a big candle and some fun stickers. I highly recommend Gallery Bookshop, and I'll definitely plan to return next time we're in the area.

Justine's store is welcoming and full of interesting clothing, as well as other items ranging from lotions to teas. The femmes bought a wide range of items and I found this blue, green and grey hat knit from Susan's hand-carded, hand-spun yarn that is naturally died. Susan's knit work is glorious. The head-wear has drawn a dozen comments from folks since I got it two weeks ago on Dec. 26, during that boxing day shopping tour. I also bought two handcrafted herbal teas that helped me fight a chest cold that struck on the drive up. We visited the store twice during our five-day stay. Stop by and be ready to be enchanted.
