She and the owner, Judy, were both lovely. They let me try everything on and see how it looked outside in the natural light and waited patiently while I FaceTimed my friend. I appreciated that the owner was open to a little bargaining. I ended up getting 2 pairs of 14K gold gemstone studs, one Tanzanite and the other Peridot. We popped in on a Sunday afternoon with our 5 year old daughter, and the staff was very warm and welcoming of her! They helped her pick out some beautiful and reasonably priced pieces of polished stone - one heart-shaped rose quartz, and one piece of labradorite. I can't believe I haven't already written a review about this place! I've been visiting their shop for years. Staff and owner are consistently kind, knowledgeable people who clearly have a love of shiny rocks just like I do. And they are so friendly and welcoming. 10+ years ago when I was a college student living off of near-nothing, my friend and I would go road tripping up to Mendocino for a weekend. Staff were always welcoming, let us try things on, and basically didn't make us feel like grimy window-shoppers. Nothing has changed as far as how they run things, I just get to spend money there now. They have a broad selection for most any budget (high or low) and I have spent many happy hours here and have some wonderful, higher quality and unique pieces. I even bought my wedding jewelry here. Came here to window shop and ended up looking at bands to go with my engagement ring. The ladies here brought out about 7 different rings for me to try on. I found one that I loved but was unsure about us making the impulse buy. They suggested I take pictures, told me no pressure, and to come back anytime if we were ready to buy it. I was back about an hour later :) and she told me they had saved all the rings I was trying on on a separate ring holder for me to see again when I came back. So sweet. I would give 10 stars if I could. We walked in here after having an unsavory experience at another jeweler store down the street. My fiancé and I were looking for wedding bands, and were greeted by Kimberly and the store owner, Judy. They were super helpful. There was no pressure put on us to purchase right away. The pricing was incredibly fair. The customer service was excellent, and overall they are just great people! We ended up buying both our wedding bands and an extra necklace for myself. MENDOCINO gems - My wedding band I purchased at Mendocino Gems! - Jewelry Near Me - Mendocino, California

Bought a very expensive grey and black diamond necklace from here a few years back (see pic of full necklace). Over the years, I noticed the edges of the sliced grey diamonds developing what looks like brownish gunk (see pix). I presumed that it was dirt buildup. Early this year, I decided to see if I could clean it. By this point, the buildup at the edges were so thick that I was able to use my fingernails to remove chunks off. Huge chunks came off, leaving big holes in the grey diamond (see pix). Turns out, it wasn't dirt buildup but some kind of epoxy that was initially the same color as the grey diamonds (deceiving the buyer into thinking that the diamonds were bigger than they actually are) but over time turned brown and brittle with oxidation. Given this, I am pretty sure I was totally ripped off. But I was willing to overlook it if the shop were able to rectify it via replacing the epoxied diamonds with whole diamonds. Well I contacted Judy the owner, who told me to send my necklace back for repairs. I sent it back 1st week of May. It's now almost Sept. To this day, not only have I NOT received the necklace back, but I can hardly ever get in touch with her. I've called, emailed, left messages with her assistants. So far she has only called me back ONCE about 2 weeks ago, after I got really angry about the lack of communication. But even then there doesn't seem to be any information apart from the canned response that the guy who initially made it is still working on it!! I am seriously starting to think that I cannot trust these people. Buyers beware. I am extremely frustrated and angry. read more

The owner Judith is a dishonest person. Do not buy your gems or jewelry here. I left an item of jewelry in her care, at her suggestion to replicate, and she has kept it, completely shutting me out. She doesn't answer calls or emails concerning this piece of jewelry she took from me over two years ago. And from other reviews here, it seems like she is doing this to others. It's simply not worth the headache of it all, and now theft. This won't go unnoticed. Edit: the owner contacted me and apologized. I'm waiting for her to send my earrings. read more

Let me start by saying the service here is amazing! My fiancé and I recently became engaged this Saturday. The ring he bought was beautiful but 3 sizes too big! We took it to Gems Sunday morning, the owner had estimated that it would be ready the following day. Well, within 8 hours she had called us, after closing time, and told us we could come pick it up! I couldn't believe it! The ring band was the perfect size, and there was no damage to the diamond or the setting for it. My husband and I live in Oakland, he lived in Mendacino for a few years. We got our wedding rings from the very friendly staff at Mendocino Gems. The ring's artist is a surfer from Hawaii at Komo Koa Jewelry and both our rings have redwood inlay. The artist gives a lifetime guarantee on the rings (in regards to damage). These rings were so perfect for us. We were looking for affordable and very durable as we are both competitive sailors and use our hands a lot. There is a John Muir inscription on the back of mine and they cost around $390 for both rings. I usually do not like snooping around jewelry stores, but the staff here was friendly, informative and not pushy. They made the experience very pleasant. read more

I brought some rings in to be sized and some earrings to be restored. 3 months and several phone calls later I got tired of waiting and went into the store to ask for my jewelry back. None of my rings had been sized and she lost my earrings. Judy is the best. A real pro. Love this spot. Great pieces at fair prices. My friend bought a diamond band and had it sized within 30 minutes. They offered to clean our jewelry while we waited and are open to working with us to redesign pieces. I can't speak for the two people that had bad experiences but i am hard pressed to think a local can be in business this long and be ripping off customers. Especially with all the other 5 star ratings. They bring pieces out, let you try them on, have great service and are friendly and welcoming. Would go here, Panache, or Mendocino Jewelry in a heartbeat - the Go-to's in town. She is fair, well priced, and always a little corner area where pieces are on sale. Love that 'treasure chest' spot.
