First day on Jekyll Island and decided to give The Wharf a try for dinner. The restaurant is on the water with a beautiful outdoor dining area which is dog friendly. We only had a short wait for a table. Our server arrived shortly after being seated and we ordered drinks and asked for a fresh bowl of water for our pup. The bowl that was at our table when we sat down was absolutely filthy. She brought us another bowl of water which was almost as dirty as the first one. We ordered the Wharf burger with sweet potato fries and a dozen raw oysters. The burger and oysters arrived and looked amazing. The burger was ordered to be medium cooked but was actually rare. My husband ate a few bites but couldn't eat anymore due to the undercooking. The sweet potato fries were very good and the oysters were too. We don't like to complain normally so we didn't say anything about the water or the burger. What I couldn't believe was when she came to our table to clear it, she took the tray of oyster shells and dumped the melted ice right behind my chair through the deck which splashed all over the back of my legs and shoes. I was astonished. Our experience there was not a good one and we will not be returning. read more

Happy to report that my husband and I had a great meal at the Wharf! We were seated outside on the deck, and we were lucky, because even though it was August it was very comfortable. My husband had the fried pickles to start, which were cool because they were sliced lengthwise. They were great. I had the corn ribs. What is a corn rib? I will tell you - the chef cuts an ear of corn into quarters lengthwise and then deep fries the quarters (the "ribs") so they're easy to eat. They are delicious! They covered them in Parm and spicy mayo - phenomenal. Get them if you go. Then my husband had the Southern fried chicken sandwich, and I had the sorghum grain bowl with blackened redfish. His sandwich was excellent, according to him, and my grain bowl was really delicious. I am not sure whether it was sorghum or quinoa, but it had edamame, tomatoes, cucumbers, parsley and lettuce, and came with a lemon dressing on the side that really went well with the fish. The fish was their fresh catch of the day and it was indeed fresh :) We also had dessert, my husband had the key lime pie and I had the banana pudding in a mason-style glass. They were both good, I might not bother ordering them again, but I'm glad we tried them out. We had some pretty lame drinks on the island - but not at this fabulous restaurant, where I had a Frose that was quite strong! My husband had the frozen margarita and it was great too. They have live music Thursday-Saturday nights, and the band was super, playing 70s classic rock and really vibing. Also our friendly and prompt server, Corey, saved me from a large bug that he spotted about to land on my elbow and whisked it away before I ever even quite saw it, which was good for everyone, because I am not a bug person. I am grateful that I stopped by the wharf when I was in Jekyll Island for a conference. Earlier that day, the president of the association, holding the event shared her experience about Jekyll Island club and the Victorian homes. I thought it sounded cool but that evening I was on my own for dinner and got on to Yelp to look for a good local seafood spot. To my surprise when I drove to the wharf, I found out it is right at the Jekyll Island club! I parked my car and walked around just a little bit and was absolutely floored by the gilded age mansions the hotel, the landscaping, the palm trees. Honestly words cannot describe how gorgeous that area is. The wharf was a good restaurant. I really liked the coconut Mojito. I got as well as the ceviche for appetizers. I ordered shrimp for my entrée and had a side of macaroni and cheese. This may have easily been the best macaroni and cheese I've ever eaten in my entire life, which is saying a lot because I love macaroni and cheese. The service was OK and I ended up sitting inside because it was windy that evening. I absolutely would recommend this restaurant. It is not too fancy, but it is not a hole in the wall. read more

On night two, we sat out on the deck, overlooking the river & beautiful sunset. Corey was the best server we've had in a long, LONG time! He was very personable, engaging super attentive! This was our second favorite dinner on island. We had excellent service -- even though they were packed. And the food was very, very good. The other plus was that they had my husband's favorite dessert which we also enjoyed. He had a shrimp roll --which although didn't look the best -- was quite good. And I had their wedge salad to which I added fried oysters. This was outstanding. A fresh salad topped with huge creamy oysters that were lightly battered and some of the best I've had in some time. We both were very pleased with what we'd ordered. Then for dessert, we shared their banana pudding. No matter where we go, my husband always asks if they have this on their menu. It's become a standing joke for us -- from a hamburger joint to a steak house. His mom used to make this for him and it's his favorite. So, we were pleasantly surprised to see it on the menu. Of course, we had to order it. It turned out to be an excellent version with a marshamallowy type topping on the creamy pudding with vanilla wafers and lots of fresh banana pieces. We sat inside as it was quite hot, but there's outside seating as well. Plus, they were just setting up the band as we were leaving if that if something you would enjoy. Comes up short... especially for a "resort" restaurant. The food was a letdown. I would liken the taste and quality to a decent fast food restaurant... maybe a rundown Applebees. The restaurant was also dirty. While I understand outside seating being difficult to keep clean, there is no excuse for inside. Our first table was dirty and sticky. We asked to be moved and the second table was no better... it felt like there was adhesive spray applied to the tabletop. The biggest disappoint was that the bar had over-served a number of patrons. They became quite rowdy and were loudly using profanity...on Christmas Eve... in front of a bunch of families... with young children. The staff didn't just fail to address the issue, they continued contributing to it by serving the drunks more alcohol. Bottom line, you'd be better off eating at a chain restaurant in Brunswick. Hubby and I went on Sunday around lunch time and it was such a pretty day to eat out on the dock. It was low tide so it wasn't the prettiest water scenery but the view was still nice. Our servers were so nice and the food was great. My large shrimp basket was amazing and the shrimp had some good seasoning to it. The hubs got a fish basket and the first two were perfectly seasoned and meaty the third was more batter than fish but overall great meals. The Mac and cheese really hit the spot and the key lime pie was scrumptious. I would certainly recommend for date night and I will be going back for the live music on Friday or Saturday. read more

Walking around the historic district we got hungry and decided to try out the warf, which is on the pier. It's decorated in classy nautical theme and very nice on the inside. We were seated quickly for lunch, as they were not busy. It took a good 10 mins for our waitress to arrive which was a bad sign. We quickly got our drinks and then she disappeared again. Another ten minutes and she came back. We ordered the hush puppies, fried green tomatoes, and the pimento cheese. Another person brought them out and they were all very good. I would definitely go back to try dinner instead of just doing appetizers. Regarding the service they were staffed well considering they were not busy. Most of the staff stayed in the back behind a room divider and then would all leave every so often to check tables. We noticed several tables stopping different people to get plates,straws, refills or whatever else they needed. read more

The second dish ordered was shrimp. The shrimp were fried in a light batter and delicious, the hush puppies were excellent, and the slaw ( traded for fries) was a great accompaniment. Our service was great and the view couldn't have been better. We did arrive a bit early and by 6:30 the crowd began to arrive. The catch of the day was Haddock and it was fried to perfection. The batter was light, crunchy, and not greasy at all. I really wasn't prepared for how good it would be! lol My mom ordered the Calabash Shrimp Basket and they were also amazing. I waited to have my pecan pie later and it was worth the wait. I had the opportunity to have lunch at The Wharf yesterday while touring Jekyll Island. I'd read several reviews beforehand, though I tend to take those with a grain of salt. My observations: I loved the setting. Dining alongside the water is always tranquil, and The Wharf certainly lived up to that. Yes, a few birds were eager to "assist" the bus staff with table clearing, but that's to be expected in such a waterfront location. If that's a concern, indoor seating is available -- though on such a beautiful day, eating inside wasn't even a consideration for me. I was greeted and seated immediately (arriving just as the afternoon rush was winding down). My server, Julia, appeared promptly and greeted me warmly. She took my order efficiently, and my drink arrived within moments. My meal followed about ten minutes later -- nicely presented and every bit as flavorful as it looked. The shrimp roll was excellent. The mac and cheese struck a perfect balance -- rich and creamy without being overly cheesy (something I've encountered elsewhere). The green beans were perfectly seasoned, with just the right touch of bacon. Julia checked in often and made sure my sweet tea stayed topped off. The manager, Laura (I believe), was also visible and attentive, stopping by tables to ensure guests were satisfied. All in all, it was a wonderful dining experience. While a bit on the pricey side, the combination of setting, service, and food quality made it well worth it. I'd gladly return. read more
