Open house
Josephine C.

My sister and I went to open house on a Saturday morning in late February. It is located in Valencia in a manufacturing area near Magic Mountain. The husband is one of owners is very nice and waited for 9:30am slotted time. We were given history of how he started and they are only company to make welch cakes outside of Welch. Then we were taken to the small kitchen of where they make the welsh cakes. Next we got to see how the cakes were made and greeted by the wife. Lastly we were given samples and it was delicious and buttery with sample of slotted cheese. It is similar to a scone. The total calories 100 per cake. They used apple sauce and butter in the ingredients. Overall the staff are nice and I purchased several flavors-cinnamon, classic, lemon poppy, etc. FYI, If you check in on yelp, 20% off at the shop.

Tasty, interesting concept. I'd never tried a Welsh Cake before until I found them at the Harvest Festival. The owner offered us samples hot off the "griddle" (they were just warmed up). It was warm, kind of doughy, but like a less greasy scone in texture. Not as flaky either. The best way I can describe it is a cross between a scone and an English muffin, and they are sure to let you know that every one of their cakes is hand-griddled rather than baked, which is cool. At the HF booth, I saw they had other related products like scones, chocolate-covered cakes, and even gluten-free varieties. The prices were also "fan prices" aka cheaper than you'd find online--one package of 4 cakes for $5. I purchased the Chocolate Chip one because I wasn't 100% a fan of the Cherry Almond. I wish I hadn't. The chocolate had a very artificial children's cereal flavor to it from the soy filler. Another way to illustrate the flavor would be if you bought an off-brand package of chocolate chip cookies from the Dollar Tree. The cake did warm up nicely in the microwave and I agree it tastes way better heated up than cold, but the texture of what I purchased was completely off compared to what I sampled at the festival. Mine were dry and stale, and not from being cold. There were parts that were chewy and doughy like I'd expected, but other pockets that were brittle and dried out, like stale bread. There was no reconstituting those parts in the microwave. There was also no expiration date on my package even though the website guarantees every package will have one. So I'm guessing mine was just old, but there's no way of knowing. I love supporting small businesses and was glad I got to try Welsh Cakes, as there aren't many companies on the market. However, I would only repurchase from The Welsh Baker if I could guarantee they cakes were fresh.

We were looking for some treats for my daughters class project/feast and found this family owned bakery. Even tough it is a commercial kitchen without a store front, they welcomed us in, showed us the kitchen and provided us with some history or their product and how they make them. It was wonderful. We got some Welsh Cakes, Scottish Shortbread and Scotch Eggs. Everything was a hit!!! Definitely this is the place to go for traditional and delicious items!

This company is local to us, so we're very lucky. We can't say enough about them. Absolutely delicious. Every flavor is delicious but our favorites are chocolate chip, cinnamon and the brown sugar wheat free. The currant is amazing as well. You'll get addicted like we are!

Good product (welsh cakes). My favorite was the currant flavor. I found it hard to order, it's probably just me. But I would like to suggest an easier way to order on any items from the menu like the scones or the cream without bundling it. People like me are willing to pay premium just so we can customize what we want in our boxes. Thanks for creating quality products. I would like to try the scones next time.

Chocolate Covered Welsh Cake (Purchased at Scottish Festival at the Queen Mary in Long Beach, Ca)

Discovered this company this weekend when my husband & I went to the Scottish Festival at the Queen Mary. When I saw their sign "Welsh Cakes" I was wondering what they were and I am sure so were others because this booth had a few signs with words like 'try a sample' and 'ever wondered what Welsh cakes are?'. Well I have never heard of Welsh cakes before and thought why not and decided to come up to their booth and get a sample. My husband and I got a sample of their cinnamon Welsh cake and also of their currant (kind of taste like raisins) Welsh cake. Both our samples were nice and warm (the best way to eat them) and had a nice soft chew to it. Really these Welsh cakes remind me of a thick pancake (but in a good way). I decided to purchase a 4 pack of the maple pecan and a 4 pack of the cinnamon flavor. There were other flavors to choose from but figured I would go with something of a familiar flavor. For (1) 4 pack of any flavor it cost $4.75. There was a special promotion going on in which if you sign up for their fan club (free to join) they will give you an additional $1 off if you buy 2 of more packs. So my total came out to $8.50. The guy who rang up our order gave us a full size chocolate covered Welsh cake to eat (a new item they are offering, and only 2 chocolate covered Welsh cakes come in a pack instead of 4 and for the price of $4.75). My husband and I really enjoyed these cakes, which didn't have to be warmed and can be consumed right out of the packaging. Anyways, the next day I heated up 2 of the maple pecan Welsh cakes in the microwave for 15-20 seconds (anything longer will burn them... I unfortunately learned that the hard way) and it had a nice flavor. But would have preferred raisins added to this Welsh cake to give it some more texture and added sweetness because the maple flavor was very subtle. The cinnamon Welsh cake is the favorite of the 2 that we bought because it just had the right amount of sweetness. You can eat these Welsh cakes by itself, but really taste even better with some jam (and chocolate doesn't hurt either). My husband wasn't too keen on the sample he had with currants in them, but he isn't much of a raisin type of guy (I didn't get a sample of this). Overall, pretty good and glad I got to try a new food product. I think these Welsh cakes are a bit more than what I want to pay so I probably wouldn't be rushing out to purchase these the next time I see this booth, but they a tasty breakfast treat that one should try at least once in their life time.

I discovered Welsh cakes at the Renaissance Faire last year, but I just found out that I can order these online, so I'll be able to have them anytime I want. They are so good! They are a mix between a scone, cookie, and pancake. They have a sweet sugar powder on top. Heat them up with a little butter and a cup of tea, my favorite kind of treat. So far I've only tried the maple pecan and cranberry orange which are both amazing! But now I'll be ordering each flavor to try.

Where can I buy this other than online and their set up stands ? Are there any markets selling this?

It is divine. Go easy on the salt. Apply garlic. Dress with barbecue spice and throw on hoards of lemon pepper and chili powder. I'm fairly certain they don't make them like this anymore. Stop off at this corn cart and it'll take you to another time... to when flavor was more important than the amount of time it takes to cook a meal.

I searched online and it means Grullense or a person from El Grullo, Jalisco. This time the taco truck is a bit farther from the Ralph's store and just across the Pilot Travel Center/Gas Station. The taco truck parked right in front of two houses and it was a weird spot for the houses to be. Its like Barstow Stop at Lenwood Road to see a house in the middle of nowhere. Oh man, there was a lot of trucks coming and going. I see a lot of truck drivers coming by getting some nice tacos or burritos. I ordered my favorite, Al Pastor Burrito. I believe the price is either $4.15 or $4.25. Also, I ordered a bottle of Mexican Coca-Cola. My total was $5.50. $1 cheap than Tacos Al Vapor, plus they gave me radishes and lemon. Great value!! However, I think I saved the $1 because I got a 355ml Coca-Cola versus the 500ml Pepsi-Cola from Tacos Al Vapor, but they do sell the 500ml...I am just collecting the glass bottles of different kinds. I brought my food back to work and...DAMN, the Al Pastor Burrito was FREAKIN HOT!!. I keep forgetting to tell them...NO CHILE...lol. I looked at my Coca-Cola...and I forgot that it has to be opened with a bottle opener. Good thing that I have a bottle opener in my car...I tried it..and it doesn't fit..AGH!!! Its burning my mouth!!! I had to bend a piece of the metal cap and SUCCESS!!! Damn it was hot. Good thing someone from my work brought tortilla chips so I can soften the heat from my mouth. I was surprised that they put something special in my burrito....PINEAPPLE. It was more delicious than I thought. With the tortilla chips, it was like 3 different meals at once. You can eat the burrito whole, eat it with chips. then eat the tortilla. I asked the guy how long the truck has been there and he said that his truck has been here [Castaic] for awhile. So, I am not sure how long in years, but I am glad the truck is here. The guy is very nice and welcome me to the area. I saw another taco truck down the road. I might try that later. I also really liked that they stay open later than most cafes in the area. They had a huge selection of pastries and baked goods to choose from, although I do wish the prices were a little more affordable. Service was just okay during my visit -- the staff seemed a bit rushed and not very attentive to customers. The food and drinks were still good overall, especially the kimbap croquettes and the matcha latte, which were definitely my favorites! I do think the pastries may have been fresher earlier in the day since some had likely been sitting out for a while by the time I came in. A few items I wanted to try were already sold out, but that just gives me another reason to come back. Overall, I had a great experience and would definitely return to try more of their goodies!

I had a few questions about the different items involved, including. It's customer and person favorites. Taking her recommendation, we grabbed one of the plastic trays and tongs and began filling our cafeteria-style carrying apparatus with such delightful goodies as the last remaining Vanilla Crème Donut, Croquette (only available hot and fresh on Friday and Saturday), and a Spinach Feta Danish. There were tons of enticing goodies displayed in bright cases throughout, but these were the ones that caught our eyes on this visit. We proceeded to the counter to pay for our food and also order our drinks, which included a Basic Bro coffee, and an Iced Honey Lavender Drink with Almond Milk for my girlfriend. There are several comfortable and colorful chairs and tables inside, with attention to a light, bright welcoming seating experience. The drinks weee made within a few minutes and upon picking them up, I noticed the place had grown in customer-size with 95% of the clientele being women on a mission to enjoy pastries together without judgment. The drinks were good. My coffee was not terribly hot, but it had a nice flavor. My girlfriend loved her iced beverage. The Vanilla Crème Donut was amazing! Stuffed full of delicious vanilla bean cream, the pastry makers didn't skimp on the quantity or quality of ingredients. Light, airy and fluffy, this was a hit. Of equal appreciation and fame was the Croquette. A deep fried ball of deliciousness, this divine savory treat reminded me of a meat pie wi to vegetables, deep fried and ready to satisfy. Amazing! The Spinach Feta Danish was just OK in my opinion. The lattice design and putter crispy crust was appealing but the interior ingredients lacked flavor and warmth, despite being reheated by the Tous Les Jours team. Overall, it was a solid experience. The prices were on par with similar types of artisan bakeries (85 Degrees), but the taste was a bit better for the items we selected. There were plenty of other amazing treats that we will no doubt want to try in the future and this experience left us wanting more.
