Stopped in for drinks and dinner before seeing the Lion King next door at the Lyceum. We were really just looking for somewhere with a modicum of cool air movement inside after a long hot day. And thankfully, The Wellington had that. The main floor dining area was chock full but we saw a sign for an upper level dining room. It was empty but we were welcomed and told we could sit wherever we wanted. Service was prompt and friendly. Again, it was one of the family of Nicholson pubs, so the menu was familiar and exactly the same as just about every other pub I had visited in the city. I got a couple small plate/appetizers for my meal...the haloumi fries (YES. YUM.) and the calamari. A brilliant bit of a meal. And then I treated myself with one of the desserts, a blood orange tart that was delightful. The cider flowed cold and often. And again, thankfully...some cool air movement was found so we utterly appreciated our sit-down. Convenient to our theater, good service, good food, and marginal climate control. Loved it! read more

We had our last and most delicious dinner of the entire trip here. Our waiter, Griffin, helped make our experience even more enjoyable. There were seven of us, and we had to make a reservation. We tried to go the night before but it was too busy. Definitely make a reservation! Among the seven of us we had the sausages and mash, rabbit pie, steak and pale ale pie and the brisket and other various meats pie, and a burger. We also tried the halloumi fries and three of their desserts. The pies- top notch. The winners of the night would have to be the rabbit pie and the steak and pale ale pie. The pale ale pie was so rich with flavor. It tasted like the sauce had simmered for days for how full-flavored it was. The rabbit pie was also delicious but maybe not for everyone. Griffin made our kids the country garden drink- no alcohol- and it was so delicious! The halloumi fries we got upon griffins recommendation and they were also really good. Don't skip the sauce on the side. Everyone was pleasantly surprised by the texture and taste. Lastly, the desserts were amazing! The apple and blackberry crumble was so good that I could have had two. They were really sweet but also had a tartness to them that the crumble helped balance out! This was the first bar I moseyed into upon arriving in London. It is right next to the theater that was showing Lion King, so in the early evening it was tough to get a seat inside or outside. This weary tourist, having been awake and on his feet for 26 hours, found himself at the Wellington at the end of his first, and longest day in the United Kingdom. Having no idea (at the time) that this establishment was a part of a larger chain of gastropubs (similar to the McMenamins franchises of the Pacific Northwest, USA), I was initially taken in by the exterior decor, which appealed to me as a fairly authentic British pub. I was also not in a position to argue with my feet or stomach, at the time. That being said, I thoroughly enjoyed my first fish and chips in the UK: a hearty, filling cut atop a bed of slightly overdone "fries" (pardon the American lingo). I would dine on fish and chips several more times during my two weeks in the UK, but the Wellington's offering proved to be above par (although overwhelmingly dethroned by Knight's Fish and Chips in Glastonbury, of all places). Even so, it was exactly what I needed before passing out in a dead slump on top of my hotel bed. If this is the sort of quality that one can expect from a chain restaurant in the UK, then it would be difficult to be disappointed. I came out here for lunch prior to setting off to Kensington Palace in search of some pretty darn good meat pie. Well, I definitely came to the right place! I love this rustic, gorgeous pub with an upper level for a dining room. I felt like I was getting a great London Experience out here. I ordered the steak and ale pie, which came with a side of mashed potatoes and gravy, root vegetables, and gravy boat to pour over everything. The meal hit the spot: it was perfectly hearty and tasty, the pie itself was pretty big. The middle was hot and steaming with the meat and gravy inside, but the outside had a wonderfully flaky crust that I enjoyed immensely breaking apart. The sides were pretty generous in portion, so I definitely did not leave here full. The service was good, stopped in the night before to ask about reservation and they told me to simply fill out my request online the night before, which I did. Another bonus is that they take cash, which helps considering that I came out to London with no inkling that much of central London had gone cashless. Comfy pub that is a little small on the ground floor, though they apparently have more seating and dining room upstairs. There are also quite a few outside tables. Sitting outside if great as there is a great view down Lancaster Place toward Waterloo Bridge. I didn't have anything to eat, but I did enjoy the beer. They have a few taps and bottles of the usual mass produced but there are some guest ales that aren't rare but are at least uncommon. Well poured and not too expensive. Mostly disappointing. We were quickly seated, but after that the server took a very long time to come to the table, and that took because I had to call her. The service was not good at all. We had to call her repeatedly for filling water, the check, etc. Now the food. I ordered something called the amber ale steak and mushroom pie. This was quite good, basically the concept is quite similar to a "chicken pot pie". The filling inside the crust was molten hot and burned the roof of my mouth (can't blame them for that though, I should have been more careful ). My wife and daughter shared their house specials with steak. It was horrible! The steak was un chewable, and the taste was quite gross. The hamburger was pretty mediocre as well. Interesting how two pubs owned by the same corporation two blocks apart can be so different. Like The Coal Hole, this is a Nicholson pub but slower and the staff is much less organized. (And The Coal Hole has it's problems with urgency.) The bartenders were all females this evening and nice, but unable to desk with the number of customers and their quirks. A big difference, I think, is that at least this evening this was the children's bar. Lots of people of borderline drinking age in the bar and on the patio. I waited to order for more than five minutes behind a group of teenagers ordering what seemed to be the second beer on their live. Is there a manager here? The patio is packed with smokers (which is the point of the patio) but there is a table of twelve bringing in booze from outside. They will leave a huge mess and perhaps half was purchased from the bar. The Iron Duke would be appalled. Here's an interesting twist. At last call, they collected all the ashtrays while there were still 41 people (I just counted) smoking on the patio. What do they think is going to happen with the butts now and why do they think it's going to discourage anyone who still has a drink in hand? read more

It's curious, The Wellington. It has all the makings of a good pub, but doesn't seem to quite pull it off. It's in a great location, on The Strand, not far east from Charing Cross and Embankment stations, and there is a large outside sitting area on the corner of the street. Inside, the decor is classical and pleasant with plenty of small tables and space to sit and drink and chat. Upstairs, there is a large dining area and a comprehensive pub menu with very attractive prices. But... I don't know, it's a bit.. clinical. It seems to lack character. I had a tasty bean and sun-dried tomato burger with chunky chips and onion rings, but it felt like I'd had it a thousand times before (I probably have had about that many burgers, but that's not the point). If I'm being blunt, the two signs outside the door advertising fish and chips, one 'from £5.95' and the other, identical picture and description, 'from £6.95' kind of sums it up. I had about 2 hours to kill before my Lion King show, so, I decided to have a pint at the pub next door called The Wellington. One of the things I wanted to do was experience more of the typical English fare besides Fish & chips. This is my first time ordering from an English pub and I learned some very useful tips as I wanted to sit outside in the beautiful sun (though the weather was a it cool). I had to order everything inside the bar and they would deliver it to me outside - sound good enough. I decided to start off with a salad called The London Particular, it was made with pea purée with mint, underneath greens and pulled Ham. Delicious and different, (I'm being honest!). I loved the texture of the peas and how it was the "dressing" for this salad, it was a great mix of savory, salty, and sweet. The main dish was this "English Pie" named 'British Beef and Nicholson's Pale Ale'. I kept reading and hearing about pies from signage from different restaurants and decided to take the leap to try one. I'm glad I did! Crusty, flaky crust, and a molten, hot filling of sliced beef and gravy! WOW! With an extra side of gravy to pour over the mashed potatoes and the al dente vegetables, it was a great combination for a meal. If you're going to see the Lion King at the Lyceum theater, The Wellington Pub is right next door, sit and enjoy a pint of beer and order some great food before your show! This is place is just like any ol' pub you might go to. However, this great thing about this one is that they have a full dining room upstairs if you want to have a quiet dinner without any of the drunks bumping into you. They also have an outdoor area that they keep open even on the coldest of days if you just want to have a beer, sit outside, and people-watch. On this particular day, I went upstairs to eat. Before I start, I'd like to say that the host was very nice and even led me upstairs so I could eat. However, the waitress I got had no interest in serving me at all. Then when I finally got her attention, I asked her what she'd suggest off of the menu. She said, "Well, I don't know what you'd like." I thought to myself, "If I knew what I liked, I wouldn't be asking you for suggestions!" Anyway, she did finally get a little more hospitable towards the end of the meal. The meal was delicious. I got a Cumberland Sausage Sandwich on early meals section of the menu (offered till 5pm). A friend got breakfast for lunch! Anyhow, my sandwich was delicious! I used to come here abit when I was a student, and I have mix views on this place. Although the beer is cheap as chips... like £2.90 a pint which considering the area is almost Spoons prices, I have found the service to be rather off hand some days. The staff seem to be rather slack at creating a homely environment, they can be slow with the orders and ( once even gave us the wrong receipt) but also cold and slightly off hand. Came here with my husband for the Sunday roast. I ordered the lamb shank roast even though I wanted the chicken. The restaurant had run out of chicken and the vegetarian roast so I has no choice but to choose either the beef or lamb roast. The Yorkshire pudding, lamb, and vegetables were delish! My husband ordered the fish and chips and mentioned that it was the best fish and chips he had! We both ordered beers. I got the Stella black which was amazing and not to mention one of wellington's draft beers. My husband ordered the Nicholson's pale ale which he wasn't very fond of. I'm not a huge fan of the typical mass touristy pubs in London but I felt this one was pretty solid. The building and interior were unique and the service was very good. Finally a London restaurant that earned its 'optional' service charge. I had fish and chips and it was delicious even with the high standards I hold English venues to. My dinner partner in crime had some great pot pie goodness and she was also a happy camper. We pigged out on a dessert sampler plate and each of the brownie + lemon tart + ice cream plate was great.
