Very busy pub in a very touristy area. I only stopped for a drink and was very quickly served. The staff were great at helping to direct folks to empty tables (even though there were few). And the several plates of fish and chips that passed me smelled delicious! If you're looking for a quick bite in between tours or sightseeing, this may be a great spot to stop. As soon as we entered the hostess told us they were full and to leave, they weren't serving us. My husband was inside and another person, Vanessa, seated us. She was absolutely wonderful. If it wasn't for Vanessa, we definitely would have left. We asked if my elderly mother could use the downstairs, disabled, 1st floor restroom, and another lady that was working at the bar told her absolutely not, yet she let another lady in with her baby. She told my mom to go upstairs. They were steep stairs and quite a few. Another employee was coming out of the restroom and saw my mom struggling and said we could've used the restroom downstairs and I told her they wouldn't let us use it. The food was descent. Really nice space and tasty food! The service is very easy. Pick your seat, go to the car to order and checkout, and then they bring the food to your table. You can sit downstairs where it's a little more lively, or you can go upstairs where it's a little quieter and cozy. We sat upstairs and it was a very nice vibe. The desserts were amazing. Sticky toffee pudding, and raspberry panna cotta. The panna cotta was our favorite. For the meal, I got the fish cake with a poached egg on top. It was very tasty, and the egg was poached so well. This is such a fun place to eat. We sat downstairs and the staff were really entertaining. I ordered our food at the bar. The guy let me sample a couple draft beers because I could not decide on one based off the descriptions. I was surprised some of the beers are served at room temperature. This is normal for these beers. I love my beers ice cold so I knew I would not want a beer from that group. The beer I chose was very good, a nice IPA. We each ordered fish and chips. It comes with mushy peas. An interesting combination. This is a theme all over London. The fish was cooked just right and the fries were delicious. A delicious dinner/drink stop near Trafalgar Square! We were lucky to be able to get a table here on our last night in London. The area was very busy on a Tuesday night, so this was, admittedly, our second or third stop, but felt like it was meant to be as soon as we got our hands on a menu! We were a group of 5, so, to start, we ordered the ploughman's lunch, which is like an ultimate sharing board with all kinds of fun staple foods on it like scotch egg, a sausage roll, ham, etc. - all the foods you MUST try when visiting England including Branston pickle (love it or hate it, it's a must try!). All of the food that we had was absolutely amazing. I had the potato & leak pie for my entree and cannot recommend it highly enough. The setup of this restaurant is pretty standard in comparison to other pubs/restaurants in the area in that it's very clean and pleasant. Our waitress was the highlight of our evening. She was so busy, but still kind and chatty. They had a large party coming in at 8, so she asked that we put our order in by 8 so that she could make sure ours was priority. She did a great job checking up on us and making sure we always had full drinks and everything that we needed. read more

Delicious food, friendly service. We walked in a few minutes before the kitchen closed (at 8pm Saturday) and it worked out just fine. Split the smoked mackerel starter with sourdough, the spread light and tasty, just right with capers and such. Also split the chicken and mushroom pie, loaded with chunks of chicken and mushrooms, with a perfect gravy on mashed potatoes. Along with the apple & berry crumble (which I meant to split evenly...) it has to be one of the best British meals I've had. The crumble is different fm American versions, more fine and crunchy, I like it. I'm not a beer or wine drinker, but my pal was offered a beer tasting when he asked for a recommendation. Then the guy came back saying the keg was dry and offered another type of beer to test. The first was worth waiting for, and 20 mins later it was ready. A people who take beer seriously. The beer was lovely. But there I left a present for my pregnant wife. Half an hour after I left it, I went back and asked the staff, but they replied that they had never seen it. Then I saw a male employee next to me secretly laughing. Of course, I can't be sure that I'm suspicious. However, it wasn't easy to get rid of my doubts when I saw the staff shouting no at first sight and the staff laughing secretly around me as soon as I asked. They told me to be careful of pickpockets in the UK, but I think the staff at the local restaurant should also be careful. I want to tell everyone who goes here to be careful of things. read more

The Clarence is a beautiful old pub, both inside and out. They have an extensive choice of beer and wine. The food is excellent with some typical pub fare and other chef Innovation. 18th-century pub with wooden floors, framed prints and old-world upstairs dining room. We had a private function upstairs and I was looking forward to it as it's one of the few free houses in London. Unfortunately they had run out of hand drawn draught beer and that was a disappointment as we were left with bottle choices and other run of the mill beers on tap :-( The interior is really nice here and I would like to come back once again before I review it properly. I stumbled across this cool little pub after walking around Londontown for hours on end one weekend. Located just a few blocks south of Trafalgar Square, I decided to go in based on the fact that it has a Derby hat on the sign out front and looked really inviting inside. It was also fairly bustling, which was a good sign. It's a part of the Geronimo group of pubs, which seem to have a good thing going for them in that they mix old world pub charm with a bit of modern/hip cool factor. They have a simple menu that features both traditional pub fare and something a little more modern - not many pubs serve hoummous or Pastrami sandwiches. The first time I went there, I nestled myself into a corner table w/ my kindle, ordered an ale & some chips, and spent a few content hours just enjoying the moment. The next time around I brought my father in, who was visiting me from overseas, and we had a traditional roast for dinner. It was good, but not amazing - lacked a bit of flavor, but my north american palate found that to bet he case for most British cuisine, so I don't hold it against them! The portions were very generous and the prices were reasonable. If they had a pub like this where I live (Washington, DC), i'd surely be a regular. Highly recommend this place to anyone looking for something other than a Nicholson or Fuller's-owned pub. read more

Came on a Saturday for lunch on way to Big Ben, Parliament, etc. Ordered one of the specials -- Geronimo Fishcakes and Handcut Chips -- I'm guessing a derivative of standard fish and chips. Also had a delightful warm mulled cider. Waiter was super friendly, which was a nice surprise. Overall, I suspect I'm overpaying due to proximity to major tourist attractions. I've been to London before but decided on the fish & chips. On the plus side, it was a very fresh piece of white fish with an ample, golden fried batter coating. So we stopped in with a group of 10 people. One of us was an 11 year old that just wanted some McDonalds. The staff made him leave even though we'd ordered drinks and food for everyone else. They wouldn't allow my son a bag of McDonalds. He then sat outside the the front door on the ground with his food where I could see him. And they refused to allow him to eat there either. It wasn't until things got REALLY argumentative that they said if he was eating off one of their plates that they would allow it. RIDICULOUS. He is just a kid! This is a pub i would avoid at all costs, the meals are on the budget size which makes the menu look good. I was tempted and fooled i ordered two meals one for my partner and myself, we waited and waited half hour after ordering are meals arrived to the table only to find out they were served stone cold. I Put a complaint in about this and they were hurriedly taken away and warmed up, there no real apologies for this. My partners meal included toast which was found to be toasted on just one side, the tables were filthy as though they had not been cleaned since they opened in the morning.
