    11/04/10 - Atreyu

I've seen two shows here: Motion City Soundtrack and Atreyu. Ticket prices are reasonable, $20 for both shows that I saw. It's in a sketchball neighborhood, but there's not many shady people hanging around (if that makes any sense whatsoever) The venue is on the small-ish side, which is a good thing...sometimes you can meet members of the band. The bathrooms are ghetto and beat up, but for being where it is, the venue as a whole is quite nice. Yes, the security people can be pricks...I got "warned" for taking video on my phone...except I was just taking pictures...but if they weren't there, things would be out of control.

Great venue in Hartford for rock and punk shows. Local and national acts. Sound quality is really good, loud but almost never too loud. It's an all-ages venue most of the time, with a separate area for 21+ folks to drink and watch the show. This venue is connected to the Webster Underground, which often acts as a side stage for larger shows but also puts on its own smaller concerts. Parking is available in the lot behind the Webster, usually for $5. There's also lots of free on-street parking in the neighborhoods surrounding, but be warned: this is not the safest neighborhood.

I've been here apparently several times, but this may have been my first in the underground and not the main room itself. It was... Okay. I'm also 29 and not the young person who could handle all these concerts. I came home with several unknown bruises, and I avoided the mosh pit at all costs. I did appreciate the intimate setting of the venue to be able to see a band so close up and get some great pictures of them. However that also means I'm very intimate with my fellow concert goers, many of whom could learn about deoderant and soap. I started on the left side of the room, and after feeling trapped by the mosh pit, made it to the right side of the room where I discovered the very open bar area where I could actually breathe. I also discovered the area where the band enters the stage, and proceeded to stand there all night to watch the concert. Also - since I only brought a debit card and the ATM machine inside the place was not working, I figured the bar would take cards. I was correct, was able to purchase a water ($3.50) but then got my second water for free so that was awesome :). I think most people that go here appreciate what the venue does - brings music at a cheaper cost and at an intimate venue. It needs air conditioning or passing out of free deoderant when people enter, but other than that, it was definitely a great time!

The staff was incredibly friendly and attentive throughout our visit. One thing that really stood out is that Uchu has three different rooms, each offering its own vibe. One room is a traditional restaurant setting, perfect for a more upscale dining experience. Another gives off cozy bakery vibes, and the third feels like a lounge or party scene with great music and tasteful strobe lighting. It's such a unique concept because you truly get to choose the atmosphere you want. One of the owners, Matin, seated us and was extremely kind and welcoming. He explained that the name Uchu comes from a Peruvian word/dialect meaning spice, which perfectly represents their Peruvian-inspired menu. We started with a passion fruit pisco pitcher, and it was absolutely delicious. It was lightly blended with ice--not frozen, but not exactly on the rocks either. It had the perfect balance of sweetness without being overpowering, and it masked the alcohol so well that it was dangerously smooth. For my entrée, I ordered the Churrasco a la Parrilla, which came with fries, white rice, and a salad. The steak was incredibly juicy, tender, and full of flavor--I could literally cut it with a butter knife. For dessert, I had the leche asada, which was similar to flan and served with whipped cream and fresh fruit. It was the perfect way to end the meal. Uchu is truly perfect for any occasion--whether you're planning a date night, celebrating a birthday, or getting together with friends. What really sets this place apart is the ability to choose your vibe while still receiving the same high-quality food and service in every room. Lastly, the staff deserves special recognition. They were extremely attentive, something that feels rare in restaurants nowadays, especially in the post-COVID era. I will definitely be back, and I highly encourage everyone to check this place out. There's one long room, almost a hallway, with two larger rooms off of it. One of the rooms had a bar set up. It's very hipster-feeling with exposed brick and (being an old factory) super tall ceilings. The two bathrooms are kinda sketchy -- basically lean-to's with somewhat untrustworthy locks. It's a bit of a strange set-up for a party, since I'm not sure where you'd really seat people unless it was a small party. Parking is nice, with a huge lot across the street, and there's a brewery right next door, which is definitely a perk.

The process to get inside is a bit disorganized, but everyone is doing their best. The acoustics are nice. The challenges are far more plentiful. The stage is unusually high - which means the front row is likely incredibly uncomfortable with kinked necks unless they stand the entire show. The seats are unbelievably close to each other - so much so that we saw people forfeit their seats because they couldn't fit into the row. If someone needs to exit the row, everyone must get up and move out of the row due to limited room. (Men- do not stand and make women slide past you. That's gross.) A little more effort could go into the experience, for instance, there was very little room at the stage for people to dance during The English Beat. I think it's important for any theatre to understand who they're hosting and how the crowd enjoys the music. Overall, the performance was great, but the theatre could use some adjusting. I wouldn't return unless it was a must see.
