The theater is pretty small- maybe 150 seats? The seats are comfy The theater has a bar inside ( $6-$8 for beer, wine, and cocktails) You are so close to the stage, its incredible Every staff person we interacted with was terrific- smiling, friendly, helpful, pleasant as can be. On Opening Nights there is a reception with food and drinks - FOR FREE We went last night to see Debra Jo Rupp (The mom in That 70's show) perform a one woman show about the life of Dr. Ruth Westheimer. It was stellar - a tremendous 90 minute monologue that ran the gamut from funny to tragic. Not only was the Dr. Ruth on the stage terrific, but we also saw that the real Dr. Ruth was there -smiling, greeting people and signing her books to benefit Theaterworks. It was a very fun evening, and I was really impressed by how nice Theaterworks was. read more

Great place. Been a subscriber for nearly 25 years and its amazing what they've done. From a rented,hot, plastic chair space to now owning the building, providing art show space and a link with the New Britain museum and with a nice cafe and now adding subscriber parking! Oh and all the while proving first rate theater with a variety of performances from broadway as well as some of their own material which has moved to broadway! Well done. read more

I love coming to this theater. There is not a bad show I have seen and not a bad seat I have sat in. The staff are always helpful in helping me find my way to my seat despite its size. The concession is priced reasonably and never has long lines. My last play was Hand to God which had me laughing so hard. The play before that was Sunset Baby and I was beyond impressed with the performances. My favorite time to buy tickets is the very last show or the matinee on the day of the very last show. The actors seems to give better performances since it is the finale. Also, there is easy parking because it is the weekend in Hartford and no one is there. For Hand to God I literally parked out in front of the entrance doors. I love coming here and look forward to a play that piques my interests every season. read more

I don't know why I have not found my way to Theaterworks in the past. I've only recently seen a play and I've been missing out. I went to see The River which included a total of 4 actors. It was amazing and the best theater experience I've ever had. What I love is that the the theater is very intimate. All seats are amazing and it feels like you are part of the show. The staff are very personable and passionate about live theater. They are about to do a makeover of the facility and I can't wait to see how it turns out. I'll be back for Christmas on the Rocks and I know it will be an amazing experience. read more

Amazing venue for plays - very intimate setting- no "bad seats". All of the staff is quite personable and friendly. Theater has convenient location with plenty of parking around theater, as well being close to many fine downtown Hartford restaurants. One caveat - is that you have to walk down a fairly long set of stairs to get to the theater itself. Most recent play offered - Midsummer - was terrific- very creative and clever- combining music, dialogue, with a great story line- reality including the pathos and humor of reality. The two actors in the play, Rebecca Hart, M.Scott McLean, under direction of Tracy Brigden, were very engaging -in tune with their characters as well as the audience, making the play more of a personal storytelling.The play was 97 minutes long which seems like a long time for only two actors considering the dancing, music, dialogue changes of characters held me enthralled by their skill. The original music by playwrights, David Grieg and Gordon McIntyre weaved though out the play and in context of story line. read more

I love seeing live theater. I recently attended my first performance at TheaterWorks. When I made it down the stairs and walked into the space I had a moment where I felt like I was in New York City and going to an off-off Broadway performance. As I looked around I felt some good theater vibes. I was in a space where I could see people who were just as passionate about the theater as me. The set design for Two Rivers is amazing. TheaterWorks has a dynamic lineup of plays written and directed by seasoned and upcoming theater professionals. I saw my first play and it won't be my last. read more

TheaterWorks has quickly become one of my favorite venues for theater, and it's not just because they happen to have put on two amazing shows that I've seen, but also because the aura of the theater is one of professionalism with a casual flare. I've seen two shows here -- The Seafarer and Dead Man's Cellphone -- and both were outstanding. Both shows were completely different, and the set reflected the company's ability to really build an accommodating scene. It's a clean, classy theater, and the options of snacks (Ben and Jerry's, food and drinks from a wine place around the corner) and coffee beverages (get the mocha!) are delicious, too. The staff is always friendly and courteous, and I recommend that if you want to start doing the theater circuit, you start here! read more

I attended Theater Works for the first time about a month ago. There were a bunch of local community theaters that participated in a program called "Free Night of Theater" where you could get free tickets to a show, as long as you had never been there to see that group before. I decided since I have worked right down the road from Theater Works for so song, I might as well finally check them out. Me and my girlfriend decided to make a night of it and started at dinner at Hot Tomato's. We then walked back over to the theater and saw their show "The Seafarer" which neither of us had heard of. We were so impressed with it, and how quickly the time flew while watching it. The sets were very well done, and the casting was perfect. During intermission they had a delicious coffee bar with wonderful cafe mocca's and other coffee drinks. We had such a wonderful evening we signed up to be season ticket holders there next year!! They only warning I have is they do more edgy type shows, so if you are offended easily, this might not be the group for you, look more into a group like the Little Theatre of Manchester. read more

I Loved, I Lost, I Made Spaghetti. This is a one woman show - actress Antoinette Lavecchia plays the author (Giulia Melucci) of the book titled "I Loved, I Lost, I Made Spaghetti".. She recounts many of her encounters while dating from adolescence through adulthood. She does this while cooking for around ten lucky audience members. She prepared antipasto salad and served it with bread, followed by a delicious salad, and finally homemade pasta and sauce. We watched while she piled flour on the counter, hollowed out a recess in the flour and cracked some eggs into the recess. She was speaking with us the entire time, she sprinkled water into the flour and kneaded it. She set it aside. Later we were treated to the rest of the process as though we were guests in her kitchen and she was recounting stories while preparing food. We had a very enjoyable time and the people we were with thought the show was excellent as well. The pasta was very well prepared and delicious. I don't know if it was because we watched the food being prepared and the anticipation made it that much better or if it was just great pasta, but I doubt I have ever enjoyed pasta more anywhere. The sauce was well prepared as well and this was done from canned tomatoes during the presentation as well. I cannot recommend this show enough. I will say, that if you are not one of the fortunate who is willing to sit up front and enjoy the product of the show, I recommend you dine immediately before. Otherwise you will surely get hungry watching all this wonderful food be prepared and consumed. Antoinette has been doing this show 7 times a week for 5 weeks. I believe she is only around for another week and a half. If you have a fellow foodie... Call them up and do what you have to do to get one of the seats in the show. You will not feel awkward, you will be entirely engaged in the show and you will have a wonderful time. read more

This place is awesome! It's a little theater in Hartford that plays a variety of shows. I just saw Christmas on the Rocks and it was AMAZING. It was so fun and I laughed so hard. I happened to be here on an LGBT evening so there were appetizers after the show. The theater is great and I totally recommend going. Small, intimate theatre setting. A great way to experience the arts. Ticket options are reserved or general admission. With general admission you come in and choose your own seats from what's available outside of already reserved seats. Come early for the best pick of seats. Coming late like we did, our party of four was split up. Of the general admission seats there are several that have an obstructed view. Staff is attentive and helpful. All shows I've seen here have been remarkable. read more

This theater is literally a "hole in the wall", but it is a gem for a serious theater goer. It is in the basement of an office building and, as you might it expect it is small. The selection of productions is diverse. You will experience everything from musicals to experimental drama. The quality of the work is excellent. The theater is planning a renovation for the spring of 2019 to upgrade the seating, bathroom facilities and dressing rooms for the actors. They will also put in a better elevator for the patrons with walking issues. This is clearly a theater that you should take a serious look at. I do not think that you will be disappointed. read more

Our friends introduced us to this amazing place tucked away in Hartford. Tiny theater with the most amazing productions! My husband and I love the theater and we travel to NYC of course but throughout CT for some of the best entertainment. We can honestly say that this venue is the BEST! Next to Normal blew us away. A musical on this tiny stage? How can this be? Well, it was wonderful. We are now subscribers and are looking forward to going to the next production. This place is a gem! read more

This is a great small theater. There really isn't a bad seat in the house, however unless you have reserved seats you will rarely be sitting in the "premium" spots. We have seen multiple plays here and always enjoy the intimate setting. Highly recommended! read more

I can't say I've ever been let down by a show here, but I have to knock off a couple stars because of TheaterWorks' appalling reservation system, or lack of one. I'm not sure if the intent of is to make the theater experience more "intimate" by requiring patrons to phone for tickets (no online ticketing), but adding insult to inconvenience is no reserved seating, effectively forcing patrons to fight for their seats. Who wants to show up an hour early just to claim a seat? It's true there's hardly a bad seat in the place, but it's still really inane. read more
