Tick tock, and my watch stopped. Brought in my vintage Cartier du Must watch that hasn't ticked for 15 years. Thought it was a goner, but Matthew fixed it, and replaced the crystal; looks like new. Be patient, wait, and good things will come, even at a price, but what's cheap these days. Brought in my Cartier for a quick fix. Didn't even look at it and said they don't touch Cartier watches. No explanation or examination at all. I thought "Matt specializes in watches and clocks and works on anything that goes tick-tock!" as per their website. Not more than a one sentence interaction so don't have much to say other than don't bring your Cartier here because they won't even look at it. read more

I just found The Watch Pocket, through Yelp today. Took in my Swiss Army watch I thought was toast, and lost. He put in a new battery, extended the pins a bit so it was looser. Stopped in yesterday to see if the owners could try to repair the small band of my Baby G watch to secure it around my wrist as it had fallen off. Unfortunately, they were unable to find a replacement but still provided a small band for me to use. Although I was a bit disappointed, they did a great job addressing my needs and implementing people to wear masks when coming in. Also just an update, their hours on Yelp are inaccurate and they actually close at 4 PM! read more

Matthew has the knowledge to repair wristwatches, pocket watches, clocks of all kinds, Grandfather clocks, mantle clocks, and just about anything that ticks. He's told me not to put money into fixing a pocket watch I believed had some value. It didn't, and had no sentimental value. Thankfully I listened to him. They are amazing. I took 4 watched in for new batteries, 2 not running wrist watches (vintage), a mantel clock that was a wedding gift to my Grandparents in 1900, and a Howard miller wall clock from the 1970's. They told me they could replace the batteries while I waited which was fine. Even though Matt told me the big clocks may not be ready till Spring, I was able to pick them up last week. The wrist watches were ready as well. So far the clocks are all keeping excellent time. I have had some watches and clocks serviced by The Watch Pocket before and will continue to use them. Fantastic service from a family owned, local business. They changed my watch battery in about 2 minutes. Their prices were also very reasonable! They also offer jewelry and watch repair and have a few pieces for sale. Super happy with my experience and will be back. I do not think the owners know us but we have been going to this shop for the last 8 years. My Seiko Divers watch (attached picture) was resurrected by their craftsmanship. It took 1-2 weeks for repair but it was worth the wait. We always bring my wife's Swiss-made watch for battery replacement - we can save a lot of money - if we go to the flagship shop in Chevy Chase, they would charge inexplicable amount of money. Great experience and good prices. Just dropped in to get a watch battery replaced and a band rivet inserted. Took about 10 minutes. The store front is not visible from the front parking lot. It's in the walkway in the center of the building. read more

STOP going to any other watch repair shop. This is the place to come for your watch maintenance. The service is fast, with honest pricing. You also will receive honest communication about your timepiece. Good or bad, it is nice to understand any possible limitations in the movement or in finding secondary straps. I have never been into the store despite living in then Four Corner's area for the past 10 years. I stopped in to have the links removed in a watch (10$ which I think is very reasonable). They were efficient, and professional. They clearly are very knowledgeable in this field. The store is nothing fancy, but they do everything watch and pocket watch related. Despite it being in the middle of the afternoon on a week day, 5 customers came in while I was there. They are clearly respected and known for their field. They also sell a variety of watches as well. read more

I have been taken my watches and clocks to 'The Watch Pocket' for at least the last half dozen years. I always get great service, swiftly, and at reasonable prices. They also have a nice selection of jewelry and I bought for my spouse a sapphire there for Valentine's Day that she wore for weeks she liked it so much. They are a family run business and I feel that by bringing my business to them I help keep funds within the local community. So I dropped in unannounced with a simple fix. The strap pin on my trusty Seiko literally disintegrated and I needed a replacement. I am not exaggerating in saying that I didn't even have time to start browsing their watch selection before they handed it back to me! Again, I understand it was a simple fix but that was ridiculously fast and you'd be surprised at how other watch repair shops move like a sloth. Thanks guys! OK, so they've passed this test with flying colors! I have a more expensive repair of an old Omega to test them with. In the meantime, I definitely recommend The Watch Pocket! read more

We have been in business for 50 years and service watches of all values both modern and antique. When a watch isn't running properly there could be one or more contributing factors. For example,stress on the mechanism due to years of constant use, rust, dirt or worn and broken internal pieces. History

Established in 1970.

The Watch Pocket Jewelers at Four Corners in the Woodmoor Shopping Center Silver Spring, MD was opened in 1970 by John Stohlman Sr. John tinkered with time pieces as a teenager and maintained his enthusiasm for many years. After serving in the Korean War, he began to teach himself the trade and on the GI bill attended a Watchmaker's school in PA. Prior to opening the Watch Pocket he owned 2 other shops in D.C. and Damascus, MD. In the late 80's, his son Matthew began working along side his Dad. After what was suppose to be a part time apprenticeship, some 30 years later you will still find Matt behind the watchmakers bench as the current owner. Matthew's nephew, Eugene Stohlman, decided to take up the family business in 2013 and went to watch making school in Quincy, Illinois. Today we continue our family tradition of quality work, and excellent customer service that started 50 years ago!

Meet the Business Owner: Matthew S.

As a young boy I came to work with my Dad. During college and between jobs I started coming back and actually sitting at the bench. He taught me everything I know. I even attended the same Watchmakers school. I started working here officially in 1994 and took over the business from my father in 1999. We have been in the same shopping center since 1970. In 2013 I hired my nephew, Eugene Stohlman, and sent him to watch making school where he graduated with a degree in Clock and Watch making. We are continuing the family tradition of superior watch and clock repair and customer service.

I would give them zero stars if that was an option…read more They destroyed my platinum and diamond ring. I stated very clearly and emphatically that I did not want my rings cut. I just wanted the retentive beads added back to the intaglio surface to help prevent my rings from rotating. I had previously had the retention beads but had Greenan remove the beads when I gained weight. W. Greenan even placed a drawing of what I wanted on the envelope. They got so focused on the size of the ring instead of my desire to JUST add the beads (like I had before). What did they do? They cut my rings. :-( Now, the diamond setting is so heavy because the cut (replaced) band is so much lighter it can't counter the weight of the setting. So now my diamond rotates worse than before and stays in the palm of my hand. I have used Greenan and Sons for the past 20 years for all my fine jewelry needs. I even sent friends to them for their engagement rings. Disappointment doesn't adequately describe how I feel right now. When I pointed out my concerns, nothing but rationalizations and talk about size again. Walt Greenan argued with me and stated that he called to get my approval when he did not. He called to say the rings were ready for pick up. If he had NOT gone on ad nauseum about his foot/boot and Thanksgiving with his family that included his ex, he would have heard and understood my request, his customer's request. I thought I could have a more rational conversation with the younger Greenan who was in the store when I brought my rings in and also heard my request for my rings not to be cut. I pointed out that the weight of the engagement ring was grossly different. The band had been cut, and the rings prongs and band had been overly polished so that the prongs had been burnished and the ornate scribing of the band had been completely removed. He, too, was a hot head. He also went on to state that the ring had to be cut to be sized. I DID NOT ASK for the RING to be SIZED. I asked for the beads to be added. He handed my rings back to me. He stated he wasn't going to argue with me and marched off. All I asked for were for the retentive beads to be added to my rings, nothing else. I am thankful I have 2 previous appraisals with photos for my next steps. Greenan and Sons are not what they used to be, not in customer service and not in craftsmanship.

They did not call us back to inform us that the repair was completed until today. When I looked at the strand of pearls one was the wrong size and the wrong color the other was the wrong color. When we took them back to the store to point out that there was an issue before we even finished the sentence the guy at the store Walter completely lost his cool. He was shouting at us saying that they didn't do anything to our jewelry and escalated the situation far more than it should have been. My daughter attempted to tell him that this was the second piece of jewelry that they have damaged (the other was her promise ring) he waved her off, spoke over her and said "well I don't know about that". He proceeded to say something about "you people" which is concerning. Walter also called us "disgusting" and began to twist whatever we said into the most absurd thing he could think of. For example I said "there's more than one way to skin a cat" to my daughter when she began to get visibly upset by Walter's actions and words and his response was to shout "oh so now I'm a rat and you're going to skin me, so you're threatening me". After this he started getting more and more angry when we tried to reiterate that these pearls were matched to each other and he began to slam things on the counter, he snatched the pearls from my daughters hands and when she took them back from him, he marched behind the stand, picked up the phone and threatened to call the police. At that point we left the store and called the other location as that's where the owner is. We spoke to a nice gentleman at that location and told him all that had happened. This gentleman's first response to the name Walter was "oh god". When we finished the story and told him about Walter calling us "you people" and we raised the question on whether he is a bigot or a sexist he said "well Walter has an antiquated view of women". Take of that as you will. I plan on never coming here again, in addition I don't think you should either as at the very least this manager is a sexist with anger issues. With his mannerisms I felt as though if there hadn't have been a display between us I would have been struck.

Best of all is the selection of "Rolex" products on hand: they have various models, years, and designs and at a mere 30-35% above the AD's new MSRP! As ridiculous as that sounds, it can ve extremely tempting when considering the current gray market prices. When entering a business that is asking only 30% MSRP, it easily becomes a viable option (30% is actually on the low end currently). While making my purchase, the seller informed me that Rolex does not keep time very well. This statement should have set off red flags, but unfortunately, it did not at the time. I purchased an extremely well-made Rolex Submariner that was only a couple of years old and still was under warranty according to the certified card included. I was filled with joy. However, that ended when the watch was losing over 20 seconds s a day. I simply dropped the watch off at an authorized dealer for repair in Tysons. I was quoted a jaw-dropping 12-16 week turnaround for the repair. As discouraging as it was to spend thousands of dollars and need repair within a week of purchase, I wanted the quality that I invested in, so off it went. Feeling confident, I left with an empty wrist and voucher. Several weeks later, I received a call from the dealer informing me that my watch was ready for pickup. However, nothing was done as a result of the watch not being authentic. The Rolex Submariner watch. I was sold a FAKE ROLEX! When I inquired what the issue was, the dealer informed me I would need to contact Rolex directly to find out the details. At this point, thousands of dollars were dumped down the drain! My dream watch scenario was quickly morphing into a nightmare situation. Disappointment and shock would be an understatement of the decade! It was equally interesting that the authorized dealer that I brought the watch to wasn't able to tell the item was unauthentic initially. To be exact- a congratulations on my purchase was originally offered only amplifying the sting further. Rolex informed me that the watch was fake and that the Serial Number did not exist in their records. The certified card had all matching information and appropriate markings needed; details discovered during my research. After conducting hours of research and feeling confident about the sellers reputation, I made my purchase, only to be bamboozled in the end. I had become a victim of fraud! A 10-15 year prison sentence at stake I went to return the fake I purchased weeks before. When I entered, the seller claimed not to remember me or the original transaction - more salt I'm the wound. I demanded my money back as I recalled the details of my experience. The owner casually stated, "Of course I'll return the money for your purchase," as he feined shock that the item was fake. In the end, I was sold an extrenely well made high-end clone (1:1 available online). He further explained that he received the watch on trade by a trusted return customer that he would need to "have a talk with." My overall experience was absolutely traumatizing. The transaction was horrible and I would not recommend conducting business with the Diamond Exchange when purchasing a Rolex line product unless of course you are willing to spin the wheel and become another mark to pad the pockets of shady business practices. Simply having a store front does not make you reputable. It is integrity and business practices those of which are clearly lacking at the Diamond Exchange.

Upon reading his other yelp reviews, and their professionalism when dealing with us the first time, we decided Atlantic Gems was the jeweler to trust. Even with the Thanksgiving holiday, I received the ring back in just a little over a week, and I couldn't be happier with the results. I will definitely be back for all jewelry repair, resetting and resizing needs for years to come. Not only do I give them 5 stars, but so does my dad (a tough customer in Michigan)!

I just joined Yelp so I could endorse this place. It is the best damn watch service shop in the D.C. area -- and I've checked out many. The watchmakers here are extremely knowledgeable, experienced, and friendly. Their prices are very reasonable -- other area watchmakers want 2X-3X more money to service mechanical watches. The 60-year-old wristwatch they serviced for me two years ago is still running strong today and winds "like buttah." They said it would be ready in 10 days but it took like 5 days. The final price was exactly what I was quoted when I dropped it off. That's the complete opposite of what I have experienced with other watchmakers, who left me waiting weeks or months beyond their estimated completion dates. I just dropped off two more vintage mechanical watches for service on Saturday. In talking with Matt, he was clearly familiar with their construction and how to properly service them. I have full confidence that they will come back in terrific shape. I have recommended Watch Pocket to all of my watch nerd buddies and, at the risk of making them too popular, I fully recommend them here. The only negative I can even come up with is that the strip mall parking lot is way too small and always gridlocked. read more

When my Rolex watch started to lose a few minutes a day it surprised me. I've had it over 40 years and that was a first. Took it to The Watch Pocket. It seems several parts were broken and moisture had gotten into the watch. Parts had to be ordered (and my watch is an older model). I was happy with the repair. It was expensive but I anticipated it would be. Matthew, the owner, knows what he is doing and he's honest. My watch also needed to be cleaned. This was the 3rd or 4th time since I've owned it that it had to be cleaned and the first time I felt the fee was honest. A previous cleaning was done by a so-called friend (from childhood) who had sub-contracted the cleaning and repair, charged me a fortune, and replaced the broken stem with the wrong part. This watch shop does good work -- they sell and repair watches and generally do a great job. However, the gentleman who works there can be a bit grouchy at times. Once, I brought in my watch for repair, and when he opened it, he realized it was a solar watch. He got upset that I had taken it there, even though I didn't know they couldn't fix that kind. His reaction made me feel a bit uncomfortable and embarrassed. The service quality is good, but the customer interaction could definitely be friendlier. read more

I've Known Matt for several years. My Dad had him keep his tall clock going and has repaired several antique family clocks. He's honest and straight forward in what he does. He does jewelry as well as clocks and I have had him make, repair and restore favorite pieces. I would 100% recommend him. read more
