I would give them zero stars if that was an option. They destroyed my platinum and diamond ring. I stated very clearly and emphatically that I did not want my rings cut. I just wanted the retentive beads added back to the intaglio surface to help prevent my rings from rotating. I had previously had the retention beads but had Greenan remove the beads when I gained weight. W. Greenan even placed a drawing of what I wanted on the envelope. They got so focused on the size of the ring instead of my desire to JUST add the beads (like I had before). What did they do? They cut my rings. :-( Now, the diamond setting is so heavy because the cut (replaced) band is so much lighter it can't counter the weight of the setting. So now my diamond rotates worse than before and stays in the palm of my hand. I have used Greenan and Sons for the past 20 years for all my fine jewelry needs. I even sent friends to them for their engagement rings. Disappointment doesn't adequately describe how I feel right now. When I pointed out my concerns, nothing but rationalizations and talk about size again. Walt Greenan argued with me and stated that he called to get my approval when he did not. He called to say the rings were ready for pick up. If he had NOT gone on ad nauseum about his foot/boot and Thanksgiving with his family that included his ex, he would have heard and understood my request, his customer's request. I thought I could have a more rational conversation with the younger Greenan who was in the store when I brought my rings in and also heard my request for my rings not to be cut. I pointed out that the weight of the engagement ring was grossly different. The band had been cut, and the rings prongs and band had been overly polished so that the prongs had been burnished and the ornate scribing of the band had been completely removed. He, too, was a hot head. He also went on to state that the ring had to be cut to be sized. I DID NOT ASK for the RING to be SIZED. I asked for the beads to be added. He handed my rings back to me. He stated he wasn't going to argue with me and marched off. All I asked for were for the retentive beads to be added to my rings, nothing else. I am thankful I have 2 previous appraisals with photos for my next steps. Greenan and Sons are not what they used to be, not in customer service and not in craftsmanship. read more

I have done business with them for years, having had old jewelry and old-style wind- up watches repaired and also on my everyday wear Seiko battery watch. I have just had the most horrific experience at this store that's 4 months in the making. My daughter brought a strand of pink pearls (20) there in August to have them repaired. They did not call us back to inform us that the repair was completed until today. When I looked at the strand of pearls one was the wrong size and the wrong color the other was the wrong color. When we took them back to the store to point out that there was an issue before we even finished the sentence the guy at the store Walter completely lost his cool. He was shouting at us saying that they didn't do anything to our jewelry and escalated the situation far more than it should have been. My daughter attempted to tell him that this was the second piece of jewelry that they have damaged (the other was her promise ring) he waved her off, spoke over her and said "well I don't know about that". He proceeded to say something about "you people" which is concerning. Walter also called us "disgusting" and began to twist whatever we said into the most absurd thing he could think of. For example I said "there's more than one way to skin a cat" to my daughter when she began to get visibly upset by Walter's actions and words and his response was to shout "oh so now I'm a rat and you're going to skin me, so you're threatening me". After this he started getting more and more angry when we tried to reiterate that these pearls were matched to each other and he began to slam things on the counter, he snatched the pearls from my daughters hands and when she took them back from him, he marched behind the stand, picked up the phone and threatened to call the police. At that point we left the store and called the other location as that's where the owner is. We spoke to a nice gentleman at that location and told him all that had happened. This gentleman's first response to the name Walter was "oh god". When we finished the story and told him about Walter calling us "you people" and we raised the question on whether he is a bigot or a sexist he said "well Walter has an antiquated view of women". Take of that as you will. I plan on never coming here again, in addition I don't think you should either as at the very least this manager is a sexist with anger issues. With his mannerisms I felt as though if there hadn't have been a display between us I would have been struck. read more

After my divorce I wanted to create new jewelry pieces from my engagement & wedding rings; a family member recommended paying a visit to John Greenan & Sons. I absolutely LOVE all my new jewelry. This was my 1st time creating custom jewelry and I don't consider myself to be a creative-I'm pretty indecisive of what I want but I'll know it when I see it. On my initial visit I wanted a cross, diamond studs and a diamond pendant necklace. I definitely underestimated the number of diamonds I was working with, so Damon recommended a halo diamond pendant to use more of the diamonds. Then we looked up and I had 12 diamonds left to my surprise. So I decided I wanted a bracelet to use my remaining stones. Damon helped with some ideas but I found the design of the Cartier Love bracelet and that's what I wanted. Every single one of my new creations came out absolutely beautiful and I thank Damon and Walter for helping me turn negative memories into gorgeous jewelry. read more

I went to this store because of all the rave reviews online. It was a pretty big mistake. Getting the engagement ring/wedding bands has been the most stressful part of wedding planning BY FAR. I already had the diamond from my future mother-in-law, so I assumed setting the diamond in one of their settings would be a straightforward job. Here are the main things that went wrong: 1) At our first visit, we said we wanted the wedding bands engraved. We told them we wanted the date engraved with dots between the numbers. They said OK and would call when the rings were done. We got the call and I asked that the engraving was finished as well. She acted like she had never heard we wanted an engraving done and said we had to come in to pick a font. When we came in (which was not such an easy task because they were closed when Google said they would be open so we had to come back twice), the woman said my band was so small that there were only two fonts to choose from. Oh, and since I only wanted the date of the wedding and no words (which I said at the initial visit and again on the phone) there was only one font. Great so I didn't have to be there after all. 2) When they finished the wedding bands for real, we went to pick them up on a Saturday. I called ahead since they had been closed once before. I called at 3:15 to confirm they were open until 4 PM. They said yes. I arrived at 3:40 and they were closed, locked, lights off, cases covered. Extremely frustrating. 3) I left work for an hour to go pick up those damn rings on Monday. Not really a surprise at this point, but the engraving was wrong. I asked for a total of seven characters: the date of the wedding separated by dots. I watched her write it down because she had already forgotten it from the first visit and phone call. It came out as the date with dashes. That alone isn't a big problem, but come on. Aren't jewelers supposed to be attentive to detail? 4) My engagement ring and wedding band are the wrong size (too big). That just made me laugh because I found out at the final visit and was so ready to be done. 5) My fiance's name is spelled wrong on the appraisal. They mailed it to us and I had already decided I was never going back so I didn't bother fixing it. Then there's the little stuff. They said the rings would be done in 3-4 weeks. We called after 4 weeks and they seemed annoyed we were bothering them. It took another 1-2 weeks to finish up. This is probably because they're a small company so it's not totally fair to blame them. But holy moly how many things can go wrong when setting a diamond in a pre-designed setting? I think every single step of this process had at least one problem. Oh, and we wanted to put a peridot in my future mother-in-law's ring (to replace the diamond she was giving me) and they kept saying how they couldn't do it without rebuilding the whole ring. Fortunately, we went to another store for that job. They did a perfect job on the first try. read more

Being an endorser is part of my profession and there can be good and bad that comes along with that. I am always very careful in speaking about my experiences with any company as I take the responsibility of whatever power my voice does have very seriously. In fact most of the time if I have a not so stellar experience I will keep it to myself for the most part as just like my Momma always taught me, if you cant say something nice don't say anything at all. Unfortunately this situation could not go unaddressed as I feel as though you would want to know in order to protect yourself from one of the most precious memories in life being tarnished even in the slightest. When my fiance Marshall started the proposal process he knew he wanted a one of a kind diamond to put on my finger. He knows that I have studied and adore vintage stones and wanted to make that a dram come true for me. He has always heard me rave about Old Mine Cuts so he researched what he could and thought he could trust a jeweler to steer him in the right direction with this. He went to John Greenan and Sons in Burtonsville, MD after a recommendation from family and thought they had a good reputation because they have been in business for so long. Their motto is also "Creating Lasting Memories From Our Family To Yours". That makes so sad to even type. Marshall was adamant that the diamond had to be and old mine, and even conversed with them for weeks in person and via email so it was clear what he was asking for. During one of their in person consultations the owner came out with a few diamonds from the back promising they were rare and vintage and that they "don't get ones in like this often so he should hold it". He trusted them and thought they were taking care to create the dream ring he had in mind for me. This upsets me so much that he would make this huge show knowing they were misleading him. Here's the kicker. I know vintage stones. I've studied them for a long time. I don't have a gemology degree but I could take one look at it know it was not what they promised him. They bold faced lied to him for weeks and we don't understand why. They told him that the diamond was cut from a necklace in the 1950's. Which anyone that would have a gemology degree knows is not old mine cut. That would have even been special in itself had they been openly honest from the beginning in that they didn't have what he was looking for, and had our experience in questioning them on this matter hadn't gone so horribly wrong. After weeks of not wanting to say anything to Marshall for fear of crushing him, I mentioned that this stone isn't an old mine cut. He was so excited about the rarity of the stone and every time he would mention it to me he could see it on my face that there was something off. He knows me all to well and I don't lie to him about anything. He called the jeweler right away to set up an appointment to see what they could do to rectify the situation. When we went in for the appointment to meet with he owner Ed Greenan. I was very nervous and emotional at trying to to make Marshall feel bad about this in any way. After a few minutes of thinking they were trying to make things right and admit what they did was a mistake I quickly realized that they were still trying to mislead us yet again. We were given a story that they never implied it was an old mine cut, and that stones of this size were near impossible to find in an old mine diamond. (In a quick search I found several ) All this after Mr. Greenan regaled us of his extensive experience and gemology degree. He offered to bring out some of the "tiny stones he had" and show me until he found out that I already own some old mine cuts. His face seemed to turn at learning that I had knowledge of these stones. As if he knew that I knew what he was doing in that moment. I was appalled at how he continued to tap his metal pen on my engagement ring as he was talking. I supposed this was his way of exerting authority and getting my attention as I couldn't look him in the face. I was overwhelmed and began to cry and just had to leave the store as I didn't know what else to do. I had never felt so small in my life. After the shock wore off a little Marshall contacted them again to see what we could do. We were hopeful they would try and rectify lying and treating us they way they did. We were oh so very wrong. Mr. Greenan's response was that he had never in his career been accused of being a liar, and that he and told us to return the ring to him and get our money back. He informed us that the "he has thousands of other happy customers and he didn't want our business." He actually went so far as to say that he didn't trust US??? My then fiancé and I visited several jewelers, including one very high end local jeweler, in search of the perfect engagement ring. Disappointed at the service received at all of the others, John Greenan & Sons was a breath of fresh air. Walt, Daman and Lidia provided superb service from start to finish. They gave us thorough training on the 4 C's of diamonds and showed us how to look for imperfections under the microscope. This established trust in their products and salesmanship. We were eloping in less than a month. Because my fat fingers are larger than average, my ring had to be custom made. I was afraid that it wouldn't be done in time, but they communicated our sense of urgency to the designer and we received it almost a week before we needed it. This is like my first adult jeweler experience (you know not stopping at some place in the mall kinda of a deal) and I am so glad I came here. I found Damon (owner) and his shop through Yelp. In February, I took a trip to Tanzania I had to get some tanzanite while I was there. Although the guide refused to take me to the mines where the gemstones come from, thankfulky I was with a friend she and brought me to the town at the base of the mine for shopping. I was told to buy stones and set them when I got home. This was a first for me but I did as instructed and came home looking for someone to the stones into earrings. Ok so I walk into the John Greenan & Sons and start the convo with, "Hi. Do you set jewelry?" When Damon responded "Yes we do." I told him, "Okay this is my first time doing this. I have no idea what to ask next. I have some gemstones that I would like to set into earrings." From that point on he was a gem. He inspected my stones and confirmed I made a very good selection due to the color and clarity of the stone. He walked me through my setting options, process, time frame and pricing. Somewhere in there I dropped a hint that I was about to do a small surgery to repair my torn ear lobe. He counselled me that I should wait to set the stones until after the surgery. He said, "Honestly you are going to want to wear these as soon as they are set. Do the surgery, come back when it's done and we will take care of you. Heck the price of gold is going down and may save you some money too." If that's not caring and commitment to the customer, I don't know what is. I returned 3 months later, ear repaired and ready to set. Surprisingly he remembered me and my stones as soon as I walked in the door. After two days, I picked up my earrings. For the first time since February when I purchased the stones, I was actually able to wear them and they are indeed stunning. My experience here was great. I had no clue what I was doing but Damon walked me through every step of the process. Each time we spoke he was friendly and informative, so much so that I never called around to any other jeweler to check prices or process. He instantly inspired confidence in me and I know he would take good care of my precious stones. read more

What a Gem! We discovered this family owned business (since 1971!) when my gold earring got stuck in my ear. It was an introduction to their wonderful customer service. Daemon was terrific as he figured out a way to get the earring off even bringing his on-site technical jeweler to consult. We had a moment to look around. They have lovely and stunning pieces. I ended up getting a nice pair of silver earrings (no nickel for those of you who have allergies) and it was half-price. I was also Impressed with the young man who helped me ; he was so knowledgeable. Needless to say, Daemon got the earring off and they readjusted and fixed the stem. When I picked them up the next day they were like brand new and I got to meet the father who was equally helpful and super nice. If you need a jeweler and/or jewelry don't miss this hidden gem. We heard about John Greenan & Sons through our neighborhood server as we are new in Silver Spring. This store came highly recommended. My boyfriend purchased an antique ring in Germany and we went Eddy (the owner) to get it re-sized as it was way to big for me. Everyone was helpful and friendly but Eddy told me that he is not sure that the ring could be re-sized as it has diamonds etc on the side of the ring. He wanted to check with the person in his store who does the actual work. They where able to re-size the ring without damage to the stones and it looks just as old (1910) as before and one barely notices the slightly lighter silver on the underside of the ring. We where charged a very fair price for this work and I am very happy. We will recommend Greenan & Sons anytime. Thanks Eddy. read more

Wish there were a zero stars rating possible. I had such a bad experience here. We brought them a ring to resize and set with a new stone. The first resizing was too small--I don't blame them for that, my husband used soap to get an impression of a ring that fit and I understand that's not a good way to do it. I was happy to pay to have the ring resized again. This time, I went in myself, handed them my ring that fit me, and they sized it on the spike. They did not hand me a sample ring from the sample box to try on, just wrote down that it was sized at a 6 and said they'd have it ready in a week or so. When I went back, the ring was too small. They insisted "your hands must have changed." I pointed out that they had chosen the size, so I assumed that they had chosen wrong. The young woman I was working with--who was polite the whole time--was pushed out of the way by a man who talked down to me, was openly rude, said it was my fault, and then left while I was mid-sentence. I left the ring with them to go home and collect myself. I then took my ring--the one they had sized on a stick to get the size--to two different jewelry stores, both of which sized it at 6 1/4 (which is why the 6 didn't fit me). I called the store back, explained that, and asked if they could resize it to a 6 1/4 without charging me for a third time. Nope. I explained how unpleasant my experience was--oh sorry, it's not usually like that. Finally I just picked up the ring, sized to the (incorrect) 6, and paid for that sizing. I don't want them working on it again. The saddest part to me is this is a family ring and now has such unpleasant experiences associated with it. read more

I went here to get my class ring re-sized and am so happy with how it turned out. I was helped by Damon, who had great advice on what size I should choose, taking into account how my fingers react based on the temperature and seasons. It's just the right size now and I am excited to be wearing it again! We've mostly come here for repairs to watches and rings and such, rather than for large purchases. But we've always been happy with the results. The people are nice and professional. The job they do is always good. Sometimes when they do something small they don't even charge. Once they tried several times to fix a Movado watch for me, but it refused to be fixed, and they returned my money. Very honest, decent people - I would recommend this store to anyone. Note: The Burtonsville store is completely different and much inferior. They charge high prices and don't do a good job - see my review of that store for details. read more

I am a neighbor and this past weekend, there was an attempted armed robbery at this store in the middle of the day. The owners of the store, determined to get back their stolen property, shot into the street at the robber, missing the robber and endangering the lives of people in the immediate area. I am disgusted by the actions of these store owners who value their property over the lives and well being of everyone around them. I strongly encourage you to boycott this business. read more

I have been buying from Walter and Ed Greenan all my life. Ed and Walter dad which founded the establishment. in 1920 which i met when i was a teenagers was the most pleasant man in the world. Walter and Ed have the same personality, and would go all out to make sure you are satisfied. What disappointing experiences we have had in dealing with Greenan and Sons our last two visits there! We have been customers of Greenan and Sons for years. My engagement ring and wedding band were purchased from there years ago. I have had my diamond re-set on several occasions. Over the years we have sent anyone who was searching for a reputable and expert jeweler to Greenans. My husband has gone by on occasion to speak with John Greenan about questions concerning antique jewelry. Recently, we brought three rings to be repaired and resized to Greenans in Silver Spring. My daughter also brought a diamond engagement ring in to be looked at for sizing. On this visit, we had to ask for a receipt for my rings. They kept telling me I must have been given it, so I questioned myself and looked repeatedly through my purse. Finally, the owner went in the back and found my receipt. No apologies were extended. About ten days later, I still had not heard from anyone saying my rings were ready, so I called them. The woman who answered the phone, put me on hold for several minutes and then told me they were ready. I did not understand why they had not called me. My husband went by today to pick up my rings and to ask a question related to my daughter's diamond ring. He inquired about a gemologist who would be able to appraise a diamond for us. The owner of this store (John Grenan's son) said quite bluntly "look on the internet". The woman working in the store then brought them out and showed him two of the rings. He told her there was a third ring, and she looked in the envelope and found the third ring. Satisfied with the rings, my husband paid for the ring repairs by check. At this point my husband asked for a receipt for our rings. The owner said he did not have a receipt for us. My husband insisted that he get a receipt for our purchase. The owner then raised his voice and said "your cashed check will be your receipt". Again my husband said he wanted the original receipt because it indicated exactly what was being done for the rings. At this point the owner said "this is my store and you're not getting that receipt". We are very disappointed in the service we received from a store that we have thought so highly of for decades. We will no longer be bringing our business to Grennans and certainly will not recommend them to our family or friends. Very customer unfriendly service. read more

We had gone to this jeweler for watches and repairs and had found them customer-service oriented and friendly, producing good results for us at a fair price. I recently put in an expensive watch for repair and was told I could pick it up in 2 weeks. Three weeks went by and when I called to check on it, I was told by the person who answered the phone that he would check and call me back. Never happened. I called again the following week with the same experience. One more time, same thing. I called again, now over 6 weeks later and was told my watch was ready to be picked up. I went to the store and was handed my watch, that had not been fixed, and when I asked why they could not have told me they could not fix it six weeks ago, the man looked at me and said, "I am not dealing with this" and walked away! African Americans, particularly African American men should not trade with John Greenan and Sons, Inc. I had my wedding ring sized there after a coworker (who happens to be Caucasian) recommended the store. I am use to suspicious stares when entering jewelry stores, and the stares I received exceeded my expectations. I decided to move forward with the sizing because of my coworkers recommendation. I was quoted a price and paid for the repairs in full. A week later I returned to the store to retrieve my ring. Once again, I was greeted with the stares as I handed my receipt to one of the sales persons. The sales person returned with my ring as a Caucasian customer entered the store. The sales person left my ring on the counter, and walked over to the new customer with a warm greeting. The Caucasian customer said, please wait on him as I am just looking. The sales person said someone else can wait on him, referring to me. An additional sales person pulled the ring out of the bag to give to me. I asked him to weigh the ring, witch he did. I thanked him for his help and walked out of the store. Moments latter the sales person ran out of the store yelling, " Waite, did you pay for that ring?!" I told him that I did and he demanded that I show him the receipt. I was embarrassed and humiliated. I gave him the receipt, which clearly indicated that I had paid. After careful inspection he walked away, leaving me on the sidewalk as onlookers watched and waited for my response. I decided to return to the store to let them know how disrespectful they were. A really nice family business. My boyfriend bought my engagement ring there and it's gorgeous, plus they were incredibly nice to me when I needed the ring resized. I got a complimentary cleaning solution with the ring as well. They are also very quick - it only took a day to make the ring (during the busy Christmas season!) and only a day to resize the ring. Beware!!! Bait & Switch Type Tactics!! I would give negative 5 stars if that were an option. I was offended by the treatment I received from this establishment and they totally tried to scam me into paying more than I was quoted. I recently came here on 4/11/16 to replace batteries in my Movado watches and have some links removed from a brand new Michele watch (if they were able to remove the links). I had the batteries changed with no trouble, and I asked Juliette how much it would be to remove links from my Michele watch, and she quoted me $1 per link (I needed to remove 4 links). Then I told her that one of my Movado watches was very scratched because I wore it everyday, and she offered to have it buffed, I asked her how much that would be and she told me it was FREE. Cindy told me she didn't know how to remove the links from my Michele watch and Juliette stated that Damon can remove the links and buff the other watch. I felt that it seemed pretty seamless and I was confident that I'd have a good experience at this place because of the other Yelp reviews. WRONG!! I was told my watches would be ready that Wednesday, so I called on Wednesday to find out if my watches were ready and I was told by Cindy that the Michele watch had been sent to the Watch Pocket because Damon was unable to remove the links himself. I asked when it'd be ready and she told me Ed would call me and let me know. I asked about the Watch Pocket because I didn't know who they were and I would have preferred that I make the decision as to who else touches my brand new watch if these guys weren't even able to remove the links, but Cindy was very dismissive and told me that I should have gone to Nordstrom where I bought the watch to have the links removed and that it was sent out to a contractor that they trust to do the work and that they will call me when my watch is ready. (They took these liberties with my watches and did not even tell me that there was a cost associated with them CHOOSING to send my watches out for service.) I felt that both Ed and Cindy were very condescending to me as a customer and really didn't care about what I wanted or needed, they were just doing whatever they wanted to do. Ed called me the following day to tell me that my watches were available for pick up, and I asked him what the total cost would be and he told me $40. BAIT & SWITCH! I told him that Juliette quoted me $4, and he admitted that she should not have said that and that it was more because they had to send out the watches. I told him that before they sent out the watches they should have told me about the additional costs and allowed me to decide whether or not I wanted to authorize that service. He disagreed and rushed me off of the phone because it was a lunch hour rush and he had to open the doors for customers that were waiting outside, but before I was done speaking he hung up the phone on me. He did call me back after a few minutes to apologize for hanging up the phone on me, but I was just in awe and really began questioning who I was doing business with and why other reviewers trust this company. Fast forward to today 4/18/16: I go to pick up my watches and Cindy tells me that I owe $40. I told her again that I was quoted only $4, and that she can't charge me a price different from what I was quoted. She began to deny hearing Juliette quote me $4 (when she was standing right beside her) and also claimed that she told me there was going to be a charge because the watches needed to be sent out. I told her that that was untrue and she then shoved my watches across the glass to me and told me to take them and leave. How rude!! These people are the worst! Then Ed chimed in and told me that Damon said that they should not charge me but should tell me that I should take my business elsewhere! Even more rude! They are telling me not to come back to their establishment because of their own incompetence and lack of decorum. They never acknowledged the mistake that they made or even felt that they did anything wrong. If I was not an educated consumer they would have baited and switched me successfully. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY HERE. THESE PEOPLE ARE SO NASTY AND DISHONEST! THEY COMPLETELY LACK RESPECT AND THE GENERAL CONCEPT OF CUSTOMER SERVICE! I don't even know why they have a holier than thou attitude because this jewelry store has security gates all over their windows and are off of a sketchy side street in downtown Silver Spring. I would recommend you go to the Watch Pocket with your watch needs instead because they send your watches there anyway and charge you a fee or taking it to them. My Michele links were removed by the Watch Pocket with no scratches and although the buffing on the Movado watch wasn't that great, it wasn't terrible, and my watch was VERY scratched when I brought it in in the first place. They really helped me pick out an awesome ring and stone. Damon was up front and honest about grades and where I could make compromises to meet my price point. Other jewelers kept trying to upsell me or just give me what they had in stock, but Greenan's didn't do that. They worked hard to stay within my price range and find the best stone for the setting. He showed me every flaw and explained the grade, and the ring turned out awesome. She loves it and gets compliments daily.
