i checked out the waffle co, right on robson and bidwell, towards denman, and it ended up being a bit of a contrast between a well designed space and a less than great first impression.
the interior is nicely put together. it leans into a warm, modern café aesthetic with soft neutral tones, curved archways, and brown seating that gives it a slightly more lounge like feel than your typical dessert spot. the lighting does a lot of the work, a mix of lantern style pendants and soft wall sconces that create a cozy, relaxed atmosphere. there are also rounded, backlit frames along the wall and small design touches that make it feel intentionally instagram friendly without going overboard.
the mascot waffle character near the front, drizzled in dark chocolate syrup, welcomes guests. it adds a playful, slightly quirky touch that breaks up the otherwise polished interior and gives it a bit more personality.
which made the initial experience a bit surprising. as soon as i walked in, there was a strong smell of mothballs that was hard to ignore. it hit immediately and lingered in the air. i actually considered turning around, but mentioned it to staff instead. they were quick to spray something to help neutralize the smell, which i appreciated, but the smell didn't fully go away and kind of stuck with me throughout the visit.
the menu leans heavily into sweet, indulgent options, waffle sandwiches, mini pancakes, affogato, and thick shakes.
i ordered the iced strawberry matcha with oat milk, and it didn't quite land. it leaned heavily on a sugary syrup rather than anything fresh, which made it taste a bit artificial and one note, with the matcha getting lost.
overall, it feels like a spot with real potential. the space is thoughtfully designed and the concept is fun, especially for that robson strip. but between the lingering smell and the overly sweet drink, it took away from what could have been a strong first visit.
it's still very new, so this could just be opening hiccups, might be worth checking back once they've had some time to settle in. read more
