I'm ALWAYS intrigued by restaurants that have been around for decades because simply put, they must be good since they stay around for that long. I mean people must have loved them quite a lot, right? This place is restored and re-opened in 1985, which means it's been around for almost 40 decades (at the time of writing), but actually, its history stretched further back. They tell their history on the front of the menu. Anyway, let's get into it. The interior of the restaurant itself is very nice. Almost have a fancy feel to it, but I love how it's still considered casual dining. The ambiance is relaxed and if you get to sit at the back, you have quite a nice view of the lake. Their menu heavily consists of white fish. Being an avid seafood lover, for me, it's just another reason to love. Instead of going for the dinner menu, instead, I decided to have whitefish chowder and the appetizer menu for a meal, which is the smoked whitefish. It is served with apple, crackers, dill toast, and cream cheese. It's like having a very fun snack plate as a meal. You can create various different flavor and texture combinations for each bite and my inner child really had fun. The whitefish chowder is delicious too! Warm, creamy, savory, and comforting. The whitefish dinner came in huge portions with vegetables and one side. My friend had hers Scampi Style--onion, bell pepper, garlic butter, and white wine. I didn't try it myself but they certainly looked delicious and my friend enjoyed it. The price is reasonable and the service is good. I would recommend this place for a nice dinner to anyone visiting Marquette. If you like beer, they also have some brewery selections, which I personally did not try, but just giving a shoutout in case anyone is interested. read more

Rack of ribs were fall-off-the-bone good. The sauce is ok, but slathered on so I needed four napkins and three wipes while eating. And I'm not that sloppy. My wife had the whitefish piccata which was dry. We've been regulars here for years and have usually found the food was good. Today it is merely acceptable. And when will they ever get rid of the canned or just thawed out green beans! But, this time when I asked our very friendly server for something to substitute, she offered a second baked potato, which I had already had one coming, so I guess this is the new policy? Take advantage of it so the owners will finally get the message and eliminate the always "seasonal" green beans. We had our must-make reservation, and waited about five minutes before being greeted, then seated. The atmosphere is always great with lots of historical paintings and sundry items around. 3.5 stars would be my official review. But I decided to be generous vs round down. The food was decent and the service was good. It wasn't one of my favorite meals of the trip but it was "fine." I had the whitefish, as did my husband. The baked potato wasn't very good that accompanied it. My daughter likes her Hawaiian pizza. Here is another case where I wish Yelp would allow a half-star. I'd prefer a 4.5 over the 4 star review I provided. The menu offers a wide range of prices and wide variety of menu choices. We ate with a large group and everyone found something to their liking. The service was good and the atmosphere was conducive to conversation among our dinner partners. I'd describe the restaurant decor as eclectic. My solid advice is to get a cup or bowl of the whitefish chowder. It was simply amazing and worthy of the upcharge. I had a full rack of the pork ribs. Fantastic; fall off the bone, goodness. Saucy with a little Cajun kick. The portion was huge. They were about $21 and came with a choice of potato. Everyone in my dining group were satisfied with their meal. The restaurant offers a good variety of beers and a full bar. Dress for the restaurant ranges from casual to dress clothes. In from out of town. Trying to visit my old haunts from living here 20 years. Stop in for some Paul Grant pasta. First I get the run around and I'm told they'll seat me if I can be gone in an hour. (Reservations) Then I look for the pasta, lunch menu. "We don't serve dinner until 4:30." Did I mention it's 4:20? Hostess and waitress were cold and not very friendly. Absolutely charming place in Upper Peninsula, MI. Classic wooden decor from late 1800s and a well maintained historical building with view of lake. Their white fish is fresh and cooked in variety of ways. This white fish is slightly different from rest of the places; it's more fishy. We tried smoked fish, white fish chowder and Piccata. Their smoked fish starter was an absolute blast. Fish chowder wasn't as impressive as chowders I have tried in east coast but still tasty. Piccata was the highlight of our dinner. Slightly crusty, tangy and flavorful. We had a wonderful experience. They also have in-house brewery with wonderful slightly sour and fruity beers. read more

The inside of the place is really nice. Our server said she was pretty new. Okay, I get it. But they weren't that busy (probably because it was raining and cold at the time, mid day). Took a loooooooong time to get a couple of salmon burgers which were cooked dry and were pretty tasteless. Without the tartar sauce, it would have been indistinguishable. Their homemade cole slaw was also bland. Sorry, but really lame tasting food that took way too long is not an incentive to return. We stopped in to catch up on a 40-year anniversary that we had to delay one day due to weather. We planned to visit the Pictured Rocks National Park and wanted a place to get a good meal at a reasonable price (we are celebrating of course). My wife and I each ordered steak (New York strip and a filet). I had a baked potato and salad and my wife asked for the fettuccine parmesan. The food was great and cooked as we requested, each with a side of fresh green beans. Our salads were greens (no iceberg) with green pepper slices, cherry tomato halves, and homemade dressing (they have traditional, bottled options like ranch, or 1000 Island) and they offer several homemade dressings. We each tried a homemade option (sesame and tarragon/honey) which were excellent. We finished our meal with a slice of vanilla cheesecake and blueberry topping and a slice of peanut butter cup pie. The cheesecake is either homemade or high-quality purchased. Our service was excellent and I highly recommend stopping by if you are coming to the Munising-Marquette area! read more

I'm not sure why this place is so busy. First time we ate here, our table was sticky. Second time, the food continued to be unremarkable. It's all just okay. In Marquette on a family vacation, looking for lunch. We were a party of 10 adults. We were too large a party to be seated, we happily offered to break up into separate tables and/or bar but were refused. This is our 2nd attempt to eat at this restaurant. The first time we were 2 adults with four well behaved and appropriately dressed children - we were refused seating than as well - that was 17 years ago and we vowed never to go back. Two Parts. Food: Seafood Bisque. 1 Good broth, but it should be advertised as Mushroom soup with Krab. This definitely is not a seafood bisque. Go to Lagniappe for an EXCELLENT bowl of seafood bisque. This small bowl was $6.50-- for a few small pieces of Krab/scrod floating in it. Our waitress was really nice and made a point of telling us that the Whitefish special was really good because the fish is bought from Thills Fish House that can be seen from the restaurant. I guess that is the only thing that they buy from Thills. Blueberry Ale: 5 They know how to make a Blueberry beer that all others will be compared. Seriously, it's that good. Went here on the recommendation of our hotel. On a hunch called for a reservation on a Thursday night. Good thing, as those without a reservation were turned away! Were seated in a little nook in the front window. No railing for the steps , so a little harder for older people. It was freeIng, and we rapidly discovered the window was slightly open. When we told the waitress, she did not believe us, and did not offer to send anyone over to close it, probably because it was stuck--which made for a chilly experience. We diverted the breeze with the beer menu, but it definitely detracted from the stars given! The bruschetta was very good. Two of us ordered their onion soup, which had been touted by many as the best they had ever eaten. I feel sorry for them. There were few onions, a ton Of croutons, and a huge blob of cheese (admittedly tasty) in a beef broth that was too salty, and tasted like it came from a condensed soup can. Should be called their glob of soggy bread in salty broth with cheese soup, not french onion! Would not recommend. Two got the deli salad. Attractively presented, A little hard to eat as the platter was so full, but Both enjoyed their salad. One ordered the Bianco pizza. Very good, but only if you love rosemary! If you don't like rosemary, don't get this! If you do, it is the best thing ever. Caramelized onion was perfect and sweet, herb mix just right, with just the right amount of cheese on a crispy flat bread. Overall we enjoyed our meal, but would not get onion soup again. And don't expect the staff to care about your comfort. And definitely get a reservation. read more
