Burrito
Jimmy H.

Would've been 4 if they served my only single order of a pint of beer. I repeatedly asked if it's coming they said they'd check on it. But it never came during my 1 hour stay. However, the food was good. Although it was vegetarian burrito, it was quite satisfying on both taste and portion even for big meat eater like myself. No worries on food here. But drinks... It really puzzled me...

To start it's not that impressive as you been told! As soon as you say you are a vegetarian for some reason everyone at work mentioned this place! So the hype was there and as always my stomach was ready! The burrito was a disappointment! Taste, content and that most important portion size was not sufficient. Well yesterday gave another chance before giving this place one starGlad I tried the Laksa! Yummy like anything!! Worried about the portion size from the previous experience ordered some chips as if Like them. It was a mistake! But the Laksa was so good will go back just for it again! Moral of the story, everything and everyone deserves a second chance!

Organic veg with tofu wok stir fry with satay sauce

The portions are really big but the food was tasty and healthy. We got the pumpkin and lentil daal & wok stir fry with veggies and tofu. Typically paratha is greasy but this one didn't have any residual grease. The stir fry was flavorful and you could taste the char from the wok. Highly recommend this restaurant to vegans and non vegans.

Young coconut to drink!

As a vegetarian, I was overwhelmed for choice - so many delicious options! It was very popular at 11:30 on a Thursday, so best to anticipate crowds. The burrito was decent but the accompanying guac and corn chips were especially good. There was a pad mee special that was tasty with lots of tofu & veggies. And the young coconut was a refreshing drink on a hot day. When you go inside, someone will seat you. Once you get the bill, pay at the register in the side room.

Vegie Bar is just hype. Ambiance: A really really cool place. It's very large and spacious (although typically busy with people) with awesome decor and a trendy location. Customer Service: The girl who served us was nice and attentive, but a bit too pushy. When I said I didn't want any mushrooms in my meal (because obviously mushrooms are the spawns of Satan), she kept trying to convince me that it's better with the mushrooms and I should keep them... after I said no 4 times. No exaggeration. She's still nice enough, but it did honestly put me off. Food: I ordered Mexican Burrito, Chips w/ Mayonnaise, and had a bit of my friend's Gyoza. My friend's Gyoza was really disappointing. Instead of having a nugget inside, they had a random array of vegetables not even molded together with paste. When you bite into it, everything somewhat falls apart. My Mexican Burrito was alright, though underwhelming. The best part of the meal were the Chips w/ Mayonnaise dip and that's not saying a lot. Definitely the hype.

Original Stir-fry with Satay Sauce

Delicious and approachable vegetarian food. Before I ate here, I was hesitant to go to vegetarian restaurants as I have never been before and thought it would be awkward as I'm a meat eater and didn't want to offend anyone accidentally with what I was wearing or the food I ordered. Also, while I am open to trying and experiencing new things, I didn't want to be lectured on living a meat free or anti-corporate lifestyle. I got none of this at Veggie Bar. Staff do dress like your typical free thinking, alternative personalities with dreadlocks. But they are courteous and friendly and are not pushing any agendas. The food here is the same as at any other restaurant, except they don't serve meat (they still serve dairy etc). The affordable menu is quite large so you can still get your protein and carbs from burgers, bread, rice and tofu meals. You definitely will not miss out on any essential dietary nutrients if you select your meals wisely. I had the satay tofu burger which was good value for the price and was delicious. Drinks are juices, coffee and they even sell coke soft drinks, so they are not alienating customers by being over political with what foods you can buy. They take credit cards and the restaurant is huge, with 3 different areas and the usual community tables. Definitely worth a visit.

Tofu & Quinoa Burger with Sweet Potato Fries...delicious!!!

I'm told that the Vegie Bar is a bit of an institution & I can see why. A varied menu with enough choices for even the biggest carnivore to perhaps get even a little excited about. Not only is the food delicious but the juices & smoothies are too. On my most recent visit I had the tofu & quinoa burger, which was very tasty and the brioche bun was just heaven - especially after being on a carb reduced diet in recent weeks!!! The sweet potato chips accompanied the dish well with a tasty smoky chipotle sauce to dip them in - yum!!! I rounded off my meal with a bounty ball that seemed like a slightly less guilty treat!!! I look forward to heading back & trying more of the menu. The only negative that I have is that the service can be a little hit & miss, generally having to grab a staff member rather than them approaching you.

It's an great place to eat. I'm not vegan but I loved there meal. They are many choice and all plate are very big. You have the choice with difference type of meal can be gluten free, sugar free, raw. The waiters are very nice and very quickly. But many people want to dinner in this restaurant and you have to wait some time. It's not possible to do a reservation. There desert are very nice and very tasty. I took the carrot cake and my friend the brownie.

Ok so the Vegie Bar is obviously popular and most people like the food for the price. But this is not what I want to talk about. I want to talk about the COURTYARD BAR OUT THE BACK which many people don't know about and is almost a separate entity. So if you have been to the Vegie Bar many times over but have never walked through to the back courtyard make sure you check it out next time you go. It is fantastic. If you walk through the restaurant towards the back left of the room you will eventually find yourself in a hidden away secret garden. They have DJ's playing music on the weeksends, and you can chill out on the deck drinking sangria to your hearts content. It really is one of the cooler drnking places in the Fitzroy area. A great place to meet friends and an even greater place go on a date with the vegetarian girl you met at yoga or pilates class.

Baked mushroom.

Extremely noisy but busy Friday night. Do not go here if you want to chat with your companion as you won't be able to hear each other. Brick walls and concrete do nothing but amplify the yelling and carrying on of the other patrons. Food arrived quickly, though too quickly! Rice was cold and beans in the burrito undercooked. Some flavours & taste but otherwise bland guacamole, boring but filling food. The baked mushroom was nice though. And I'm sure if they cared more I wouldn't have had the negative thoughts about the food. It was adequate but nothing to return for. Overall it's an incredibly loud atmosphere and the lighting was so dark I could not read the menu. Meh. I wouldn't return.

Too much green leaf of top (an epidemic in Melbourne veggie restaurants) but otherwise delicious
Lyndal M.

Always popular with the crunchier set, the Vegie Bar now spans at least three shop fronts on Brunswick st and is packed every time I go in. I've not had a dud meal here but they seem to shine on the stir fry type dishes. The green stir fry with tempeh and satay was delicious. I'd suggest getting the satay on the side otherwise it kind of overwhelms the dish. I'd like a few more tempeh or tofu options but the menu is a wealth of Vegie standards.

Sweet corn fritters with a poached egg and broccolini

This place is seriously vego heaven. I could eat here every day of the week and never get tired. I was visiting Melb only for a short time, but came here twice it was that good. My first time I ordered the shakshuka cause how can anyone pass up baked eggs? It honestly wasn't that spectacular. The eggs were overcooked and I felt the chickpeas needed more time cooking. My cousin got the ramen which was more of a noodle stir fry as it didn't have much broth. Her dish was quite tasty. Definitely recommend. The second time I came in I ordered the sweet corn fritters on top of sourdough toast with a poached egg and broccolini. I thought the portion size was a bit small, but I'm American so. Would highly highly recommend this place for any vego or omni

Chips for dinner! So much topping. The perfect nachos really
Phoebe L.

The veggie bar has good vego meals that meat eating friends, significant others and family will all enjoy. Most of their dishes are very large and pretty hard for me to finish. The soba noodle salad has lots of flavour and tastes super healthy but satisfying. I also love the Dahl (the starter) as it's super cheap and filling. If you are super hungry go the burrito it's huge and flavoursome (you will be full for 24hrs). The veg curries are ok too. The roti bread wraps are great value and filling. The vego nachos are so so good. Still unsure how you make cashew sour cream but it's delicious! Not a huge fan of the starters. The gyoza have let me down a couple of times (they come out a bit dry with not much filling). The stuffed mushrooms and rice balls are a bit meh. Same with the stir fries (but why would you order something so easy to make at home). The wine and beer list is pretty good and there are lots of nice looking non alcoholic options. The sangria is a pretty good match for the mexi dishes. You may have to wait but they have a bar at the back that you can wait in and have a wine.

Transformer. More than meets the eye…read more Sorry, as a child of the 80s I couldn't resist. Wanting a healthy dinner option for a catch up with a girlfriend, I thought we'd give new kid on the block, Transformer, a go. I'm not sure what I was expecting. Vegetables disguised as other things, faux meat...maybe hippies, mungbeans and incense? Having no real expectations meant I was really impressed with our experience. Upon entering, we were pleased to see a beautiful fit out, ambient lighting, and not a hippie in site. There was, however, lots of hipsters and it soon became apparent that we should have made a reservation! We luckily scored what was a cancelled table and proceeded to have a really lovely meal, with the perfect amount of friendly service. There's a decent wine list, beers and cocktails too. But for those not drinking (myself included on this particular occasion) there was an interesting selection of cold pressed juices and some little mini tonics (read: shots) loaded up with the likes of turmeric, ginger and coconut water. I liked having this before the meal as a way to get my appetite firing. We shared the pumpkin and tahini dip which is apparently the most popular thing on the menu. It comes with a slick of good quality olive oil and what I think is pomegranate molasses on top. Tangy, savoury and silky smooth it really was terrific. Next we had oyster mushrooms (tasty but not the biggest portion), a cucumber salad (fresh and creamy) and a sprouted brown rice beetroot risotto (delicious!). I can see more decadent, and boozy, nights being an expensive affair but we weren't super hungry and so these shared dishes only set us back around $30 a head! Bargain. I'll be back to try more of the interesting menu items.

One of our favorite food vacations is New Orleans. I will not doubt this chef again..they were delicious... comforting and flavorful. I would definitely get them again. I do wish the plantains were traditionally made though. The star for me was definitely the country fried lion's mane. Crispy, hearty, and so well-seasoned. I've wanted to try lion's mane for a while. This was the best place to try it. I'm not usually a big dessert person, but the chocolate brownie with biscotti-flavored ice cream had me claiming my fair share (my husband usually gets most of the dessert to himself!). Besides having transformed a vegetarian-unfriendly cuisine, they've also managed to do it in a fairly prominent corner, and fill their tables (both the individual ones and the communal table I sat at and the bar) with a very typical-looking bunch of Australians. It is not what one expects of an all-plant restaurant; the mainstream, hipster-ness of it all was quite unique to Melbourne. Like most tapas places, you'll pay a lot of money for a little food and probably like it. I only tried the chickpea soup and some sort of soda, though people sitting next to me ordered all kinds of delicious-looking things that I could only ogle. The soup was appealing enough that I finished a large bowl rather quickly. I would struggle to pay up for it on a regular basis if I lived in Melbourne, but I certainly would want to come with a group and try everything. It seemed like this place was a success.
