Luscious big toasted sandwiches from Smith&Deli, Fitzroy
    Steph H.

W-O-W just wow! Smith & Deli opens up from a non-descript doorway along a red-brick like a secret passageway into a treasure filled cave. Every single glorious item on the menu & all the goodies on the pantry shelves, fridges & freezers are vegan. I have died & gone to heaven. Give me one of everything, then seconds. I may pass out from the sheer glory of it all/over-eating. I go back several times a day. It's always packed (incl. cuddly dogs). Take one of their luscious big toasted sandwiches & a scrumptious coffee (in a keepcup of course) & go sit in the sun in the dog park down the road. Then you will know the meaning of happiness

Purple yam and coconut donut definitely did not disappoint. This place will continue to amaze me.

My go-to lunch spot. Best vegan sandwiches and snacks in town!! I don't think you could go wrong even if you closed your eyes and pointed to something on the menu. Temple of doom is my all time fave if you like something with a little kick! Definitely pick up a donut or dessert because they are bomb.

Sandwiches made to order. In a rush? Get one of the ready made snacks like the cheese scrolls.

If you love a big fat juicy Rueben sandwich, then Smith & Deli's version, The Ruebenstein, shouldn't* disappoint. The rye bread is delicious. Perfectly warm with a chewy crust, it's the ultimate balance to the mountain of pungent, caraway seed flecked, sauerkraut and zingy crunchy pickles. The Russian dressing brings the "meat" and the pickly goodness together. *I put the word "shouldn't" in there as a caveat because maybe the thing that really does it for you is the big stack of meaty goodness you normally get in a Rueben. Smith's version is faux-meat (!) but if you close your eyes and dream of Katz Deli in New York, your brain will be convinced it's the real deal. Smith & Deli is only a few weeks old, and as such they're still coping with "hot new thing" syndrome while trying to find their feet. I arrived at 2pm on a Tuesday afternoon, assuming it would be quiet. Instead I was met with a line out the door and staff raising their voices to try and explain the ordering system and that things might take a while. The sandwiches are made to order, so expect to wait 5-10 minutes after placing your order, or grab one of the "eat now" items like a cheese and kimchi scroll if you're in a rush. When I visited there was a lot of confusion about how to order and pay as one staff member (who was super lovely but struggling to manage the rabble) tried to manoeuvre people in to an imaginary line that snaked around the store. Once my order was placed I was given a ticket and told I could get other items from the store, but that I should stay in the line to pay. I walked away from the line to get a drink from the fridge (there's a massive selection of juice and kombucha) and then I no longer had a place in the messy "line" that was forming and stood around like a dork not knowing exactly where I should be or if I was pushing in front of others. It's a minor thing, and I'm sure eventually they'll get some bollards and rope, or even a deli ticketing system, but for now I think you need to be prepared for some minor chaos if you want to get your chompers around one of these seriously good, all vegan, sandwiches.

Vegan almond croissant + almond milk flat white

I've been here three times now, the first time I went I had no idea it was a VEGAN deli and I had an epic ham&cheese croissant that cost $12,- but was truly worth it... Then when I came back, still no one actually had explained to me that they only sold vegan goods... I think the food is delicious but the staff is clumsy, unwelcoming and there is no proper assembly line for service so the whole place is just an awkward doting around of people asking eachother shyly if they are in line or not. If they'd fix that I'd come back more often!

This is what a $16 vegan Cuban looks like

One should never have to ask the question "what is this turkey made out of?" As a non-vegan, I debated for a week about posting my opinion on Smith & Deli, but I figure other non-vegans might be curious about my experience at this 100% vegan establishment. The amount of glowing reviews was overwhelming, so I thought I would be open minded and try it myself. Aside from the bland tasting $16 Cuban that I ordered (the prices are really that outrageous), the bottom line is that everything here is fake and this "deli" is everything that is wrong with processed foods today. I was shocked with the lack of sandwiches made from actual foods that come from the earth. If you are looking for faux meats and cheeses, this place is for you. However, if you are looking for quality vegan options made from real fruits and vegetables, I would suggest investing in a wholesome meal from Transformer. The staff was pleasant and they offer a variety of items in their shop front, but I will never return.

Let us eat bread...Smith & Deli style!

It's feel-good food with a feel-good outcome. The space is large and airy, the perfect place to unwind over breakfast, lunch or dinner. I came for breakfast, but it appears they've got a few beers on tap and a bar so I am keen to check out their evening offerings. For breakfast I was torn between their 'Yeusli' (Organic puffed quinoa, chia seeds, activated buckwheat, figs, goji berries, pomegranate seeds, coconut flakes, almonds, currents, raw cinnamon, your choice of milk on the side) and one of their incredible looking smoothies. I opted for the Yeusli and had no regrets. Delicious, super-charged with raw food goodness and a reasonably-sized, filling portion. No overload of oats and yoghurt like most cafe muesli offerings. Normally I don't give 5 stars if the coffee isn't amazing, but I loved the different food offering and concept enough to bump it back up. Coffee is totally fine but the black coffee is not amazing. If you're a latte drinker you probably won't notice at all and there's the bonus of being able to choose different milks if you're not into soy or lactose. The staff were friendly and accommodating, all menu items were well priced and can feed you for $15 or less. Winner.

And I ventured back again the other day when I was in the area and hunger struck. And boy am I glad I did. They have lots of options: sandwiches, wraps, focaccia & a selection of hot food. None of which I have tried because of the incredible range of super tasty salads on offer. And these aren't your boring green tasteless salads. Think falafel, brown rice, roasted sweet potato, Greek, tuna, quinoa, freekah, potato, tabouli, beetroot and more! Choose your size (small or large), to have in (for an extra $1) or take away and then pick which ones you want. They load them into your container and away you go. I've tried many different ones, this last time included 4 types: roast sweet potato, freekah, tabouli & falafel salad - a bit of a middle eastern slant, totally delicious and healthy to boot, getting in a good couple of serves of veggies for lunch! I couldn't finish the whole thing (large takeaway container) so I ate half and saved the rest for alongside dinner that evening. Delish! I've also heard great things about the coffee, but haven't tried it myself. They are only open Monday to Friday, but they open super early (pre 6am) for your pre work coffee. There are a few outdoor tables that are good for a sunny day, but no room inside to sit and eat so you might need to takeaway if the weather ain't great. Friendly & efficient service tops it all off. Highly recommend you check it out if you work in the area or are passing through!

But the one of the biggest lessons I learned was that Australia's coffee game is on a whole. 'nother. level. Regardless of where I went to eat or just chill, the establishment would have a ~$6000 espresso machine ready to go. Aunty Peg's, however, was the only place that I saw espresso machines without steam wands. My cousin, Jeremy, told me that they specialize in coffee in it's purest form, and thus, would never need steam wands (since they're never steaming milk). Jeremy and I are both fond of filter coffee, so we both decided to get a flight of V60s. This was a terrible idea. We didn't realized that that meant we would both have to drink ~800 mL of coffee each. Caffeine doesn't really do anything to me, but Jeremy was starting to get jittery by the end of the flight. If you're coming here with someone else, share the flight. However, if you're getting a flight of espresso, then yeah, it would make perfect sense to have your own. The flight included three different types of coffee each processed a different way. We tried a single origin, a honey processed single origin, and the gesha. I wish they offered the honey processed coffee for purchase, because that one was my favorite. It was so smooth and tasted like mangoes. The gesha reminded me of an Earl Grey tea, which was a weird since it's, you know, coffee. Regardless, all three of the coffees were delicious. The staff at Aunty Peg's was great too. The barista was laser focused while making the drinks. Once he finished making our flight, he was super chill and fun to talk to. I had a great time here. Everything about Aunty Peg's is what I want to see more of in Oklahoma city. I'm especially glad that I bought some coffee to take home. Try the Humbler, it tastes fantastic!

Many months in the making, the rumour mill has been rife with what was going on at their Collingwood site. Finally it is open, presenting itself in the form of a roastery, cafe, shop, warehouse and training centre. From the moment of walking in the front door the warehouse nature of the venue is apparent with large open spaces. Located directly in front of the door is the front counter with a delicious selection of pastries and cakes, freshly baked upstairs. Next to the counter are the large, ornate, dresser-style shop shelves with a vast array of brewing equipment, beans, merchandise and books for sale. The coffee bar is the centrepiece with a sweeping array of custom single group heads, grinders, filter brewing equipment and what appear to be beer taps. But they're not beer taps in the sense that they pour beer. Pioneering a new technique of cold brew coffee, a local Geelong-based brewery has been enlisted to brew coffee in cold water which is then kegged and poured on tap with the help of some nitrogen. Served in a beer glass to complete the experience, it almost similar to Guinness in body. A delicious apple and raspberry tea cake matched surprisingly well. It should also be noted that this is a black coffee-only cafe, there is no milk available. This has been done to better highlight the qualities of the many coffee beans on offer. Next to the bar are a number of benches with demo brewing equipment for prospective customers to try out with an endless supply of beans. The stars of the show, the roasting machines, are visible further back in the warehouse. It is clear that Aunty Peg's is all about bringing quality coffee and its origins and various brewing techniques closer to the general public. A must visit for anyone interested more in coffee or just to taste some good coffee and tasty cakes and pastries. But above all else, visit for the cold brew.
