    Everything bagel

5 & Dime is the closest you can get to a New York Bagel in Australia. Delicious boiled then baked bagels that are just as they should be, slightly crispy on the outside and chewy in the inside. So good that they do not need to be toasted. While 5 & Dime offers a small selection of spreads cream cheese, lox (smoked salmon) etc, it's really all about the bagels here. without a doubt these are the best New York-style bagels in Melbourne (much better than Glick's even). While at 5 & Dime, be sure to also get a rugelach--it's like a jewish mini croissant shaped pastry filled with chocolate goodness. So good! Note the shop is quite small and a bit hard to find, down an alleyway, of course, near King Street. If it was in a better location (ie on the other end of the CBD) I'd go daily!

Tucked down an alleyway is where you will find this haven of bagel delights. It is part of the new-ish Archway precinct of cafes and restaurants. I seriously think the bagel I had here is one of the best I have ever had. I've been to New York and had bagels there and this beats that. Go Melbourne! The lovely Wanda helped me order and made the bagel! I ordered the Lox ($9.50) and it was so damn good. Lox, tomato, onion, cream cheese, capers... Great value! The sesame bagel was chewy and slightly crunchy. Just the way I like it. I am seriously impressed and will be heading back soon to try everything else on their menu!

I spent six months living in Montreal as a teenager and after eating hundreds of bagels, I became slightly obsessed. On my return to Australia, I was disappointed with the quality we were able to get. They just weren't the same, though I still bought them and tried to fill the bagel shaped hole inside of myself. I bought a caramel coloured Burmese kitten and called it Bagel; such was my obsession. 5 & Dime's Bagels are made in the New York style, which I've also come to love after visits to the US. I first started buying their bagels at farmer's markets and love that I can now visit the store in the city to sit and eat a bagel slathered with cream cheese or filled with the likes of smoked turkey or pastrami (there's two daily sandwich specials). The store itself it small, and no doubt there will be a line if you visit during peak hours, but it's a straightforward process and the line moves quickly enough. Don't expect your bagel to come toasted. These bad boys are so fresh they don't need it.

It's a strange world we live in when I can safely say I have had better 5 & dime bagels at other cafés than the ones I have had here. Don't get me wrong - they are all made here so logically they should all taste the same - but the way they prepare them just does not live up to the bagel goodness they could be dishing out. For example when I order a bagel from Bowery to Williamsburg I get it freshly toasted and slightly crisp but still chewy in the middle (as it should be). Also the cream cheese or other toppings taste fresh, healthy and delicious. When I get the same here and see them just open a tub of average tasting cream cheese, sprinkle some random toppings on and wrap it up I don't get the same sense of value or taste. I do like the staff, they are very relaxed but not overly chatty, the interiors are a little plane but it is wonderful to watch the working bakery right behind the counter. Coffee is good. I just think they need to up their toppings game to make me choose this place again over countless other great bagel options in the city. Still worth checking out.

So this store is something I wish we had back in Adelaide! Bagels are one of those things that you really need talent and training to make perfectly. 5 and Dime mixes talent with passion. Minimalist in store, but the star of the show is the product and being able to see the bakers at work! You have an awesome view of the kitchen. You almost feel like you are witnessing art taking form. Staff are friendly and easy going. I munched down on a poppy seed bagel with cured salmon, a heap of house made cream cheese and avocado. What can I say? Fresh and perfectly made. Simple comfy flavours and food. Just like a bagel should be. Also, I was full up to get me through my morning. I will recommend this to my friends on a visit to Melbourne. Keep it up!

    Pastrami on rye $11!!

I've had this place bookmarked for a few weeks as I've heard it had the best bagels in town...I disagree! I made the pilgrimage to visit this place and couldn't wait to get stuck into it but when I unwrapped my pastrami on rye bagel all I was filled with was disappointment! 1 slice of pastrami and a couple of pickles for $11 I felt robbed! The bagel tasted fine but come on guys fill it up a bit!

Jalapeño and cheese bagel with cream cheese.

Bagels. Bagels dominated my Melbourne trip. Because they're great. I like things simple, so I went for a jalapeño and cheese bagel with a cream cheese filling. I was hoping for a chilli and cream cheese filling but that wasn't available but I I was happy with the jalapeño aspect of the bagel. The venue is cool. Everything was on display nicely and you were able to see everything that was available the second you walked up to the counter. There were small tables and a low window bar to sit at and there was a mix of people waiting for take away and those sitting in to eat. I got takeaway as I had things to do, and I also worry about my control levels; if I sat in I think I would just keep ordering different bagels and different fillings. My order was ready quickly, but not too fast and I was eager to smash my bready, boiled goodness as I walked to a meeting. It was great - a little too much cream cheese for my liking (I know, I didn't know it could be a thing) so I pulled my two halves apart and schmeared the filling across both halves. Then it was perfect! One thing I really liked was that the baker was on site and separated only by a glass wall. I liked seeing him work, it gave some extra authenticity to the process and I find the process quite interesting. Will definitely be returning to eat more bagels and get some coffee next time.

Decent flat white, served with raw sugar (nice touch).

Check in on Yelp before placing your order and get 10% off! Large flat white + cinnamon 'babka' = $9.50. The spot is known for its boiled (NY style) bagels but I came for a mid morning coffee and something sweet. I lived in Montreal for 15 years, so aside from St. Viateur bagels I don't eat them anywhere else. On top of serving different flavour bagels with stuff, 5 & Dime typically have 3-4 types of fresh pastry on hand. Average prices $4 for most sweet baked goods. Ordered a flat white, coffee is within the range I call decent. The cinnamon roll (babka) was ok too. It has a pronounced taste of another spice I can't put my finger on, which I'm not so into. Noise level exacerbated by bad acoustics. Not fun to sit in. I read really good Yelp reviews for this place but sadly I don't share the enthusiasm this time. For me, 5 & Dime was a tad more than just passable... People in Melbourne are used to mediocre food is my guess.

French toast Bagel to die for! My goodness! The maple syrup and apple crisp as a garnish will blow your mind away! All good breakfast bagel flavour that we have today, Guys, I'll be back next time when I'm visiting Melbourne

Awesome bagels and decent coffee. I was told about the inch thick cream cheese by my partner; which was delivered. Smoked salmon was fresh and generous, as was the tomato; and zataar (oregano and sesame with olive oil) type top baked into what was described as their most sourdough type bagel. It came with a side of chips and a pickle. Great breakfast on the run. There's also a window to the kitchen so you can see the staff rolling and baking the bagels on site. Nom nom nom.

Amazing fresh bagels, such a variety to choose from, plus bagel sandwiches to choose from with different fillings. On this morning we ordered 2 coffees and just shared a buttered bagel which was slightly toasted, it was so good the butter oozed from the bagel. Was impressed by how huge the bakery actually was which is bigger than the actual cafe itself. It's good how you can see the bakers making all the bagels - all while you eat them.

I tried their Hot Chocolate & dessert cake, called "Monte Carlo". It's a Chocolate mousse with cafe creme & chocolate biscuit covered with milk chocolate glaze. The glaze outside was shinny, smooth, and light, which is perfect for me. Texture, creamy, but not too sweet. Dessert was great, and Hot Chocolate too. Located in the city, 5 to 7 minutes away from Flinders Street railway station by train (Melbourne, Victoria). A cute, nice, fancy French bakery/cafe in the city, nothing can be better than spend a free day with your friends/love/family at Laurent. Services and staffs are great! I didn't have to wait for long, they take good order, and give you great recommendations, and ask for your opinions after. Customers will always feel welcomed, and happy when the staffs are always smiling. Overall, great place + dessert! Try it out, if you have a chance, definitely worth it. Love and miss this place.

All that time I could have been enjoying wonderful, delicious cakes. This place has an older fashion vibe that feels like you're at grandma's place. The back wall is covered in old beaters (the kind before electricity), simple furniture, quiet neighbourhood, and everyone is friendly! Even the customers are really friendly to other customers. It makes for such a good community feel. They have such a great variety of cakes on offer, all made on site. Some are hard to find though. They usually have a list on the wall near the till saying what's on offer. Two things to look out for: Glim Glams and vanilla slice. The Glim Glams are their (better) version of Tim Tams with 24c gold leaf, hence the name, and they are amazing. The vanilla slice I often describe as the best vanilla slice on the planet. Better than my mums! I've had them from Aussie bakeries to French patisseries but no one is as good as Beatrix. The pastry is the perfect balance of flaky, buttery, and stability. The custard is the perfect texture and the passion fruit icing is genius! The right amount of sweetness but with delicious sourness that cuts through everything. Damn they are so good! If a paragraph just on their vanilla slice wasn't enough to make you want to go then I'll eat your vanilla slice for you!
