However, I did spend quite a bit of time perusing their selection. It is notably the first place I've seen in Australia to offer the new Ben and Jerry's dairy-free ice cream (which I had no room to try, sadly). They make a variety of fresh sandwiches and things, offer premade pastries and such, and sell a variety of hard to find goods. As with most vegan stores, it's pricey and something of a luxury, but a nice one to have. I would not, however, suggest that any non-Australian try anything with vegemite. I know I'm writing this place a positive review, but that stuff is pretty gross.

Smith and deli is no exception. The variety of sandwiches alone, and alllll vegan pointedly, is outstanding. I went with the "bacon" and "chicken" schnitzel sandwich with ranch lettuce and tomato and it was fantastic. I'm not even vegan and can tell you that if nobody had told me it was vegan, I'd have thought it was the real deal. They have a great selection of vegan products from around the globe too. It's excellent with walk in space after entering and the inside tables show off comfortable seating. (I did wonder if the small steps at the entry might be considered unfriendly to the disabled or mommy pram?) It was quiet and only two other people inside. I ordered a lemongrass tea and scrambled eggs on sourdough rye. First thing, I certainly love tea and have an affinity for even the most unloved types of tea, but... The cup that came with the tea just doesn't work for proper appreciation! The cup should be a proper tea cup... At least a mug! Instead I was given a 2inch tall 1inch wide glass cup that was difficult to pick up once I wanted to sip my tea cause it had no handle and was hot. And finally the presentation of my breakfast reminded me of home economics class... When you first learn to make a dish you worry about how it looks on the plate so it somewhat looks as if it has invisible walls keeping it at bay from each other on the plate... That's what it represented. I feel that the eggs should have been on the toast, but since I wanted butter it was left off the toasted sourdough and put on the side. I thought most restaurants here in Melbourne would put the butter on the toast (if it's sourdough) and then put the eggs of choice on that toast. I normally order scrambled and I feel I know scrambled eggs best. These scrambled eggs were a touch runny and not as firm as I feel they should be. Overall, the inside set up, service, and spacious room makes for a place I'd go back to for maybe a coffee instead of hot tea and salad (since there is so many choices at the counter in the display) instead of scrambled eggs on sourdough toast.

On the pricey end for a sandwich but well worth it. Beautiful sandwich arrived - pictured - with a side of pickle and a scoop of patato salad with dill and caper. The pastrami was the proper stuff - think Jewish style corned beef. Red kraut has perfect vinegary texture and was crunchy and magnificent. The sandwich was juicy and oozing with piquant Dijon. After a sandwich like this for lunch, no dinner is required! Nice fitout here if you want to sit in, and they do takeaway too. Mel P., explained it all. Their downstairs is for the daytime deli, upstairs is dinner at Longhorn Saloon. Being the sister of Le Bon Ton, you see lots of meaty options from Le Bon Ton itself. Came here for a Good Beer Week event with Sixpoints Brewery and had a dreamy time. (Sixpoints Brews at 5 Point Deli! I just got that.) The special was a Sixpoint brew accompanied by a jerk chicken burger for $20. How could I resist? The burger was so good, the chicken wasn't overcooked and was jerk seasoned to juicy perfection. Their appetizer of fried chicken tenders was so yummy, and came with a cheesy biscuit and cracked pepper white gravy. This was my first time seeing southern-style gravy at a restaurant in Australia, so obviously, I was stoked, that biscuit and gravy combo took me straight back home, and I loved it. I already prefer this venue over Le Bon Ton. Not too compare siblings or anything, because Le Bon Ton has a lot to offer, but I thought this menu was more intriguing. Love the setting, it's not dark and voodoo-ish, like Le Bon Ton. There's a sunroof portion letting in natural light, with wood everything. Staff was hands down, amazing. Every single host/waiter/waitress/manager was friendly and so welcoming. Seriously, even the barman greeted us with hello. I couldn't tell you the last time I had such a good customer service experience like that. Can't wait to come back to explore this menu further.

We're talking melt-in-your-mouth smoky pastrami, smoky turkey breast and reubens like you've never seen. Having had the smoked meat poutine at upstairs Longhorn, it took me a fair amount of restraint not to get this (it's listed as a side but is a meal in its own unless you have enough people to share!) ...but I was here to try the sandwiches. Thankfully I brought along my partner in crime so we could go splitsies on two. We ordered the "world famous smoked pastrami" and the turkey club. Which they could also get away with calling "best club sandwich in town". Both were huge (not side-splitting ridiculous) sandwiches, served with a mound of seasoned crisps and a pickle. Come hungry though. Both were so delicious. The turkey club was my personal favourite and shouldn't be overlooked in all the excitement over the pastrami. The pastrami is thick, smokey and not like any other I've had in Melbourne. Thicker than what they use on the poutine. I love pickles, but must admit I throw a lot away when people try to offer them up at American style places. Not here though, they are perfect. I ate both of them. They also offer an All You Can Eat Buffet Breakfast here. I'm not sure if that has started yet or what's on offer (maybe call first to check!), but if it's half as good as lunch I think big breakfast eaters and buffet breakfast fans will be mighty pleased.

Let's start with the coffee, whilst not the best I've had was perfectly serviceable for a sunday morning. Where this place did excel though was the food. We ordered the eggs Benny with bacon and the ricotta hot cakes. When the food arrived we were blown away. The eggs Benny had the creamiest sauce with perfect poached eggs atop a delicious sour dough infused with rosemary. The hot cakes though we're the star. Enormous with a huge helping of mascarpone, perfectly poached pears, lemon curd and sprinkled with biscuit crumbs. Order it! We will be back to try the rest of the menu. We both ordered the chicken schnitzel (with cheese, red pesto, rocket & mayo for $10) and I got mine on a lot bagel and toasted. They're freshly made right at the counter and the staff have a super chilled but professional vibe - they were so precise about putting the toppings together, I was very impressed. We only had to wait about 5 minutes and then I was in bagel heaven - not only was the bagel amazing but the schnitzel was perfect and I loved the combination of flavours. For me there was a little too much red pesto but that was easily sorted out with a knife. I loved this place and am hoping to return for a second bagel-scoffing lunch before I head back to Glasgow.

They've got an extensive selection of bagel sandwiches on the menu, as well as great coffee and some sweet options too. Not much room for dining in, but it's a perfect spot to grab on the go! Definitely recommend the salmon and cream cheese on an everything or sesame seed bagel. Staff are always so friendly too!
