Cold brew coffee from the nitro tap
Jen S.

I found myself at Aunty Pegs on a sunny Sunday, when in search of a place to show off Melbourne's coffee culture. (Aunty Pegs is the roaster for Pope Joan.) The venue did not disappoint. Our mustached coffee server was excellent - chatty and informative without being overbearing. We were also given a quick brief about the set-up, as it was our first time there. The coffee is served black, which was perfect for us. But I imagine they've had a more then a few people come through the doors desiring lattes. It turned out to be a great place to pull up a seat at the bar and have a chat. Considering the holy allegiance to the church of brunch in Melbourne, Aunty Pegs was happily uncrowded. (But there were still enough people passing though to keep things lively.) The menu features a small rotating list, with tasting flights available. When we visited there were three coffees from Honduras plus a cold brew nitro on tap. I loved the beer-like quality from the nitro tap, but my coffee expert companion thought the quality would have been better sans nitro tap. The spacious venue also sells a variety quality coffee wares to stock your kitchen.

Cold brew.

Pull up a chair and hang out at the bar listening to the awesome vinyl collection. It's not negronis and beers you'll be drinking here though, but rather coffee. Black, specialty, coffee. The environment is chilled out, but don't come here expecting to be here for hours. While it's relaxed, there's no food on offer and there's only so much caffeine you can drink right? If you want to make coffee at home, you'll also be able to buy your beans and equipment here.

As I waited for my friends I perused their menu of non pronounceable dishes. I got the zucchini haloumi fritter with hazelnut and warercress salad. My skim cappucino was great but the food was not. My fritter was raw mushy and tasteless. And I only got one. No cheese was found. My friends beetroot salad just tasted like bottled beetroot. No flavours. My other friend ordered a burger and didn't like the burger bun Quite disappointing They are no longer affiliated with ygap. There was no feast and their food was not of merit

In addition to taking care of your insides, Feast of Merit is also a YGAP initiative, which means all profits are put back into youth and leadership projects locally and in third world communities. It's feel-good food with a feel-good outcome. The space is large and airy, the perfect place to unwind over breakfast, lunch or dinner. I came for breakfast, but it appears they've got a few beers on tap and a bar so I am keen to check out their evening offerings. For breakfast I was torn between their 'Yeusli' (Organic puffed quinoa, chia seeds, activated buckwheat, figs, goji berries, pomegranate seeds, coconut flakes, almonds, currents, raw cinnamon, your choice of milk on the side) and one of their incredible looking smoothies. I opted for the Yeusli and had no regrets. Delicious, super-charged with raw food goodness and a reasonably-sized, filling portion. No overload of oats and yoghurt like most cafe muesli offerings. Normally I don't give 5 stars if the coffee isn't amazing, but I loved the different food offering and concept enough to bump it back up. Coffee is totally fine but the black coffee is not amazing. If you're a latte drinker you probably won't notice at all and there's the bonus of being able to choose different milks if you're not into soy or lactose. The staff were friendly and accommodating, all menu items were well priced and can feed you for $15 or less. Winner.

Mmmmm, lunch! 7…read moreGrams sure knows how to hit the spot. I used to venture here quite regularly for lunch when I worked down the road on Church Street. And I ventured back again the other day when I was in the area and hunger struck. And boy am I glad I did. They have lots of options: sandwiches, wraps, focaccia & a selection of hot food. None of which I have tried because of the incredible range of super tasty salads on offer. And these aren't your boring green tasteless salads. Think falafel, brown rice, roasted sweet potato, Greek, tuna, quinoa, freekah, potato, tabouli, beetroot and more! Choose your size (small or large), to have in (for an extra $1) or take away and then pick which ones you want. They load them into your container and away you go. I've tried many different ones, this last time included 4 types: roast sweet potato, freekah, tabouli & falafel salad - a bit of a middle eastern slant, totally delicious and healthy to boot, getting in a good couple of serves of veggies for lunch! I couldn't finish the whole thing (large takeaway container) so I ate half and saved the rest for alongside dinner that evening. Delish! I've also heard great things about the coffee, but haven't tried it myself. They are only open Monday to Friday, but they open super early (pre 6am) for your pre work coffee. There are a few outdoor tables that are good for a sunny day, but no room inside to sit and eat so you might need to takeaway if the weather ain't great. Friendly & efficient service tops it all off. Highly recommend you check it out if you work in the area or are passing through!

Roasted almost to heavenly perfection each sip of my skinny milk latte was silky smooth. Definitely a winner in my books!
