Being in charge of my younger sister's birthday dinner was feeling a little overwhelming until the *very* conveniently timed grand opening of Transformer! As a Vegetarian, my sis has always been a huge fan of Vegie Bar, but we needed somewhere a little fancier for a special occasion, and this place was perfect. Firstly can I just say, the design is absolutely gorgeous. Whoever is responsible for this place has done such a beautiful job. For a warehouse space the noise levels are really great, thanks in part to the separation of dining areas by huge fence walls covered in climbing plants. It's going to look even more stunning once they've grown up a bit. Food is all vegetarian, and split between starters, small plates, salads, main plates and desserts. For somewhere that is fine dining, you're doing pretty well when meals are less than $20! All of the dishes are weird, and in a good way! Great flavours, plated up so nicely and just really interesting, which is exactly what you want from somewhere like this. It's fine dining vegetarian without the crazy price tags of somewhere similar that serves meat. We shared the pumpkin-tahini dip with rye-quinoa chips ($7) from the starters, and they were deeeelish. Amazing dip. Such great flavour. We also shared the ricotta and eye gnocchi with lentils, pumpkin mousse and blueberry compote ($15). This dish was so so pretty to look at and very delicious. Not the best sharing dish for four people as I wanted more, but very yum and a surprising mix of ingredients that worked well together. Our other shared dish was the roasted sweet potato with coconut yogurt, lime and togarashi. ($9) Also yummy, and a perfect one to share. After our 3 starters we each got our own main- They're smallish, but the combo of starters and mains was a perfect size. I had the green curried polenta with wild rice, thai pesto and coconut reduction ($16). A little spicy but very delicious! Others on the table had the eggplant with Meredith goat's feta, grapes and lentils ($17). The warmed grapes were a strange sight but everyone enjoyed! The eggplant itself was really good. Someone else also had the brown rice and beetroot risotto ($18) which was sweeter than expected but also delicious. I'm pretty annoyed we didn't try any desserts because they look phenomenal, but we had a cake waiting for us at home! The staff were all lovely, we had a tiny mix up where the waiter thought we were sharing all the dishes, so my main arrived much later than the others, but it was easily forgiven. Worth dropping by here- They take bookings so shoot them an email to secure your spot, as I have a feeling they'll be busy for awhile. Really nice date night vibe too! I don't think I could ever become a Vegetarian myself, but there's certainly flavours and meals at Transformer that make you forget about being a meat-eater while you're there. Well done to the team.

This is truly an upmarket fine dining vegetarian eatery.. in smart, but semi casual surroundings. The food is simply sensational! The flavour combinations have been carefully put together and they work really well. Most of the items on the menu have changed since our last visit a few months ago, so we had lots of new and interesting dishes to try. We had the popular pumpkin and tahini dip (I hope this stays on the menu full time!), then we tried corn fritter chips, King oyster, Brussels sprouts and roasted cauliflower salad. All were beautifully presented and tasted really good, but the standout fish was the roasted leek. So simple, but each bite was melt in the mouth and absolutely to die for! I really hope they keep this item on the menu. They also have an interesting list of beer, wine and cocktails. The bar staff are artists at preparing and presenting the cocktails. The Bellini and Kawaii 5-0 that I tried were lovely. All in all a really lovely dinner, but yes, the serves are small as they are all tapas style tasting plates, meant to be shared, but this means you can try a lot of options. The prices reflect the quality of the food, so we were happy to pay... We walked in on a Wednesday night without reservation and there were still a few tables available to choose from, so worth a try if you haven't pre-booked, but I would strongly recommend booking on the weekend.

Great place but a little bit to expensive... the place itself is probably one of the best places I have been to based on inferior... we were 4ppl and 5 out of 8 main dishes to share. The waitress was nice and mentioned per person at least 3dishes which will leave it bank empty :) that said great for a first date or a nice dinner date with friends ...

This is a very cool vegetarian restaurant. It's the sister restaurant to Vegie Bar which is next door. It's a little more formal and a little quieter than Vegie Bar. The food is different but just as good. They have smaller dishes that are meant to be shared. I had the soba noodles which was delicious. The vegan chocolate mousse cake looked like a work of art when brought out. I loved that too.

Such amazing tasting food.

OMG... amazing flavours. Recommend to Vegan, vegetarian and non vegetarian eaters. Waiter got one of our dishes wrong but it was just as amazingly flavoured. So it did not matter. Nom nom nom.

For those vegetarians/vegans who are just looking for deep fried Cauliflower, Tofu and faux meats this place isn't for you. Yes they actually cook here and use a blend of cooking techniques to get the best out of their fresh produce. This comes at a cost of course, but well worth it as the interior is well designed, intimate and chic.

Don't overlook the Brownie!

Goodbye Der Raum... hello Bar Economico!…read more Gone are the days of $20+ cocktails that take almost as much time to make as an episode of Friends. Instead, Matthew Bax has opened a cheap, cheerful, tongue-in-cheek dive bar where everything is bought with pre-paid tickets and you're made to feel like you're drinking in some third world country. Visit the "managers" booth at the back and buy a collection of tickets at $5 each. They're only valid for the night you're there, so don't go crazy until you know you're in for a serious session. With shots and beer starting at 1 ticket (that's $5 people!) all the way up to 4 tickets for the super boozie Zombie cocktails, there's something priced for everyone. The most popular cocktails seem to be those around the $10 mark. They're quick to be made, with a lot of the booze pre-mixed in bottles and then built in a plastic up filled with ice. While the focus is on affordable booze, the quality is certainly not dropped. Drinks are garnished properly and the liquor is of a good quality. Service is chatty and efficient and luckily they're safely held behind the bar "cage" because some of those bartenders are smokin' hot and I imagine the ladies might get out of control. The ambiance? I felt like I was participating in an art installation rather than experiencing a bar. Is this a good thing? Maybe not for every night of the week but if you're after something fun and different then give it a whirl. The music is crazy electro-jazz-swingy and keeps the spirits high. The crowd is cool, arty and hipster-y.

Either way, it has such potential but I just didn't experience the potential greatness when I went in one quite Saturday night. They operate off a ticket system with one ticket equalling $5.50, which is really cool, if they actually utilised this system, however they didn't & from what I hear they don't often, which kind of ruins the whole vibe as the drinks lists don't actually tell you what is in the drinks nor the prices, just how many tickets each drink is worth. It is a very small area with tables randomly placed around & you have to stand in awkward areas such as in front of the bathroom entrance or hover around the bar with no stools for you to sit on. I will for sure go back & give it another shot because I wouldn't say I don't like the place, maybe it was just a bad night? Not sure, my cocktail was nice & I really want to be cool enough to go there haha.

However I don't mind the place, it just seems to be a little more classier than what I tend to like. They do have quite a nice beer garden, as well as some decent beers on tap, but I tend to walk past this one to the two pubs that happen to have rooftop decks that happen to be on the other side of the railway line. Sure, it does seem to be quite popular, and there have been times that the place has been absolutely packed, and I don't actually mind it all that much, however the atmosphere, and the fact that there are better places in the vicinity mean that I usually give this place a miss.

On the one occasion we were here, our friend knew the doormen and we were let in. The bar/pub itself is quite a big area decked out with plasma TVs and quite snazzy decor. The courtyard area is pretty nice and a great spot to get some air. We were there on a Friday night and there was a cover band playing. Although they were pretty cheesy and played even cheesier tunes, I have to admit it was pretty fun. It's not really my scene if I'm honest but good times were had all the same.

It's one of our 'footy pubs' that me and my mates frequent before and after games - a 10 min walk to the MCG seemingly scaring off the bogan throngs that must filter in places closer to the ground. Staff is always friendly and welcoming, it's vibrant without being too busy, and the pub grub has never let me down yet. Ideally they would add a few more taps and beer variety, or at least rotate more frequently to mix things up, but it's a small complaint. Yet to partake in a trivia night yet but one started up around us recently and it looked like good fun that we'll likely come back to try.
