Patatas with chorizo
Katherine O.

Needing a semi rushed dinner before a talk we decided to try out Smith & Daughters. Knowing they had opened only a week before I decided to book a table and it was lucky I did. Arriving at 6 the place looked empty but they told me that they were fully booked for the night. (The place was fully packed by mid meal) Upon first looking at the menu I was slightly confused as words such as tuna and chorizo popped out... But my dining companion had already asked and it was certainly all vegan. I must admit normally I don't like faux meat.. What's the point of eating something that resembles meat?! But after this meal I will never say a bad word about it again. We ordered the tamales, patatas bravas with chorizo, tuna and pea croquettes, and the chillies rellenos. The tuna and pea croquettes were the standout. Absolutely divine! I'm still thinking about them 3 hours post meal. Unfortunately we were in a rush so didn't get to order desert. But there'll definitely be another dinner booked there soon. Easily the best meat free meal on Brunswick St!

Stinger

I was quite looking forward to this place with all the food reviews but was grossly disappointed. It's a dark gloomy place. doesn't help when it's actually nice and sunny outside. It feels cold inside. Yes it has nice wooden tables, cute salt and pepper shakers and interesting hot sauces like the stinger, but that doesn't cut it. Yes service is quick. Portion sizes are large. It is Mexican themed and all vegan. Both my brunch companion and I got the brekkie burrito with black beans and tofu and with a side of guac.it is quite bland. I had to douse it in salt and pepper and actually got tired of eating it. My brekkie companion didn't finish his burrito. Don't think he liked it much either. Additionally, coffee only comes with soy, oat, almond (additional charge) and cashew milk. If you're not going to offer cow's milk at least don't charge additional for the milk. Oat milk is disgusting. I don't like soy milk. And I'm not paying additional 2 bucks for cashew milk which will make a small cup of coffee cost 5.50. Insane. Coffee is feral. Service is quick. Staff are nice. Drinks menu is extensive.

Breakfast burrito

Breakfast Burrito. That's all you need to know before you visit Smith & Daughters for brunch on a weekend. Sure, you can get a Bloody Mary, fresh juice or coffee (go black unless you're down with non-dairy milk) depending on your level of tiredness/hangover but the thing you want to eat is the burrito. It's one of the tastiest things to eat for breakfast and amazingly they make it with not a single animal product. My favourite +1 couldn't believe that something so tasty didn't include bacon! There's other options of course, and in the evening it's more tapas style, but my favourite time to visit is on the weekend for brunch. The staff are warm and friendly and the vibe is always relaxed. Bring your newspaper and bestie and enjoy some healthy(ish) cuisine with a giant pitcher of freshly squeezed juice.

Their signature drink - Cucumber, jalapeño and coriander margarita
Lindsay W.

Get off the couch and get here now! You guys, seriously every thing we had was amazingly tasty, leaving us wanting more. Myself & two other gals split the jalapeño Mac & Cheese, Champinones Al Ajillo (mushrooms in a creamy sauce) with toasted bread (I don't even like mushrooms but my oh my was this flavorful and amazing) and the layered queso & chips all washed down with their smooth signature cucumber, jalapeño & coriander margarita. Omg all were incredible!! No photos of the food - was too busy devouring it! Booking is a good idea if you don't want to sit at the community table and no split bills so bring cash!

Nice collection of hot sauce! Perfect for tacos!

Best vegetarian Mexican restaurant ever! Ok, so vegetarian Mexican food don't come up often or ever, but this place is fantastic. We ordered quite a few dishes and sat at the bar on a busy Friday night with no reservations. On the top of the list was the nachos. It was made with jackfruit that looked like pulled pork and cheesy sauce was poured on top with guacamole. The other top rated item was the mushrooms. They had a really nice thick brown gravy and my only complaint was I didn't get enough bread to eat the gravy. The mushrooms were good, but elevated by the gravy. The cocktails were very good too and they made us a passion fruit pistachio mezcal that was not only delicious, but was very original. We ordered some other items that were also good so make sure you try the other items. I never missed the meat and I was perfectly happy with the food. They also server brunch on Saturday and Sunday until 5:00 PM. I will be back to try their brunch! Thanks Smith & Daughters and keep up the good work!

Back feature wall
Jennifer N.

Not sure how to describe the artistic slant of this place. There was a back feature wall which I didn't look into much detail until I saw this window sill full of crosses and Marys. The back wall was full of frames and pictures that are probably tied closely to Latin America; religion and art. It's wooden tables and classic water jugs makes you feel like you are in the old school Latin America. We had a delicious French toast with quince fruit....yummy! A glass of wine to top it off. They seem to have an colourful and extensive bar too! Worth a visit!

Lots of places think they can just whip up vegan food these days - and there are usually only one or two vegan items on any menu in Melbourne and some of them are not great. Smith & Daughters not only offer a whole vegan menu but it is also really, really good food. They have the rare talent of coming up with exciting new ways to make vegan food interesting and delicious - and even if you think "anyone can make a vegan salad" well, you are wrong because not everyone can or would even think of making a caesar salad like S&D do! Only down side is that they are busy, and therefore you have to turn over your table within an hour. This also equates to inattentive wait staff - they could have sold me an extra glass of wine but it was hard to catch anyone's attention to ask for a refill! This is a small complaint though.

Doubly excited that they have an entire wall devoted hot sauces and condiments for said creations. Triply excited that, despite their name sake, there are vegetarian options on the menu. But just because it's vegetarian, it makes no pretense that it's healthy. That fried tofu sandwich comes topped with vegetarian chilli and gooey, guilty-pleasure American cheese. Plus the option to have it all seated on top of a big pile of fries. You can save money for more beer at the Catfish bar on Mondays, when the cheesesteaks are only $8 or $10 with fries. Order and pick-up at the back hatch. Then add a little heat with things like the chipotle bbq sauce and tomatillo & jalapeno, or just play it safe and stick with the basic tomato sauce & yellow mustard. There is no way you're walking out hungry after one of these.

Sippin' on Sam Adams and Founders Brews, when I saw the menu, I admit, I got a little carried away. I legit wanted to order it all. I saw food from home there that I hadn't seen in ages. The smokey BBQ wings were so tasty and cooked just right and not dry, they completely took me back to my favorite wing place in Miami. The mac-n-cheese croquettes fried in squares came out in threes and were crispy on the outside, gooey on the inside. I was just too overwhelmed getting to order classic mac-n-cheese. Yep, I'm one of those girls. And it was fried. Uh extra yasss, I'm all for it. It's 4th of July and you know Americans love us some fried food. To top off the night was a fried Twinkie. It's not over done like some places but just nice and easy on the eyes. And the staff were all great. You surprised me. The last time…read morewe did this was to the Melbourne BBQ Festival at the Victoria Markets where we were immensely disappointed. We were determined on this Valentines Day evening for a Melbourne BBQ redemption, and Ike's did not let us down. We were seated straight away, and our waitress (I think her name was Katie) was an absolute hoot. She had my wife in stitches with laughter. The jokes were just bouncing back and forth until we eventually ordered. I ordered a half pound of pork ribs, whereas the other half went the lamb ribs. Between us, we shared home made cornbread & a salsa dish. I honestly did not have enough time to grab my phone to check in on social media sites, and BANG!!! The food was served. There is no way to describe what sort of party my taste buds were having in my mouth, however this party could have made some serious money on cover charges to this party. The cornbread was nothing like I have tasted before, and after visiting diners in 34 American States which I have visited, this cornbread leaves the rest for dead. The salsa with its secret little ingredients was hard to put down, and then the meat. It just melted in your mouth. When we initially started talking to the waitress she asked if we had been to Le Bon Ton in Richmond as a comparison, where she explained that Ike's is better. They had no daily specials so the Brussels sprouts, watermelon salad and corn salad not to mention the bean kimchi accompaniments were all gone. In their place was a potato waffle and chicken gravy which were good but not great and roasted red peppers which I thought was the best thing we ate. Our half pound of pork ribs looked pretty lonely served on some baking paper on a metal lunch tray with some cabbage and I kind of felt a little like I was in jail or a canteen. Whilst it was a bit more practical space wise it really lost it's appeal for me. All in all I had difficulty deciding what to eat from the menu because I don't love the smokiness of ribs and mainly ate the sides which were good just not great. I'd drop it to a 3.5 stars and not too sure I'd be back but my partner gives it a 4 stars.

I have to say, THIS is by far.... THE BEST recommendation we've ever received! The restaurant was a tad bit difficult to find, having not been to Australia and not being familiar with basement restaurants, lol. It had quite a unique secluded vibe from the moment the door swung open. The atmosphere was almost hypnotic! There weren't too many patrons eating when we arrived .. but we did arrive shortly after opening. By the time we were finished the tables were 75% occupied, I think in part to only being open for dinner Tuesday-Saturday. The food, as well as the service were both TOP NOTCH! I don't typical care for red meat... but I ordered steak and it was extremely well-prepared! So delicious!!! I asked for it to be well done! It DID come out charcoaled so I made a comment to my husband that was over-heard by the chef, himself! Moments later, he personally delivered a new dinner plate to me with a replacement! Now THAT'S what I call top-notch service! I REALLY wish Meatmaiden would expand to the US! That would be the icing on the cake!!!

The Beef Fat Butter was awesome. My spouse didn't care for it but I adored it. - Grilled Wagu NY Strip was 330+ day grain fed which only intensified the marble and added so much taste. Not a bite left and it was almost 13 ounces of pure meat. It was perfectly cooked to medium rare (-) temperature. It came with a choice of a sauce and we paid for an additional one. The Three Pepper Sauce and the Beef Fat Bernaise. Both were awesome. I need the recipes! - GEM Lettuce Salad with radishes and dressed with a Burnt Grapefruit Vinaigrette. The vinaigrette made the salad. - Hand Cut Chips w/ a Garlic Aioli - another perfect taste. The chips had a great crispy outside with a very smooth inside. And the Aioli was addictive. Do no pass this great place by. We did not have reservations but should have. We got there early and they were slammed. We saw two empty tables and they offered us one by the front entrance. We eyed the other table and they said "if you can be finished in 1 1/2 hours...we laughed and said there would be no problem and probably be out of here in an hour! MeatMaiden was so upbeat. We just kept looking around in awe. Two old ladies eating in a basement. The atmosphere is awesome. Somewhat darkly lit but light enough to see your food. Very high energy crowd. Service was spectacular. Toward the end of our meal the hostess came over and said we could stay a bit longer. We said thanks but not needed. Highly recommend and also recommend making an advanced booking. Enjoy.
