Having been introduced to the wonders of Mexican food by a friend of mine, when I saw this place as I was wandering down Gertrude Street I decided that I would go straight inside and order a meal. Well, the first thing that I discovered is that this is a strictly vegeterian restaurant, so if you want meat in your Burrittos then you may need to make your way to the local Taco Bills. Anyway, having been to a few of the chain Mexican Restaurants that are appearing around the place, I was really keen on checking out something that was a part of a franchise. Well, this place turned up, and I have to say that it was pretty good. The Burrito, despite being vegetarian, was really nice. They also have beer available. However you should be aware that this place does get very, very crowded, and it isn't the largest of places around, so you may want the takeaway option.

We were in Melbourne for about 3 days, and though there were plenty of vegetarian places to eat at, we came here. Twice. TACOS. BURRITOS. QUESADILLA . I was in absolute heaven. Best of all, rather than saying "Oh, it's vegan without the cheese and sour cream", they use vegan cheese and sour cream upon request! What a novel concept! Staff weren't entirely friendly or helpful (and there was a loud radio playing, so the server could barely hear our order), but the food turned up pretty quickly and was absolutely delicious. Regardless of where we stay next time we're in Melbourne, we will be making the journey over to Trippy Taco again. And again.

Settled into their new home on Gertrude Street and this end of town just got a whole lotta more funky! Grab a table, grab your menu and if you can possibly choose between all of the amazing dishes on the list. You order at the counter and within moments amazing food will float in front of you and you can begin a trip into the vegetarian cantina of joy!! We order lots and lots for us all to share on our first trip to trippy! Quesidilla, large flour totilla with melted cheese and salsa, described as a bit like a big cheese toasty it is comfort food-tastic! Heaps of melted cheese and black beans hmmmmm!! Original Trippy Tacos are fresh, gorgeous corn tortillas with cheese, black beans, salad, salsa, avocado and a squeeze of lime! Yum!! It's a generous serve of super tasty, fabulous taco...... read more at my blog

Coming form California, I'm spoiled by access to great Mexican food. While I went in with what I hoped was realistic expectations, this just didn't cut it. The food was bland, expensive, and strange. Anyone who thinks this is "authentic" has never been to Mexico... We ordered a side of chips, salsa and guac. You pay $4.50 for chips, and then another $3.50 and $4.50 for the tiniest cups of bland dips. How did they managed to get the salsa so flavorless?! The main ingredients should be tomato, onion and jalapeño! And the guac had no flavor at all. The avocado on the tacos was also flavorless - they need a different source. (We had incredibly tasty guac with chunky corn chips at Vegi Bar.. go there instead.) Most of the flavor in the tacos came from the goat cheese placed on top. I love goat cheese, but I don't want this earthy cheese on my tacos. Cojita, a mild cow's cheese, is the traditional ingredient. The black bean tacos had raisins in them - why?! The tofu asada was also surprisingly lacking in flavour. In addition to these disappointing fillings, the tacos also had lettuce, more of the lame salsa, a slice of flavorless avocado and then the shaved goats cheese. As much as I appreciated the generous amount of fillings, it wasn't possible to eat the taco with one tortilla. It just made a huge mess. I assume the margaritas were made with cheap sour mix not fresh lime juice based on how they tasted. There's so much great (vegetarian) food in Melbourne for less money - don't bother with this place.

I went to the new Trippy Taco on Gertrude Street the other night (just round the corner from its previous location). It was pretty rammed and the food took a while to come. They also didn't have their liquor license just yet so we had to settle for sugary soft drinks. Despite these little nitpicks, the food once it arrived was delicious and the black beans were full of flavour. I'm a huge carnivore and don't usually go for vegetarian restaurants. However, Trippy Taco is filling despite the lack of meat and you don't feel like you are missing out on anything. For the most part in Melbourne, I find that Mexican restaurants are nothing special and rather expensive. Trippy Taco breaks this trend by being inexpensive and quite authentic (being from the UK, I have no idea If I'm honest). This place is a hit and will definitely become a regular haunt.

AMAZING! Trippy Taco is a fantastic place to go for when you want a cool Mexican feast. With so many options it's hard to choose and there is a massive appeal to the fact that it has vegetarian and vegan options as well. They cook and make everything on site and it's obvious, as it tastes wildly amazing. It's cool and intimate but they are moving positions to Gertrude St where they'll be able to handle its ever-growing popularity. I wouldn't go past Trippy Taco's as one of the better places to go out for Mexican. I love the little enchiladas and soft shelled burrito's we had! YUM!!!

This place is amazing. Hands down best tofu burrito I've ever had. Seasoning tastes like a chicken burrito but without the meat-guilt.

The shop itself is very unassuming - a diamond in the rough. Juanita (or who I assume is Juanita? Should have asked! ... ) was very friendly. She made us feel very welcome and ensured we had everything we needed. We tried the taco mix, pork and chicken tacos. The tortillas were rustic. They come with an array of sides (& plenty of them!) including a pineapple/cucumber salsa, a cabbage slaw, some diced onions, coriander, tomatillo with avocado and chipotle sauce. There was also a couple of Juanita's home made sauces on the table to use. We enjoyed it all! Although quite full we couldn't resist trying the salted caramel Cheezecake. It was really delicious, thick and rich but well balanced with the addition of yoghurt, honey, bitter chocolate and praline served with it. This is a vegan option FYI! BTW - Juanita's sells delicious sauces and spices to take away ... we just had to grab one. We'll definitely head back.

The chicken mole was the best I've had in Oz, as were the corn tortillas - the latter had real flavor and must have been prepared by someone who has eaten real ones for many years in Mexico. Don't be put off by the street scene outside. The place itself was cozy and service friendly.

It's a new kid on the block and boy does it get busy. Easy single table was packed, not to mention the people who put their name down to wait to get in. All of the people make the venue a little harder to hear, the kind of raise your voice to speak type deal. I like the floor to ceiling tile, be wary, it'll just take a second for your eyes to adjust to how white and sparkling clean everything looks. Drinks all come salt rimmed, even the can o' beer. The Diablo was good, nice with a black salt rim, it had tons of flavor going on, especially for something pre-made and coming from a tap. It was bold, smokey, meaty, and delicious. The guacamole, I haven't gotten used to yet, I'm used to it being...different, with more chunk and less sour cream smoothness. As for the tacos, I had the vegetarian (cauliflower, broccoli, chipotle) and the El Pastor (pork, guajillo, pineapple). Truth be told, the vegetarian was better than the pork. Which is strange, because any human being would think otherwise, pork vs veggies, that's a no brainer. But the pineapple on the El Pastor should've been a bigger slice to accompany the pork, seeing as that's all that's in the taco (besides the large salt crystals), and they do compliment each other so well. It shouldn't be a tiny taco that you are biting through to get to the good stuff, i.e. the bite-full of pineapple & pork combo. Maybe I'm being too hard on it. It's just a taco. The vegetarian though, had a boatload of flavor I was not expecting. No complaints there. The foldie (which is a quesadilla) is served on a slightly bigger plate, but you'll still need something else to fill you up. The tuna, was just like a tuna melt, really cheesy. I rarely order tostadas, on account of my fear of how messy it'll be to eat in public and the real life struggle of having it fall apart on me. Everything you order will come out one by one, and that can sometimes make it seem like service is slow. Especially as we sat there waiting for one persons order that was just lost in the halogen lights somewhere. Negative: service is slow, they are way busy, it's loud, servings are small- which can add up $ Good for: snacks & drinks at a pretty done out venue

Both were really tasty and while you can add chicken, fish, beef, pork or falafel to the Bim-Bap, it was enough for me as is. This particular outlet is massive, with mountains of seating to look after the lunch time crowds. Get here bang on noon if you want a table right away, otherwise you risk having to line up and wait a little while (though the speed of everything probably means you won't wait long). You can also pre-book for groups of 12 which is great if you want to come during the lunchtime rush with a big group of colleagues. Weekends are a bit dead. I went for a Sunday dinner and our group of 10 had no problem getting seating at 6pm. The selection of drinks is small but the house-made Agua Frescas and the cocktails using local spirits are fun and inventive. The Horchata is delicious and worth a try if you've not had it before. If you're a mad Mexican fan then the food at Fonda will let you down. There's not a lot of punchy flavours and some dishes fall short (the beef taco wasn't that great - the topping bitter) while others are surprisingly tasty though far from authentic (fish taco I'm looking at you). The chicken quesadilla is just plain boring if you ask me, but it great for kids or plain eaters. My advice? Choose wisely and go with the approach of sharing a number of dishes for a bigger variety of flavours.
