Decidedly average in every way. I should've trusted my instincts and avoid eating at places with pictures on their menu. The service is slow and inattentive (many people just gave up and left). The food is really bland and low quality. Not even the guacamole was freshly made. There is an option of mild, medium and hot. We tried the medium and it wasn't even mild. Even the hottest hot sauce (which is the only way to add flavour) wasn't even medium. I wouldn't come back here when there are so many better Mexican restaurants in the city.

Well, one Tuesday I wanted some Mexican so I went to this one place I have found after perusing the internet and to my disappointment it was shut. However, quite serendipitously, right around the corner was another Mexican restaurant, so I was going to get my Mexican fix after all (I find it really hard, when I have my mind set on something, to actually eat something different - I guess it is the way I wired). Anyway, I ended up having the Ensaladas, and a beer that wasn't Corona, and I have to say that it was really, really good. I'm definitely coming back (if I have the time that is, but then again I probably should try to make the time).

What a fantastic meal. The chilli con carne was delicious and the guacamole was superb, even spicier than the chilli. Even the $4 beer was terrific. Will most definitely come again

Another fantastic establishment. Got to come back for more food on the menu .... cheap imported Montereys beers at $4 too. Just not sure about the fascination of skulls and semi-naked (man/woman) with a ram head?

Pretty average Mexican food and a little over-priced for the quality. My mini burrito was filling enough for me but as usual their hottest wasn't hot enough. Also there was no cheese in it :( Having said that they use potatoes in the veg mix which was good! And they have $3 tinnies. Good enough but nothing to write home about.

Gorgeous Melbourne weekend weather plus a hankering for Mexican food saw a road trip (perhaps a slight exaggeration when you live 15 kms away) to Fitzroy to check out Hecho en Mexico as part of the Vegan Day Out weekend on Sunday. A perfect day for outside dining, my lunch time compadre and I grabbed a table on Brunswick street, and perused the menu for vegan options. I settled on the veganised Quesadilla (mild....for I am a spice wuss) while my friend chose the vegan version of the Burrito (hot...for she is the spice master). The food arrived fairly quickly, which was great, but while my Quesadilla was helped by the lashings of salsa I applied to it, it mostly tasted like a cheese toasty....a nice cheese toasty, but nonetheless....a cheese toasty. In retrospect, I should have perhaps paid the extra couple of dollars to up the ante to the 'Quesadilla Grande' so that 1. I could just say the word 'Grrrrrrrande' complete with trilled 'r', and 2. the fillings had more chance to balance out the cheesiness. Also, if it were mine to do over again, I may even have asked for the medium spicy version, rather than the mild to see if the cheese toasty comparison waned a little in my head. The burrito ordered by my lunch buddy was HOT (I had a little taste...then copious amounts of water), but a far tastier option than my Quesadilla. Both dishes looked rather plain when served though, and to be honest, for the price I think there are far tastier and more aesthetically pleasing Mexican adventures to be had just down the road a ways in Gertrude Street. Also, I am not sure how I feel about the Hecho en deco, some of the interior wall art was a little, um...Hannibal-esque? Still, staff were extremely friendly and helpful, and if you are OK with meh-xican and couldn't be bothered walking the extra blocks to Gertrude Street, then sure, go check out Hecho en Mexico (but perhaps opt for the medium spicy and extra fillings where possible).

Juanita's does a taco night on the first Friday of every month. We decided to check it out tonight…read more... and we weren't disappointed! The shop itself is very unassuming - a diamond in the rough. Juanita (or who I assume is Juanita? Should have asked! ... ) was very friendly. She made us feel very welcome and ensured we had everything we needed. We tried the taco mix, pork and chicken tacos. The tortillas were rustic. They come with an array of sides (& plenty of them!) including a pineapple/cucumber salsa, a cabbage slaw, some diced onions, coriander, tomatillo with avocado and chipotle sauce. There was also a couple of Juanita's home made sauces on the table to use. We enjoyed it all! Although quite full we couldn't resist trying the salted caramel Cheezecake. It was really delicious, thick and rich but well balanced with the addition of yoghurt, honey, bitter chocolate and praline served with it. This is a vegan option FYI! BTW - Juanita's sells delicious sauces and spices to take away ... we just had to grab one. We'll definitely head back.

The chicken mole was the best I've had in Oz, as were the corn tortillas - the latter had real flavor and must have been prepared by someone who has eaten real ones for many years in Mexico. Don't be put off by the street scene outside. The place itself was cozy and service friendly.

A lovely smile, thoughtful gestures such as bring us extra napkins when she saw that we'd used the already provided ones, knew the menu extensively and was able to read our table and make suggestions. It's a new kid on the block and boy does it get busy. Easy single table was packed, not to mention the people who put their name down to wait to get in. All of the people make the venue a little harder to hear, the kind of raise your voice to speak type deal. I like the floor to ceiling tile, be wary, it'll just take a second for your eyes to adjust to how white and sparkling clean everything looks. Drinks all come salt rimmed, even the can o' beer. The Diablo was good, nice with a black salt rim, it had tons of flavor going on, especially for something pre-made and coming from a tap. It was bold, smokey, meaty, and delicious. The guacamole, I haven't gotten used to yet, I'm used to it being...different, with more chunk and less sour cream smoothness. As for the tacos, I had the vegetarian (cauliflower, broccoli, chipotle) and the El Pastor (pork, guajillo, pineapple). Truth be told, the vegetarian was better than the pork. Which is strange, because any human being would think otherwise, pork vs veggies, that's a no brainer. But the pineapple on the El Pastor should've been a bigger slice to accompany the pork, seeing as that's all that's in the taco (besides the large salt crystals), and they do compliment each other so well. It shouldn't be a tiny taco that you are biting through to get to the good stuff, i.e. the bite-full of pineapple & pork combo. Maybe I'm being too hard on it. It's just a taco. The vegetarian though, had a boatload of flavor I was not expecting. No complaints there. The foldie (which is a quesadilla) is served on a slightly bigger plate, but you'll still need something else to fill you up. The tuna, was just like a tuna melt, really cheesy. I rarely order tostadas, on account of my fear of how messy it'll be to eat in public and the real life struggle of having it fall apart on me. Everything you order will come out one by one, and that can sometimes make it seem like service is slow. Especially as we sat there waiting for one persons order that was just lost in the halogen lights somewhere. Negative: service is slow, they are way busy, it's loud, servings are small- which can add up $ Good for: snacks & drinks at a pretty done out venue

We have eaten at Guzman y Gomez in at least six cities and they are all very good. Am sad that we were so hungry that we forgot to take a picture. But it was a simple meal of three Hard Shell Minced Spicy Beef tacos. There were very good. Not the best in the world but better than Taco Bell. The place was packed. And it took longer than average. Think they forgot to call our number. Had to go ask if our food ready. It was! Will definitely return on our next trip to Australia. Recommend for a quick inexpensive lunch.

There are a lot of gluten-free choices and I went for the Mex Bim-Bap (baby spinach, quinoa, shaved cabbage, shredded raw zucchini, guacamole, charred sweet corn, pickled cabbage, pico de gallo, black beans, crispy paprika chickpeas, tortilla strips, lemon vinaigrette) and Chargrilled Corn for a starter (back in the states we call it 'street corn'). Both were really tasty and while you can add chicken, fish, beef, pork or falafel to the Bim-Bap, it was enough for me as is. They have alcoholic drinks (I had a bourbon, neat) and the atmosphere is fun and lively. You place your order at the counter after you've been seated and they bring the food and drinks over to you.

This particular outlet is massive, with mountains of seating to look after the lunch time crowds. Get here bang on noon if you want a table right away, otherwise you risk having to line up and wait a little while (though the speed of everything probably means you won't wait long). You can also pre-book for groups of 12 which is great if you want to come during the lunchtime rush with a big group of colleagues. Weekends are a bit dead. I went for a Sunday dinner and our group of 10 had no problem getting seating at 6pm. The selection of drinks is small but the house-made Agua Frescas and the cocktails using local spirits are fun and inventive. The Horchata is delicious and worth a try if you've not had it before. If you're a mad Mexican fan then the food at Fonda will let you down. There's not a lot of punchy flavours and some dishes fall short (the beef taco wasn't that great - the topping bitter) while others are surprisingly tasty though far from authentic (fish taco I'm looking at you). The chicken quesadilla is just plain boring if you ask me, but it great for kids or plain eaters. My advice? Choose wisely and go with the approach of sharing a number of dishes for a bigger variety of flavours.
