I put my Yelp app to good use last night when my friend and I were in the mood for some casual, tasty and cheap dinner, for our Saturday evening.... let's be honest, who ISN'T ever in the mood for Mexican?? I had heard good things said about Fonda prior to firing up the app and I read a previous review (on here) that after 6.30 it tends to get a little busy and there may be a wait for seating.... Just like that, 6.30pm on the dot and we were seated straight away. Scout the menu (drinks section first, of course!) and they have my favourite brew! - Two Birds - things have gotten off to a great start! Ordering takes place at the counter - don't sit there for 10 minutes trying to get the waitstaff's attention, like we did! *face palm*. We ordered the chicken enchiladas and beef burrito - that's enough for two to feel satisfied (and enough room for gelato on the way home). The beef burrito came out first... and I think almost fell in love! I've had my fair share of Mexican - Radio Mexico, Cantina, Bluecorn, Mamacitas, Newmarket Hotel and an endless choice when I was at college in LA! Safe to say, I love a good burrito. I sat there trying to distinguish the subtle crunch in the burritos - genius - they've got tiny tiny ?grated? corn chips in them! It was moderately spicy and may be a little too much if you're sensitive to spice, but for those who like to eat food that makes their eyes and nose run (it's totally sexy!) there's their "Jane Fonda" and "F&#! You" hot sauce. It's quick turnover of customers in here - simple menu, pay at the counter, the many chefs are on a mini production line, service with a smile and food comes out very quick. It's not your fast food, like Mad Mex... it's semi-healthy and HEAVEN, served quickly! Muchas gratsias, Fonda. hasta luego!!

Dined here on a Thursday night, the place was full and was vibing with people sprawled out onto the footpath. We put our names down and were told it would be about 25 minutes to be text for out table. At the 30 minute mark we went to remind them & were promptly seated as soon as a table left. Food & frozen margaritas were prompt. I had the Pork taco & it was nice. Not bursting with flavour but I liked it. I also had the asparagus quesedillas which also were nice. The margaritas were delicious and served in a cute jar. All in all the Fonda experience was okay & didn't wow me but I liked it. I may go back but I have many other eateries to conquest in the Swan street area first.

Loving our Melbourne Staycation. Tonight doin' it Mexican style in Tigerland #fondamexican #olsenhotel

Pretty sure the burritos have shrunk in 2013. Shame. Usually I cannot move after one of these, now I'm off to get hot chips. :(

Juanita's does a taco night on the first Friday of every month. We decided to check it out tonight…read more... and we weren't disappointed! The shop itself is very unassuming - a diamond in the rough. Juanita (or who I assume is Juanita? Should have asked! ... ) was very friendly. She made us feel very welcome and ensured we had everything we needed. We tried the taco mix, pork and chicken tacos. The tortillas were rustic. They come with an array of sides (& plenty of them!) including a pineapple/cucumber salsa, a cabbage slaw, some diced onions, coriander, tomatillo with avocado and chipotle sauce. There was also a couple of Juanita's home made sauces on the table to use. We enjoyed it all! Although quite full we couldn't resist trying the salted caramel Cheezecake. It was really delicious, thick and rich but well balanced with the addition of yoghurt, honey, bitter chocolate and praline served with it. This is a vegan option FYI! BTW - Juanita's sells delicious sauces and spices to take away ... we just had to grab one. We'll definitely head back.

The chicken mole was the best I've had in Oz, as were the corn tortillas - the latter had real flavor and must have been prepared by someone who has eaten real ones for many years in Mexico. Don't be put off by the street scene outside. The place itself was cozy and service friendly.

A lovely smile, thoughtful gestures such as bring us extra napkins when she saw that we'd used the already provided ones, knew the menu extensively and was able to read our table and make suggestions. It's a new kid on the block and boy does it get busy. Easy single table was packed, not to mention the people who put their name down to wait to get in. All of the people make the venue a little harder to hear, the kind of raise your voice to speak type deal. I like the floor to ceiling tile, be wary, it'll just take a second for your eyes to adjust to how white and sparkling clean everything looks. Drinks all come salt rimmed, even the can o' beer. The Diablo was good, nice with a black salt rim, it had tons of flavor going on, especially for something pre-made and coming from a tap. It was bold, smokey, meaty, and delicious. The guacamole, I haven't gotten used to yet, I'm used to it being...different, with more chunk and less sour cream smoothness. As for the tacos, I had the vegetarian (cauliflower, broccoli, chipotle) and the El Pastor (pork, guajillo, pineapple). Truth be told, the vegetarian was better than the pork. Which is strange, because any human being would think otherwise, pork vs veggies, that's a no brainer. But the pineapple on the El Pastor should've been a bigger slice to accompany the pork, seeing as that's all that's in the taco (besides the large salt crystals), and they do compliment each other so well. It shouldn't be a tiny taco that you are biting through to get to the good stuff, i.e. the bite-full of pineapple & pork combo. Maybe I'm being too hard on it. It's just a taco. The vegetarian though, had a boatload of flavor I was not expecting. No complaints there. The foldie (which is a quesadilla) is served on a slightly bigger plate, but you'll still need something else to fill you up. The tuna, was just like a tuna melt, really cheesy. I rarely order tostadas, on account of my fear of how messy it'll be to eat in public and the real life struggle of having it fall apart on me. Everything you order will come out one by one, and that can sometimes make it seem like service is slow. Especially as we sat there waiting for one persons order that was just lost in the halogen lights somewhere. Negative: service is slow, they are way busy, it's loud, servings are small- which can add up $ Good for: snacks & drinks at a pretty done out venue

The brand has built a loyal following across Australia and beyond, but experiences can vary depending on location and timing. When the kitchen's on point, it delivers big on taste and freshness. Just be mindful that your experience may depend on the specific store and time of day. We have eaten at Guzman y Gomez in at least six cities and they are all very good. Am sad that we were so hungry that we forgot to take a picture. But it was a simple meal of three Hard Shell Minced Spicy Beef tacos. There were very good. Not the best in the world but better than Taco Bell. The place was packed. And it took longer than average. Think they forgot to call our number. Had to go ask if our food ready. It was! Will definitely return on our next trip to Australia. Recommend for a quick inexpensive lunch.

There are a lot of gluten-free choices and I went for the Mex Bim-Bap (baby spinach, quinoa, shaved cabbage, shredded raw zucchini, guacamole, charred sweet corn, pickled cabbage, pico de gallo, black beans, crispy paprika chickpeas, tortilla strips, lemon vinaigrette) and Chargrilled Corn for a starter (back in the states we call it 'street corn'). Both were really tasty and while you can add chicken, fish, beef, pork or falafel to the Bim-Bap, it was enough for me as is. They have alcoholic drinks (I had a bourbon, neat) and the atmosphere is fun and lively. You place your order at the counter after you've been seated and they bring the food and drinks over to you.

This particular outlet is massive, with mountains of seating to look after the lunch time crowds. Get here bang on noon if you want a table right away, otherwise you risk having to line up and wait a little while (though the speed of everything probably means you won't wait long). You can also pre-book for groups of 12 which is great if you want to come during the lunchtime rush with a big group of colleagues. Weekends are a bit dead. I went for a Sunday dinner and our group of 10 had no problem getting seating at 6pm. The selection of drinks is small but the house-made Agua Frescas and the cocktails using local spirits are fun and inventive. The Horchata is delicious and worth a try if you've not had it before. If you're a mad Mexican fan then the food at Fonda will let you down. There's not a lot of punchy flavours and some dishes fall short (the beef taco wasn't that great - the topping bitter) while others are surprisingly tasty though far from authentic (fish taco I'm looking at you). The chicken quesadilla is just plain boring if you ask me, but it great for kids or plain eaters. My advice? Choose wisely and go with the approach of sharing a number of dishes for a bigger variety of flavours.
