Pj's is located off to the left of Maroondah Highway before you hit Eastlink and there is some parking out the front of the restaurant. With both indoor and outdoor seating available, Pj's was packed Saturday night but we managed to snag a table at the back. The servers seemed a little flustered as there were quite a few larger parties ordering and we were repeatedly asked if we would like to order when we already had but hey I'd rather be asked than left there hungry. A complimentary teeny tiny bowl of corn chips kicked off our night and we ordered a strawberry milkshake and a glass of sangria to quench our thirst during the wait for food. Fish taco- squeeze the lemon onto the crispy fish and we have a winner. Beef taco-best taco out of the 3 as it was juicy and the beef was very tender. Chicken taco- a bit dry but I drenched it with chilli sauce yum! Combination special enchilada -Spinach and potato mixed Ice cream nacho - dusted with cinnamon sugar, the vanilla ice-cream was drizzled with honey and matched with a side of tia maria. This wasn't quite what I expected, it was more bland as I imagined that the "nachos" would be more like cinnamon toast crunch pieces. We did finish the whole thing but it got a bit too sweet towards the end. I'm glad we made an emergency food stop and stopped here as I enjoyed it. I like how you can choose a soft tortilla or hard taco shell and although not exactly like the street tacos in Mexico, this was much better than some of the taco's i've had in Australia that are drenched in sour cream and overdone.

But after visiting Amor Mexico on a particularly lonely night, I am very happy to report that the warm and welcoming staff (not to mention the yummy food and cosy atmosphere) prompted a return visit a week later. And although the staff were different, the way they made me feel genuinely welcome and better still, appreciated for my choice to dine with them, was exactly the same as the first time. The restaurant was quite busy the first night and apart from the volume of the two large tables celebrating birthdays (they weren't that loud - I'm just a grumpy old man!) the service was equally as wonderful as that of the second occasion when there were only 4 or 5 tables of two dining. I ordered different drinks and meals each time and everything was delicious and reasonably generous in size adding good value for money to the list of positives of this place. If you or you and your friends/family are ever in Forest Hill - or within 20kms of Forest Hill - and feel like some yummy Mexican and great hospitality, drop in to Amor Mexico. PS. I talked with the owner on my second visit and was informed it has been a Mexican restaurant for 30 years and hasn't changed hands on the last 15 - which I guess is testimony to my very positive review.

Nothing went wrong. It was a beuitiful place for pre Drinks before a night out. It was even good enough that I would consider it for a birthday. I loved dipping my quesadillas into the sour cream and my margarita felt full on and helped me relax. 5 stars for Pacos Tacos and they deserved it, thank you for starting my night out so well. I'll be coming back sometime.

Although coriander is a key component in many Mexican dishes, my main meal tasted of nothing more. I ordered a Concane taco to begin, and it's size was okay for the price however it tasted very bland; the meat seemed to lack any good seasoning. For my mains, I ordered the 'Pacos Nachos' - and wasn't impressed. It tasted of nothing more than coriander and the Fetta Cheese, although creamy, was tasteless. There is no doubt that all the ingredients were very fresh, but this doesn't overwrite the fact that the flavours just weren't there. The meals were incredibly quick to come out of the kitchen but this is not a suprise considering that most of the dishes didn't require on the spot cooking but rather a simple 'stack and go' line in the kitchen. Which is useful If you are on the run and need a quick bite. As for the atmosphere, I felt like I was sitting in a children's playground. The colours just did not work for me, and although bright colours open up the space, the use of yellow and pink just made the restaurant feel childish. Overall, I think that, with some focus on getting flavour ratios right, the meals here could be very enjoyable. I can live with the decor.

The shop itself is very unassuming - a diamond in the rough. Juanita (or who I assume is Juanita? Should have asked! ... ) was very friendly. She made us feel very welcome and ensured we had everything we needed. We tried the taco mix, pork and chicken tacos. The tortillas were rustic. They come with an array of sides (& plenty of them!) including a pineapple/cucumber salsa, a cabbage slaw, some diced onions, coriander, tomatillo with avocado and chipotle sauce. There was also a couple of Juanita's home made sauces on the table to use. We enjoyed it all! Although quite full we couldn't resist trying the salted caramel Cheezecake. It was really delicious, thick and rich but well balanced with the addition of yoghurt, honey, bitter chocolate and praline served with it. This is a vegan option FYI! BTW - Juanita's sells delicious sauces and spices to take away ... we just had to grab one. We'll definitely head back.

The chicken mole was the best I've had in Oz, as were the corn tortillas - the latter had real flavor and must have been prepared by someone who has eaten real ones for many years in Mexico. I popped in for dinner on a Monday, and took advantage of the Monday to Wednesday Half Price Entrees and Mains deal. This was great as when I got what I ordered, it was enough for two, and only cost about $10. My meal was fantastic. After a shared entrée of the Carlos Potachos, which was basically nachos with potato wedges instead of corn chips, I ordered the Fajita Vegetales, and was given a piping hot pan of fresh vegetables cooked in a ranch sauce. Another plate held lettuce, guacamole and rice, and yet another had 4 fajita wraps, plus cheese sour cream and salsa. I proceeded to make my own wraps, and somehow managed to devour the entire thing. Like a Taco Bill, the prices are quite high for what you get. Although the meals are really large, I'm always surprised at how much it costs for a burrito at ANY Mexican restaurant. With the fare quite simple in its preparation and ingredients, I'm one who often make sit at home and avoids paying $20 for a meal that cost under $5 to cook. That said, take advantage of the half price nights, and you're sure to enjoy having someone else cook for you.
