The food was ok, some of the tacos were better than others, but all had decent levels of spice. Tried their margarita, which wasn't great. They have a big outdoor area so probably a good place for a drink on a warm night. I would recommend avoiding the hour before sunset, as this west facing property gets full sun glare and there are no shades on the windows.

Atrocious customer "service" to rival any Kitchen Nightmares contender…read more Clearly an understaffed, over-customered night, the staff and manager Adam will try to repeated blame others instead of accepting responsibility for their mishaps. 1. In the case of the "we don't have forks", it was blamed on the fact that half the rostered staff had not turned up (and if you are thinking of working here, I can see why you would not turn up) 2. In the case of the "missing empanadas", after questioning whether we had ordered them (read: "blame the customer"), the blame was assigned to the kitchen staff who accidentally threw away the ticket. 3. For the case of the "missing taco", it was purely blamed on the customer for not having ordered it, after quizzing whether it was him who took the order or someone else? 4. For the winning case of "we will give you a discount", but not apply it - This is the winner for the number of blames from manager Adam, including being understaffed, being interrupted, not promising the discount, then proceeding to mansplain after asking just for the bill, then being told that he can talk to me how he wants, and say whatever he wants, and slams the door after the customer. Finally, if you like a responsible manager sending their teenage staff to apologise to the customers, then tell the customers but "you started it". Come here, cannot fault it!

Okay, it isn't strictly a restaurant since while you can get food here, it tends to only be finger food (though you can get a couple of filling things here). The one problem with the place was that it happened to be pretty crowded when I decided to visit it again for old times sake, and while there is food available, in the end it is more like a tapas bar.

After a few failed attempts to get there (doing drive bys only to realise it was closed) I finally got to try Los Hermanos. Now I'm going to go out on a bit of a limb here, but I dare say it does have some of the best tacos in Melbourne. I ordered the mushroom tacos and fish tacos with chipotle sauce and I think it's become my new favourite taco. The flavours were unique, delicious and the sauce just completed a great dish. The staff are all super friendly and happy to recommend dishes for you. We took their advice and went with the cactus salad. Something I've not seen in Melbourne before. A great side dish to go with the tacos. They have a cute little courtyard outside, but I personally prefer inside to enjoy the atmosphere of this awesome taqueria.

It's nestled in Northcote, next to the best pizza you'll ever have and a stone's throw away from some mysterious cocktails. It's small inside, not super tiny like Lil Hop (in Fitzroy) but small enough that tables do get filled up pretty quick. It's a casual, minimal effort that you'd get from your standard taco shop. And I love that. They aren't trying to hard to impress you in décor. They've got a cool collection of tequila, the bottles are really fun to have a look at. And a table topped up with all of the hot sauce you can handle. To their food. My oh my, I'm impressed. The fish taco has fat chunks of fish steak marinated and grilled. It complimemnts the slaw and coriander sauce. Yum. The chicken comes with beans- choose the refired ones. Everything melts together is synchronicity. Come on Taco Tuesdays. Pints are $3, and select tacos are individually $3. It's a dinner night that anyone can afford!

For nights when I don't want to cook myself, this is where I would go to get my Mexi on - and ability for margaritas and beer with salsa and chips.. made my move to Melbourne a little more bearable. The guys had the enchiladas which were great because they were of appropriate size - as in plato style with rice and beans. Dudes were happy. Friend enjoyed her quesadilla plato & I had the fish tacos which were ok. A bit overcooked, could have been chicken, not the light & fluffy kind that you envision. Place is small, don't expect to have a table free and don't expect to have a dinner party with a group. If this was in walking distance I might go there 1 x week. very good value for $$ compared with the rest of Australian Mexican menus...finally!

This is truly a unique experience and I can not help myself but give it a 5 Star review. 3.4 Super casual…read moreMexican cafe. The food is generally very good as you'd expect from ex Radio Mexico people. Service is pleasant but uneven and the place alternately delights and frustrates. First off it must be appreciated that this is an informal and slightly rough and ready operation. We arrived to something much more casual than I'd anticipated for a birthday celebration. That was my inadequate research. The place was decked out for Halloween and various patrons were in full garb. A party was scheduled for later on, I think. The cafe was only a third full the whole time we were there. The music was pumping and was mainly very good stuff (well done on the Stooges number). There's no table service here and you order at the counter. Our pre dinner drinks came out slowly although to be fair they were mainly different Marguerita's. My classic Marguerita was good. Even though we'd pre booked our table of six there wasn't enough cutlery provided on the table which is indicative of the slightly ramshackle nature of the place. We ordered nachos first with beef and guacamole. These were very slow to come out and were a little cool when they arrived. They were delicious though and were very quickly devoured. The remaining dishes - quesadillas, burritos and tacos - came out in a piecemeal way. Some were hot, some were cool. My beef chilli quesadilla was hot and really good. The cauliflower wedges were hot and really good too. The batter was lovely and crisp. The steak quesadilla was ok only to me with nice flavour. The steak was a little chewy I thought but but my partner disagreed and really liked it. The small burritos were fantastic. Reasonably priced but actually quite sizeable. The youngies around the table who'd ordered them were all nodding and happy saying, "...this food is so good". We finished with tacos. The fish and beef ones were good too although inconsistent temperatures were evident again. My impression was they were a bit bland unless you add some chilli or jalapeño to lift them. Service from various servers was nice and cheery throughout. It you want a laid back, cheap and cheerful Mexican experience then this is your place. The cafe itself is quirky but the food is good. Eating in is an experience. There was a lot of Uber Eats orders flying out the door.

I've always had a love affair with Mexico, their culture, their history, their architecture, but…read moremostly their food. There is so much more to Mexican food than tacos and salsa, but unfortunately most Mexican restaurants focus on these two staples. Now don't get me wrong, I love a good taco just like the next guy, but rarely do I find a taco that wows, and rarely do I find a Mexican restaurant in Melbourne that wows me as well. I rate Mexican restaurants by BAD - GOOD - GREAT. Most fall in the range bad, with a few good and I've only rated two as great. PJ's Mexican Kitchen falls into the GOOD category. The fit out is pretty good, and is what you would expect from a Mexican Restaurant, rustic and colourful. The menu is not bad, but is what you would expect. We ordered for entree the trio platter, A selection of homemade dips: Chili con carne, guacamole and frijoles con queso served with corn chips. The Chili con carne was pretty good, and full of flavour. The frijoles con queso was ok but nothing special. The guacamole was a disappointment. It virtually had no flavour, it was basically just smashed avocado. Next we ordered the Mexican charred corn, served with chipotle aioli and lime. This should have been a great dish, but I think the kitchen forgot to add the chipotle aioli and lime. It literally was just grilled corn and was rather dry. For our main I ordered the Beef Colorado, Tender pieces of slow cooked beef with ground spices and onion, served with frijoles, Mexican rice and two flour tortillas. This was a good solid dish. Full of flavour and is what I would expect from a Mexican restaurant. Look, overall it was a good experience with a couple of misses. The service, whilst friendly and quick, just needed a bit of polishing. If in the area again I'd certainly return, and was certainly value for money.

I have to say that I am reall glad I did. The staff were super friendly, and the ensalada (which is what I believe it was called, though I could be wrong) was pretty coo. Basically it was strips of marinated beef on a green salad. I'd definitely come back here if I'm in the area.

I went the very next day to check out La Tortilleria and I was very pleasantly surprised! I reviewed the entire menu in greater detail than I probably should have and decided on the Chilaquiles. Melbourne is a long way from Mexico, but I read some yelp reviews and saw photos that looked authentic! I had read some reviews that these "nachos" were very soggy, but to my surprise they were just as they should be and we're very authentic to South Texas! To describe these as "nachos" is not accurate! They are dipped in a red sauce for flavor and served perfectly. I had the Chilaquiles with chicken and they were really excellent and I highly them. There was not even a tiny use morsel of these left on the plate! In fact, I was so very impressed with the authentic flavor & taste, I bought 7 tacos, guacamole and chips, pico de gallo and chips to take to some friends. Everything was pretty authentic to my well-trained Tex Mex palate and I certainly will be back! I even bought two packs of corn tortillas to try to make some Mexican dishes while staying at my friends in Melbourne! Friends loved the "take out" tacos & chips, guacamole & pico!
