Gallery spaces can…read moreoften feel intimidating or pretentious however this light space is inviting and displays interesting contemporary art that I often envisage in my home. The gallery is a not for profit organisation that is committed to nurturing and displaying the work of artists that may not be able to have their work shown in commercial galleries. One of the staff informed me that the majority of artists have intellectual disabilities and that was the instigation for creating this gallery. Philosophy aside their other point of difference is their pricing. The works are affordably priced for pieces of such a high calibre. A framed print/painting/illustration can range from $75 to $800, however most are around the $200 mark. This is one of those inner city cultural happenings that leave me warm and fuzzy and thankful that people are striving to make a difference.

The thing that impresses me most about The Artists Garden is the impressive knowledge the staff have of each and every plant in their space. Whether it's a little cactus or a giant fiddle leaf fig, they'll show you how to care for it. Yes, it is a bit more expensive than your average nursery, but these plants are practically designer - they are the cream of the crop when it comes to greenery. I weeded it and put down some mulch and looked far and wide for a garden nursery and my closest local one was here, Artists Garden. The shop consist of all the needs to get some great items either plant based or decorative into your backyard. The items found there are mainly from local designers so you know your buying something that is one-of-a-kind. The staff are pleasant and happy to chat with you about what you would like to do with your graden. Theres the beautiful two story victorian shop as well as a small garden patch to the left that you can enter and explore. Coming here is a highlight for me, it's so peaceful and serene.

My friends and I were lucky enough to attend 'HELM2', and Portrait exhibition from Benjamin F Guy. It was a real eye-opening exhibition, we loved the spacious area of the gallery and afterwards enjoyed a drink and meal in one of the many great pubs in the area.

This is basically a kind of grungy empty shop space available for rent for short-term art exhibitions. There is a partition wall somewhat dividing the space and not much else to it. There are so many parts of Australian Galleries; I've been in all of them at various times. The stockroom, paper, main gallery are scattered along a block in Darby St. and around into Smith St. The galleries are elegantly renovated houses and warehouse space and also contain a range of different sized spaces with various exhibitions of contemporary Australian art. It is all very saleable - I just wish that I could afford it as the gallery represents some of the best contemporary Australian artists. Australian Galleries are Melbourne's longest established commercial gallery. Unlike other commercial galleries at Australian Galleries, the casual visitor, like myself, can see the work in their stockroom, it is yet another building on the other side of Darby St. In this elegantly renovated building you can see a selection of stock from the artists that they represent. There were a couple of Peter Churcher paintings in the stock room that really impressed me.

The art I have seen here is usually pretty good and I like their selections. The works are predominantly contemporary Australian artists and this specific gallery displays 'Works on Paper' as the business names subtitle suggests. Australian Galleries is to put bluntly an art gallery chain, a business in the art world so this particular gallery can feel a little cold and serious but the interesting art usually makes up for the staffs utilitarian approach to their clientele. If you're cruising around the area soaking up some culture definitely poke your head in but be prepared for the more "mature" space of the areas galleries.
