Walking around the Collingwood gallery district I had to stop and look at what was in part of Australian Galleries. There are so many parts of Australian Galleries; I've been in all of them at various times. The stockroom, paper, main gallery are scattered along a block in Darby St. and around into Smith St. The galleries are elegantly renovated houses and warehouse space and also contain a range of different sized spaces with various exhibitions of contemporary Australian art.
It is all very saleable - I just wish that I could afford it as the gallery represents some of the best contemporary Australian artists. Australian Galleries are Melbourne's longest established commercial gallery.
Unlike other commercial galleries at Australian Galleries, the casual visitor, like myself, can see the work in their stockroom, it is yet another building on the other side of Darby St. In this elegantly renovated building you can see a selection of stock from the artists that they represent. There were a couple of Peter Churcher paintings in the stock room that really impressed me. read more
