Prices range from a couples of dollars for small pieces of imported plastic jewellery through to over a hundred for the right pair of cowboy boots. Plenty of modern interesting items too, such a satchel bags and pre-loved Chucks. Staff are friendly enough, but leave you to make your own discoveries. You'll need to have an idea what you are looking for, or you will be overwhelmed by the volume of items. The general price for vintage clothes and bags isn't cheap, but Retrostar pay rent for a city store, and have done the work finding individual pieces - this isn't SAVERS! Lay-by is available for a non-refundable 25% deposit. Make sure you inspect your item carefully, as their return policy is for a 3 month store credit only. Keep an eye out for their "garage sales" that pop up in Brunswick sometimes - everything is $10 but it sells FAST!

Even with floor to ceiling racks and barely any walking space between yet more stuff, often their offerings spill out into the hallway outside the store. I pride myself on my ability to stay focused and hunt through rack after rack of junk to find that one gem, but even then... Retrostar takes it a bit far (oh hey, that rhymed!). My advice: unless you know what you want (a coat, a check shirt, etc) steer clear of Retrostar. If you have a clear idea as to what you're looking for though, chances are you'll find it here.

The worst bit was the smell of wet, rotting carpet while we waited for the insurer to pay up so we could go and fix it. We went to Carpet Call at Nunawading. I was really impressed with the range of carpets and other floor coverings that they had there, and if they didn't have what we wanted, they could order it in. The staff were really friendly, and after shopping around at a few other places, we decided to go with the really quite good quote provided by Carpet Call. The guys who laid the carpet were really professional and friendly too. They even helped me move a few of the larger items that would have been a struggle on my own. I really recommend this place.

The tavern is located within the Seaworks precinct, where the Sea Sepherd ships are docked, and it can be a little daunting to find your way the first time. Basically, you take a left on Ann St from Nelson Pl and head toward the water. There's some parking along Ann St. Check out the creepy historic bluestone morgue and head through the adjacent gates into the industrial-looking port area. Follow the sign to the Pirates Tavern, take a left, and you'll see it. Inside, it's warm and cozy in a rough-and-tumble kind of way. The bar's to your left and the stage is straight ahead. They have live music on Friday and Saturday nights, and once a month on Sundays too. Usually music that appeals to an older crowd. The crowd here mostly IS on the older side, but children and families are welcome too. Zero dress code here -- if you're dressed elegantly, this is the wrong place for you. Drinks are reasonably priced and they have a wide range on offer. Service is genuinely friendly. Note that Pirates Tavern is only open on the weekends -- Friday night through Sunday night. If you come on a Sunday afternoon, you can also tour the Sea Shepherd ship docked outside for free. Win!

The Opening Celebration Concert at Federation Square was a lovely free event showcasing some of the artists and bands from around the world who would be playing some shows the week ahead.
