Call me old fashioned but I just cannot succumb to the download everything mantra. Video Busters in Prahran is my all time favourite store mainly because it always has good deals throughout the week. In this day and age, $1 doesn't get you much. At Video Busters however, the $1 movie deal on tight-arse Tuesdays will get you any movie (including new releases) for just 1 buck! Other great deals include five 7-day DVDs (You can have a Gossip Girl extended marathon) for just $5. Besides that, I love that they sell their old DVDs off for a fraction of the cost compared to some other chain stores. My verdict is, rent it, love it, buy it. And Video Busters gives me that choice, all in one store.

Video Busters is your one stop shop. The Prahran location always had deals going and they are always so convenient. The store is a decent size and is always fully stocked with a wide range to choose from. Be sure to avoid the giant family size block of Cadbury's chocolate strategically placed between the latest release DVD's, gets me every time. They also have a set of computers at the back of the store and for a small fee you can browse the web or use Wi-Fi.

How I know this is because I have a test. I am a huge film lover and there was a film I watched when I was younger called "Don's Plum" and have never found a copy since due to the fact it had a very limited release as it was boycotted by actors Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire as the whole film is in black and white and is overexposed. I actually really liked it and no DVD store has ever had it, let alone heard of it. Until now. Not only did they have it in, the "film buff" behind the desk told me the history of the film and gave me recommendations on other films I probably hadn't seen. This is the nature of the store and is understandable due to the fact there are sections dedicated to "100 films you have to see before you die" (made by the staff) and "Highly recommended" (again by the staff) but due to their undoubtedly good knowledge it makes selecting films easy. If that's not your thing there are also sections categorized by Director's name, Academy Award winners, Stoner flicks, Chick flicks, Arthouse, Foreign, Nostalgic, Cult and more! It's a film lover's paradise. It's almost too good at times as they have films that aren't registered to Australia's region and will only work on some DVD players. Again, this just shows they are committed and the one time they didn't have a film I wanted, they were happy to order it in and probably took it quite personal.

Video Busters in Collingwood is by no means my local video store with a Blockbuster and Video Dogs…read morecloser to home. Yet it is my first choice video shop by a long way for a number of reasons. Firstly, it is the cheapest video store there is. On Tuesdays you can get any new release for only $1. There are also other specials meaning you can get hire 10 weekly DVDs for $6. Secondly, the selection of DVDs is far greater than Blockbuster or Video Dogs. You can get new releases, art-house movies, TV series, documentaries and much more obscure movies than these other stores. Thirdly, I like the way they sort their movies. Their collection is primarily sorted by director and it makes it easy to know exactly what you like. Fourthly, unlike Video Dogs they are open until late. 10pm each day. Finally, they have a cheesy jingle in store that is extremely endearing. In short, if you have a choice of video stores, go to Video Busters. It will be worth the extra ride or walk.

You can also buy DVD's and VHS' here, but I recommend you stick with hiring as only REAL crap is available to buy (sorry, I don't mean to offend anyone who is a fan of straight-to-video releases starring one of the lesser known Baldwin's.) Check it out if you live near by, but definitely keep in mind that Video Busters is a place to find the films of your childhood, not that thriller starring Matt Damon.

Magnum Movies will have something to appeal to your tastes. Magnum Movies does more then rent DVDs. They sell mobile phone credit and have a small Internet cafe, supply ink cartridge refill and disc cleaning and repair as well as selling all the movie related snacks and treats. There is also a retro arcade games area and game rentals. They always have a range Ex-rental and new DVDs for sale, the range available is better during a promotional sale. The combo packs make Magnum a budget choice. Sunday to Thursday get 2 new releases and three weeklies for $11 or 3 new releases for $12. Everyday deals include 1 new release and 5 weeklies $11 or 2 new releases and 5 weeklies $14. I still prefer the ease and cost of getting my new release rentals from an Oovie machine, but for weekly titles and the ease of location, Magnum Movies does a great job.

When VHS was the way we watched videos, this place was huge, and you could easily spend an hour looking through the collection. After the DVD revolution, and subsequent shrinking of packaging, these guys moved across the road to smaller premises. Although they still stock tonnes of titles, now its just a little harder to search the range, what with DVD's being so skinny and most of them on the shelves with their spine facing out. Can be a bit tough on the neck. With great deals on offer where you can pick up multiple titles and save, Video Busters is great for those who haven't switched to downloading their movies online, and offers the physical experience that will soon be a thing of the past.
