Now don't get me wrong, I love a good taco just like the next guy, but rarely do I find a taco that wows, and rarely do I find a Mexican restaurant in Melbourne that wows me as well. I rate Mexican restaurants by BAD - GOOD - GREAT. Most fall in the range bad, with a few good and I've only rated two as great. PJ's Mexican Kitchen falls into the GOOD category. The fit out is pretty good, and is what you would expect from a Mexican Restaurant, rustic and colourful. The menu is not bad, but is what you would expect. We ordered for entree the trio platter, A selection of homemade dips: Chili con carne, guacamole and frijoles con queso served with corn chips. The Chili con carne was pretty good, and full of flavour. The frijoles con queso was ok but nothing special. The guacamole was a disappointment. It virtually had no flavour, it was basically just smashed avocado. Next we ordered the Mexican charred corn, served with chipotle aioli and lime. This should have been a great dish, but I think the kitchen forgot to add the chipotle aioli and lime. It literally was just grilled corn and was rather dry. For our main I ordered the Beef Colorado, Tender pieces of slow cooked beef with ground spices and onion, served with frijoles, Mexican rice and two flour tortillas. This was a good solid dish. Full of flavour and is what I would expect from a Mexican restaurant. Look, overall it was a good experience with a couple of misses. The service, whilst friendly and quick, just needed a bit of polishing. If in the area again I'd certainly return, and was certainly value for money.

I have to say that I am reall glad I did. The staff were super friendly, and the ensalada (which is what I believe it was called, though I could be wrong) was pretty coo. The atmosphere is mostly couples and young groups, but we did have a 4 year old in our dining party on last visit and they took good care of her. The staff were really accommodating and also offered a plain chicken-and-cheese quesadilla to avoid any tears over spicy food. I wouldn't suggest coming here with a whole hoard of children, but for the most part it's both adult and family friendly. All orders are taken at the counter, be it take away or dine-in. Getting a seat can be a little tricky in peak times as it's a walk-in restaurant unless you're booking for a large group. But the style of ordering makes it fairly fast turn over. They'd probably make a lot more money on booze if they did table service, but I guess it moves people through faster too. If it's on the drinks menu, I am ordering it. And the Los Hermanos margarita was honestly one of the best I have ever tried. My favourite in Melbourne has long been Mamasita but I think it has finally been toppled by Los Hermanos. The fish taco was a particular standout but we also tried the gorditas, which I'd never had before but will definitely be ordering again. The menu is on the blackboard, which can be a little hard to see if you're sitting in the window. I recommend getting the menu ready on your phone so you can order straight off that. There was also an hour-long wait on the Friday night we went, however the Victoria Hotel is right across the street and a great place to grab a beer while you wait for your table (they'll call you when it's ready.)
