Juanita's does a taco night on the first Friday of every month. We decided to check it out tonight…read more... and we weren't disappointed! The shop itself is very unassuming - a diamond in the rough. Juanita (or who I assume is Juanita? Should have asked! ... ) was very friendly. She made us feel very welcome and ensured we had everything we needed. We tried the taco mix, pork and chicken tacos. The tortillas were rustic. They come with an array of sides (& plenty of them!) including a pineapple/cucumber salsa, a cabbage slaw, some diced onions, coriander, tomatillo with avocado and chipotle sauce. There was also a couple of Juanita's home made sauces on the table to use. We enjoyed it all! Although quite full we couldn't resist trying the salted caramel Cheezecake. It was really delicious, thick and rich but well balanced with the addition of yoghurt, honey, bitter chocolate and praline served with it. This is a vegan option FYI! BTW - Juanita's sells delicious sauces and spices to take away ... we just had to grab one. We'll definitely head back.

The chicken mole was the best I've had in Oz, as were the corn tortillas - the latter had real flavor and must have been prepared by someone who has eaten real ones for many years in Mexico. Don't be put off by the street scene outside. The place itself was cozy and service friendly.

First of all, I can't believe that the food and service is so great after reading that this place…read morehas been open for over 40 years?! They still make the effort as if they have newly opened! The food was delicious, the service was great, and it's so family friendly! My little one (1.5yo) had her own menu and colouring pencils, she enjoyed her (healthy!) Kid's Fajitas meal and even when she got restless and was strolling around and dancing to the music (played at a suitable volume to create an atmosphere but still be able to have easy conversations), the team interacted with her in such a lovely manner. I'm glad we stopped here for dinner on our way into Bendigo from Melbourne. We were quite impressed with everything... you have a great team there! Tip: the drinks selection is pretty good - but they also offer BYO beer & wine Mon-Thurs. And the taco platter is yummy - you can mix it up and choose 3 different fillings (the slow cooked lamb was surprisingly my favourite!).

Mmmm Gringo Vibes makes me wish everyday was a Taco Tuesday day. We stumbled upon Gringo Vibes…read moreaccidently, and how could you not? It's nestled in Northcote, next to the best pizza you'll ever have and a stone's throw away from some mysterious cocktails. It's small inside, not super tiny like Lil Hop (in Fitzroy) but small enough that tables do get filled up pretty quick. It's a casual, minimal effort that you'd get from your standard taco shop. And I love that. They aren't trying to hard to impress you in décor. They've got a cool collection of tequila, the bottles are really fun to have a look at. And a table topped up with all of the hot sauce you can handle. To their food. My oh my, I'm impressed. The fish taco has fat chunks of fish steak marinated and grilled. It complimemnts the slaw and coriander sauce. Yum. The chicken comes with beans- choose the refired ones. Everything melts together is synchronicity. Come on Taco Tuesdays. Pints are $3, and select tacos are individually $3. It's a dinner night that anyone can afford!

For nights when I don't want to cook myself, this is where I would go to get my Mexi on - and ability for margaritas and beer with salsa and chips.. made my move to Melbourne a little more bearable. The guys had the enchiladas which were great because they were of appropriate size - as in plato style with rice and beans. Dudes were happy. Friend enjoyed her quesadilla plato & I had the fish tacos which were ok. A bit overcooked, could have been chicken, not the light & fluffy kind that you envision. Place is small, don't expect to have a table free and don't expect to have a dinner party with a group. If this was in walking distance I might go there 1 x week. very good value for $$ compared with the rest of Australian Mexican menus...finally!

Okay, it isn't strictly a restaurant since while you can get food here, it tends to only be finger food (though you can get a couple of filling things here). The one problem with the place was that it happened to be pretty crowded when I decided to visit it again for old times sake, and while there is food available, in the end it is more like a tapas bar.

After a few failed attempts to get there (doing drive bys only to realise it was closed) I finally got to try Los Hermanos. Now I'm going to go out on a bit of a limb here, but I dare say it does have some of the best tacos in Melbourne. I ordered the mushroom tacos and fish tacos with chipotle sauce and I think it's become my new favourite taco. The flavours were unique, delicious and the sauce just completed a great dish. The staff are all super friendly and happy to recommend dishes for you. We took their advice and went with the cactus salad. Something I've not seen in Melbourne before. A great side dish to go with the tacos. They have a cute little courtyard outside, but I personally prefer inside to enjoy the atmosphere of this awesome taqueria.

We stumbled upon Pj's Mexican Kitchen by accident as we were starving before heading out to…read moreEastland for a movie. Pj's is located off to the left of Maroondah Highway before you hit Eastlink and there is some parking out the front of the restaurant. With both indoor and outdoor seating available, Pj's was packed Saturday night but we managed to snag a table at the back. The servers seemed a little flustered as there were quite a few larger parties ordering and we were repeatedly asked if we would like to order when we already had but hey I'd rather be asked than left there hungry. A complimentary teeny tiny bowl of corn chips kicked off our night and we ordered a strawberry milkshake and a glass of sangria to quench our thirst during the wait for food. Fish taco- squeeze the lemon onto the crispy fish and we have a winner. Beef taco-best taco out of the 3 as it was juicy and the beef was very tender. Chicken taco- a bit dry but I drenched it with chilli sauce yum! Combination special enchilada -Spinach and potato mixed Ice cream nacho - dusted with cinnamon sugar, the vanilla ice-cream was drizzled with honey and matched with a side of tia maria. This wasn't quite what I expected, it was more bland as I imagined that the "nachos" would be more like cinnamon toast crunch pieces. We did finish the whole thing but it got a bit too sweet towards the end. I'm glad we made an emergency food stop and stopped here as I enjoyed it. I like how you can choose a soft tortilla or hard taco shell and although not exactly like the street tacos in Mexico, this was much better than some of the taco's i've had in Australia that are drenched in sour cream and overdone.
