We finally found really good Mexican food in Melbourne !!! Bay City Burrito has some damn good food. It is well made and has amazing flavour. It actually tastes like Mexican food ! This is what I ate. Let's start with some burritos. The first one I ate ...... "The Bay City Bomber" it's MASSIVE ! and it is. 5 stars ! I ate the whole thing. For such a large burrito I was expecting to get a huge bit of a single ingredient but I didn't. It was perfectly layered and I felt like I got each ingredient in every bite. I put pinto beans on it instead of black beans. "Chicken Burrito Bowl" great alternative to a burrito if you don't want the tortilla. Delicious. Pinto beans instead of black. "Breakfast Burrito" perfect combination of egg, cheese, and beans, pinto of course. "Bean and Cheese Burrito" no rice , really good, tasted like something I would have made at home. It was nice to be able to taste just the pinto beans without all the other flavours. "Pulled Jake Fruit Taco" I had to try this before I could talk shit on it and was actually really good. No shit to talk. It does in fact taste like pulled pork but with more of a squash texture. Probably wouldn't have it in a burrito but it was just right in a taco. "Nuclear Fresh Made Salsa" amazing!!!!! Get it ! "BCB Mandarin Margarita" this was good but this is also why I'm only giving 4 stars. The guy who made it totally lied about how much tequila was in it, I WATCHED YOU MAKE IT ! Also I am the biggest light weight when it comes to tequila, it messes me up and I didn't feel a thing or taste a thing nor did my wife, don't waste you money, it's $35 and you get two small ass drinks out of the pitcher each. I'm not mad just don't lie, and don't try and make me think that Triple Sec is just as good as tequila. Come on ! Definitely go here and eat it all ! Drink water or beer ! Hell yeah that was an amazing pulled jackfruit burrito, with spicy +++ and extra guac DAYAM. The bright orangey yellowy corn tortilla was so SO good. partner got vegetarian nachos and holy moly, I had some bites and it was so good. Everybody check it out if ur in the area. First timer to this place. 1. Cozy inside on a chilly night like tonight. 2. Good menu range of choices to delight any taste buds. 3. It took a little bit for our meals to arrive, but when they did, I took one look and thought: "there's no way I'm gonna be able to finish all that!!" And I was right... They happily repackaged the meal to take away! 5. So taste was good, value perhaps a little lacking. Bay City Burrito is simply tasty, casual Tex-Mex. Their premise is San Francisco 'Mission style' burritos - a whole meal in a foil-wrapped tortilla. This is a concept you'll either love or hate, depending on how picky you like to get over authenticity of food in Australia. There is a large variety of options, including build your own or salad bowls to go carb-free. A wise move being based by the beach in St. Kilda. Their fillings are really tasty. I think the pulled pork is a winner, very flavoursome. I wasn't feeling the burrito vibe and also wasn't starving like my dining companion was (these burritos are huge), so I ordered nachos and said he could pick at them if they were monster sized while he waited for his burrito. I regretted saying that when they came out, as they were in fact human-sized and delicious enough not to want to share them. Maybe a tad OTT on the red onion and tomato, but otherwise really yummy. Their collection of sauces are awesome and had us snapping a photo of the web site for future reference. I was a big fan of the chipotle one and my chilli fiend of a BF decided he should go 'nuclear'. Now I have seen this man eat ridiculous levels of chilli without breaking a sweat, so if he says "wow this has some heat!" then he means it. I have a pretty decent heat tolerance, but I found it too hot for me and it definitely brought tears to my eyes. I'd definitely come back if I was in the area for some cheap eats, and while I was bright eyed and bushy tailed when I dined here, having seen what is on offer I shall be filing this one under hangover cures... read more

Cute little cafe style Mexican place. We had the Nachos Locos, and Quesadilla with chicken and both were very, very good. The house mandarine margarita was excellent as well. There was no issues with timing, we ordered and had our food within 10 minutes and they were moderately busy. As an American this is some excellent quality Mexican food! read more

For those of you that have been blessed with tasting burritos over in the old US of A, then you've got to drop by Bay City Burrito for some excellent Mexican offerings. The owner is a super lovely American who has brought his kids up in Aus, and his expertise shows- This place is as good as Chipotle or a SF burrito place, and while it might not be as cheap as you'd get over there, it's reasonably priced compared to the other similar food options around town. The giant burrito (i forgot the name!) is outstanding, but trust the menu when it says it's huge - I slightly regretted eating this on a Friday arvo when I had to get back to work and couldn't have a nap to let it digest! Delicious burritos, chips, salsa, etc etc. Will definitely keep revisiting this spot, and it'd be a fun place to drop by if you're spending the day at the beach! read more

Being an American from the SF Bay Area, you might be able to imagine my excitement when I saw this place was up and coming practically around the corner from my house AND a right by my work! I was a bit skeptical about whether or not it would actually be anywhere close to what I would have gotten from home, but I was definitely pleasantly surprised. The owner, Garry, is from the SF Bay Area and also owns Hi-Tech Burrito in Hawthorne so he definitely knows what he's aiming for. I don't think I've been to many places where the owner spends so much of his time ensuring that the customers are enjoying their meals as well as greeting and helping to make the food. He also seems to be quite proud of his staff and congratulates them when they have a busy service time for making through it with no issues. Definitely someone you would want on your team. The burritos are HUGE and absolutely delicious. You can get heaps of add ons that include Guacamole, Cream and many other things (yes they are add-ons but totally worth it). They also have an awesome burrito for the little guys that is a much smaller burrito and many other menu items if you aren't too into burritos (salads, tacos, quesadillas, etc.) To be honest though, if you're in the market for something like a quesadilla, I reckon this is not the place for you. I make better ones at home. They lack the amount of cheese that they should have and I definitely much prefer shredded chicken in quesadillas than chunks of chicken. My quesadilla looked like it was just thrown together and put on the grill.... not too impressed. Looks like I'll be sticking to the burritos. The range of drinks both non-alcoholic and alcoholic range from various Mexican Imported stuff, to the normal stuff we can get here in Melbourne and they also have recently started doing margaritas! If you're in the mood for some yummy food, head down here, don't forget to get some chips and salsa though while you're waiting, they're definitely worth it! read more

St Kilda has become a bit of a hot spot for Mexican food lately--Radio Mexico, Acland Street Cantina, and Eat Drink Love Taco are all pretty darn good. Bay City specializes in the San Francisco style burrito, one of the world's most perfect foods. Stick with the Bay City special--spanish rice, black beans, melty cheese, sufficiently spicy salsa and meat in an appropriately huge tortilla imported from the US. In a rare instance of Australian salsa being too hot, the "nuclear" salsa is difficult to actually eat. I would stick with the "hot" salsa and add extra hot sauce (available on the table) as needed. I've tried the veg (bean and cheese), grilled chicken and pork carnitas so far and all the varieties are quite tasty. As far as burritos go, I would have to say that these are my favorites in all of Melbourne. The burritos are also fairly inexpensive at least compared to the average price of tacos in this town. A single burrito is easily more filling than three tacos, and the Bay City Special goes for just shy of $14 instead of the $15-18 you would pay for tacos. They have a very good selection of Mexican beers--although last I checked they didn't have Tecate, my favorite cheap Mexican beer. Also, I am in favor of adding slices of lime to my beer and was a little disappointed that the lime was lacking in my Negra Modelo. Beyond the food and drink, I like how the room is open out to the street, Luna park, and the bay beyond. It's a really pleasant place for Modelo and burrito in the breeze now that more summery weather is upon us. read more

I really like the concept behind this joint - it's really well thought out and it is a welcome addition to Acland Street's eclectic lineup of restaurants. It's a pretty ideal place to have a burrito and a beer, and even though it's not perfect I do appreciate it for what is it: a fresh mexican place in St. Kilda. Bay City Burrito is a beautiful, open space down by Luna Park, with quick service and a fair amount of seating. All of the tables are dotted with a few different varieties of hot sauce, which you'll need, as a few of the dishes are a little bit bland (but still tasty). I feel like the prices are a little bit high for what you're getting, and the menu can be a little bit confusing - for example you can't order any of the preset burritos in a small size... but you can "build your own" small burrito, which ends up costing just as much as a large one. I just feel like there should be big and small options, since it's obvious that they are available, just difficult to obtain. The being said... the regular sized burritos are HUGE. The more I eat at Bay City, the more it actually grows on me. I be it's going to be a hot spot during the summer! read more

Three words - GOD AWFUL SLOW It's been damn near 30 minutes, and we haven't received our chips & guac, let alone our burrito. Yes....ONE burrito. Granted, they are a bit busy, but there is no line & empty tables. The kid that took my order came by & asked rather surprisingly, "You haven't got your chips & guac yet??", and ran off, I assumed to fetch them....still nothing. The food better be damn good... Not gonna lie. Food here is pretty good. Being a resident of California it isn't authentic. Tastes good though. Food can take forever to get to your table here which is weird because typically it's a pretty fast meal to prepare. Took a shade under 15 mins to get 2 tacos and a nachos locos. If you got your food faster it would be a 4 star place. Every Time I come here it's slow. Otherwise, you won't be disappointed by your meal. Enjoy read more

I've lived in Australia for half a year now and didn't think I'd be able to find a truly authentic Mexican restaurant. A friend brought me here and I was proven wrong. This place is fairly priced, has great portion sizes, and best of all, tastes GREAT. The bay city burrito is massive and both the steak and chicken are tender. Ordered 1 burrito via app for pick up. Told it would be 30 mins, ok sure. Arrive 33 minutes later, told it's still "5 minutes away". Well after 10 minutes I thought I'd use all the free time you assume I have to write a review. Here goes: Inept service and slow preparation. This place is awesome. Being from California (the Bay City) and having a lifelong love affair with Mexican food I can say I felt at home and incredibly satisfied here. The selection of California beers and SF Giants decorations also helped with that. Chips and guac were great, and I had the S.F. braised tofu burrito which was by far the most creative and delicious vegetarian burrito I've ever had, though a bit pricey. Terrible service. I would not eat there if this was the last Mexican in town. Staff are very rude and the food didn't fair any better. And I really wanted to like them as I do like burritos and Mexican food in general. There are other Mexican restaurants in St Kilda nearby that I'd recommend: Amigos on Acland St itself and Bluecorn, a short walk away at the end of Acland on Barkley St. This place sucks!
