I love Melbourne's obsession with Mexican. Never again do we have to suffer the giant plates of…read moreslop we were served at Tex-Mex chains as a kid. I have never been to Mexico myself, so I'm no expert on authenticity that some people are real sticklers for. All I know is that Si Senor has a cute little space on the Balaclava side of Carlisle St, serving up some super fresh and delicious Mex fare. Their El Pastor (pork and pineapple) is incredibly good. The pork is so delicious and moorish, we could have eaten it all day. The tacos are two small mouthfuls so there's plenty of opportunity to try them all or fill up on their giant corn cobs first. If I were going back (and I will for sure), I'd go straight for the burritos. I'm not normally a fan of burritos, having been scarred by the aforementioned tex-mex of times past, but these are so fresh and amazing. At $12 they are enough for one, but served cut in half if you want to share alongside some other bits and pieces. There's no liquor license at the moment, but they do allow BYO. This isn't the place I would suggest you come to linger a while though. The service was pleasant, but pretty woeful. We struggled to get anyone's attention to ask for every little thing - plates, napkins, hot sauce, more food - we were largely ignored and had to wait a while to eat food sitting in front of us because we weren't served the basic essentials to actually eat. At the end of the meal, we had to ask for the bill several times, before then being asked what we ordered. Lucky for them we are honest, no one was keeping track of us so we could have told them anything. All in all, I would tip this as an excellent choice for a quick bite to eat or place for casual eats to satisfy a craving for Mexican. I know my partner will be bugging me to go back for those burritos and I won't be putting up any fight. P.S Almost forgot to add - they have an unmarked bottle of hot sauce that will melt your face if you can find it!

This tacos took me right back home, the salsas, the Lemon slices, the plates and even the service. Oh and how can I forget the beer list... Simply highly recommend and worth the travel if you live in the west.

I really liked this place. It is very big and open - and also busy even on a rainy Thursday night…read more It is obviously the place to go with a girlfriend as most tables seemed to be for two girls having big catch ups. I was no exception! So a nice wine list - I had a lovely Pinot Gris and there was a good cocktail list. Food wise we started with their sharing plate which was delicious. The guacamole was outstanding. I am very picky on the guacamole front so this is big coming from me! Then we had the salad without any protein which was also delicious - black beans, quinoa, roasted corn and lots more guacamole. And then the chicken quesadillas which were a bit of a sensation. A lot of quesadillas are light on the filling - these guys were heavy on it and that paid off. Delicious, fast friendly service and a reasonable bill - I highly recommend!

I've long been a fan of the Fonda restaurants and from their humbled cramped-space days in Richmond…read morethey have since gotten big, bright, fun new spots like Glenferrie Rd, Hawthorn. Fonda is easy casual dining, perfect for groups and catch ups when you want something tasty without spending a fortune. No it's not authentic Mexican, but few places in Melbourne are! This is their modern take and all of it's pretty damn good and a million times better than a certain Tex-Mex chain that plagued Melbourne with popularity in the 90s. No sloppy beans and rice dishes here. Just fresh-tasting tacos, burritos, quesadillas and salads. The menu changes up every so often, but my current favs are the pork quesadillas and beef burrito. They salads are really decent for a lunch option too - yummy and filling. The atmosphere is mostly couples and young groups, but we did have a 4 year old in our dining party on last visit and they took good care of her. The staff were really accommodating and also offered a plain chicken-and-cheese quesadilla to avoid any tears over spicy food. I wouldn't suggest coming here with a whole hoard of children, but for the most part it's both adult and family friendly. All orders are taken at the counter, be it take away or dine-in. Getting a seat can be a little tricky in peak times as it's a walk-in restaurant unless you're booking for a large group. But the style of ordering makes it fairly fast turn over. They'd probably make a lot more money on booze if they did table service, but I guess it moves people through faster too. I find the cocktails a bit pricy, but the aqua frescas are larger, delicious, and can have booze added to them if you so desire. All in all a great easy spot to catch up with friends without any fuss. Good for: groups, casual dining, older kids, burrito cravings.

They should be embarrassed to call this Mexican. Heck, they can't even call it "Mexicanesque". It actually started off well, believe it or not. They got our hopes up with some decent margaritas. But even after drinking a jug of margaritas, this just didn't work out well. We ordered chips and salsa. The salsa was as close to ketchup as you can get without calling it ketchup. And it was small bowl for $12.50. Some poor pastor is turning over in his grave in Mexico because the "tacos al pastor" were as far from what we know they should be as possible. Imagine gristly pork done as a poor barbecue. Like really badly. And this was one step below that. I had a dish that came with french fries - and the french fries were the hit of the meal. My date and I actually dueled for them as they were the only enjoyable food on the table. Other highlights: - there was only 1 napkin on the table - even though we made it clear there was a severe avocado allergy one of the plates came with guacamole! Do yourself a favor and choose a different Mexican restaurant. Or you may want to consider fasting for the evening instead of giving these imposters any of your hard-earned money.

The food was fresh and the taste was as good as before. That was great. There were a few slip ups - idk if it's due to staff shortage or kitchen wasn't up to the mark. Nachos - I specifically requested sour cream on the side as we were all going to share it and I don't like it spread all over. We got it with sour cream on top. They were kind enough to replace it for us, just a giant waste of food :( We ordered one main each for 3 of us. 2 arrived together while I sat and whacked their face. My food arrived when others had almost finished eating, awkward! I ordered a drink that looked like was served in a martini glass. It arrived in what looked like a shot glass shaped in a form of a martini glass. The drink was good and well made though. So points for that. Dessert was a chocolate brownie sizzler. It didn't sizzle. Icecream was good. Chocolate sauce was good, brownie was cold and hard.

The menu is pretty much what you'd expect; tacos, burritos, quesadilla and a reasonable selection of tequilas. I ordered the Tequila-Lime tiger prawn fajitas which came with a plate of rocket, guacamole, Mexican rice and four flour tortillas. They were advertising litres of frozen watermelon margarita for $20 on the chalk board outside and as it was stinking hot that sounded like a good idea too :) The prawns arrived on a sizzling hot plate with slices of capsicum and onion - a very generous serve which was enough to fill me up without the need for an entree. There were the obligatory hot sauces on the table - four different varieties in fact - so I tried a different one on each tortilla. All good, but the Jalapeño was my favourite. Jaliscos is good and the service is fast and friendly. The total bill was $55 which included a shot of very tasty Patron Silver, so not bad value for the money.

We got a jug of frozen Margherita which was tasteless frozen cordial that had little IF any tequila in it, you'd get more drunk sucking the alcohol out of a deodorant stick!! The food was a very poor representation of Mexican, they used very cheap ingredients and it was sadly obvious that this place is either run by a tight ass or has never actually eaten Mexican food before.. The corn was ok, he nachos tasted like stale Doritos with home brand cheese that had been microwaved and the tacos were flavourless on stale flakey.. Over all we were very disappointed and at a cost of $90.00 for 2 where grossly ripped off!!
